How to Make FFmpeg Reconnect to YouTube Live After an Internet Drop

For FFmpeg pushing RTMP to YouTube Live, use the documented FIFO output recovery pattern—not HTTP reconnect flags. Learn what it can and cannot guarantee.

For FFmpeg pushing an RTMP stream to YouTube Live, the documented recovery approach is to send output through FFmpeg’s fifo muxer and enable its recovery options. The HTTP -reconnect flags are for HTTP connections; they are not a general fix for a broken RTMP output. FIFO recovery is an attempt to resume output, not a promise of gap-free video or that YouTube will keep the same live event running.

First identify which connection dropped

FFmpeg has an input side and an output side. If FFmpeg is reading a source over HTTP and that HTTP connection fails, HTTP protocol options may be relevant. If FFmpeg is sending its output to YouTube’s RTMP ingest and that connection fails, the documented example uses FIFO output recovery instead.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • HTTP input: The failure is between FFmpeg and an HTTP source. Consult the HTTP options for the installed FFmpeg build.
  • RTMP output: The failure is between FFmpeg and the configured ingest destination. The relevant documented pattern is an output FIFO with recovery enabled.

These approaches address different connections. Adding HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP output command does not make those flags an RTMP-output recovery switch.

Use FIFO recovery for an RTMP output

FFmpeg’s documentation provides this generic RTMP recovery example:

  • At home or on the go, high-performance antennas provide best-in-class Wi-Fi Hotspot performance and coverage indoors and outdoors for all your devices.
  • Concurrent 2.4GHz and 5GHz operating modes for fast, reliable, broadband speed Wi-Fi connections. Enjoy simultaneous use of your laptop, tablet, gaming console, and other internet devices on your terms.
ffmpeg -re -i ...
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name

The ellipses stand for omitted input and stream arguments; this is not a complete copy-and-run command. Replace the example RTMP URL with the ingest destination configured for your YouTube live event, and retain the input, mappings, codecs and other settings your workflow requires. The example enables FIFO output, uses FLV as the FIFO format, enables recovery, sets a one-second recovery wait, and enables dropping packets if the FIFO overflows.

According to the FFmpeg documentation, this FIFO arrangement can continue processing during a temporary output failure and attempt recovery every second indefinitely. That describes FFmpeg’s generic RTMP recovery behavior. It does not guarantee that the connection will recover successfully, that viewers will see uninterrupted playback, or that YouTube will preserve the same live event or session.

Check your build before adapting the command

  1. Record your FFmpeg version and build, operating system, input type and complete existing command.
  2. Check that your installed build provides the FIFO muxer and the options used here before adding them. Available behavior and syntax should be confirmed against that build.
  3. Adapt the example around your actual input, stream mapping, encoding choices and YouTube ingest destination. Do not replace the omitted arguments with guesses.
  4. After a drop, inspect FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s live control room to determine whether FFmpeg reconnected and whether the live event is still receiving the stream.

The cited example is generic FFmpeg documentation, not a YouTube-verified command or guarantee. Without your build details and current command, a more specific copy-paste command cannot be confirmed.

When HTTP reconnect options apply

FFmpeg documents these options for the HTTP protocol, so they are relevant when the failing connection is an HTTP input using that protocol—not as a general remedy for RTMP output to YouTube:

  • reconnect: reconnect after a disconnect before EOF.
  • reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error and reconnect; documented as useful for live or endless streams.
  • reconnect_on_network_error: reconnect on TCP or TLS errors during connection setup.
  • reconnect_on_http_error: retry selected HTTP response codes.
  • reconnect_streamed: permit reconnects on errors for streamed or non-seekable inputs.

Consult the FFmpeg protocols documentation for option details. The HTTP implementation source lists defaults of a 120-second maximum reconnect delay and a 256-second maximum total reconnect delay, but those are HTTP implementation defaults in the rolling FFmpeg master source. Verify them against your installed release; do not apply them to FIFO or RTMP output recovery.

What -re does—and does not do

-re reads input at its native frame rate, equivalent to a read rate of 1. It can be relevant when pacing a file as a simulated live stream, but it does not reconnect a failed network output. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation warns against using it with an actual capture device or live input because it may cause packet loss.

Troubleshoot a failed recovery attempt

  • The connection drops but FFmpeg does not recover: Confirm the failed side is the RTMP output, not an HTTP input. Check that the command actually routes output through -f fifo -fifo_format flv and includes the intended recovery options; then verify those options exist in your build.
  • The command rejects a FIFO option: The installed build may not support the syntax or option. Check its version/build and available muxer options before changing the command.
  • The stream resumes with missing content: The example enables -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. Packets may be dropped if the FIFO overflows. The documentation does not establish an optimal queue configuration or promise continuous playback during an outage.
  • YouTube does not appear to resume the same live event: FFmpeg’s generic RTMP example does not establish how YouTube handles a reconnect or preserves an event/session. Check the live event in YouTube’s control room; do not infer event continuity solely from FFmpeg’s recovery attempt.
  • You added -reconnect but the RTMP push still fails: Those are HTTP protocol options. Use the output-recovery approach for RTMP rather than treating HTTP flags as a general RTMP reconnect control.
  • Packet loss occurs with a camera or other live capture source: Check whether -re is being applied to a live input. FFmpeg warns against that use; -re is not needed as an output reconnect mechanism.

Or let it run in the cloud

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FFmpeg’s FIFO example guarantee the same YouTube live event continues after reconnecting?

No. The example documents generic RTMP output recovery; it does not promise YouTube event or session continuity.

Which details are needed to tailor a command to my setup?

Your FFmpeg version and build, operating system, input type, and complete existing output command.
