Multistreaming—also called simulcasting—sends the same live program to more than one platform at the same time. Beginners have two main options: send a separate stream from their computer to each platform, or send one stream to a cloud relay that distributes it. The right choice depends on your upload capacity, computer workload, platform rules, and whether you need a different version for each destination.
Choose how your stream will reach each platform
The first decision is where the streams split. With local direct outputs, your computer sends a separate feed to each destination. With a cloud relay, your computer sends one feed to a service, which forwards it to the destinations you connect.

| Consideration | Local direct outputs | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| Home upload | Each destination’s bitrate adds to the total demand on your connection. | Your connection sends one incoming feed to the relay; the relay handles onward distribution. |
| Computer workload | More outputs can require more encoding and system resources. | Avoids encoding and uploading a separate feed for each destination from your computer. |
| Setup | Configure output to each destination; exact steps depend on your encoder or software. | Connect destinations to the relay, then send your encoder output to the service. |
| Dependencies | Depends on the encoder or software supporting the outputs and your direct connections to each platform. | Depends on the relay’s supported destinations, current limits, and terms. |
| Often suits | Creators with sufficient upload and computing capacity who want direct outputs. | Creators who want one outbound feed or have limited local upload capacity. |
Neither route is best for everyone. A relay makes distribution simpler from your end, but adds a service dependency. Direct outputs give you direct connections, but require enough upload bandwidth and computer capacity for the workload.

Add the target bitrates of the feeds your computer will send. YouTube’s cross-platform guide illustrates the arithmetic with one stream at 6 Mbps and another at 4 Mbps, for 10 Mbps of combined target upload; those figures are an example, not a universal bitrate recommendation. Your actual sustained upload capacity needs practical headroom above the combined target. Test on the same connection and with the settings you intend to use.

A relay reduces the number of outbound feeds from your home connection to one incoming stream, but it does not eliminate the need for a stable upload to that service.
Check platform eligibility and rules first
YouTube setup and eligibility
YouTube says a channel needs to be verified and have live streaming enabled. Its current eligibility help also says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days and streamers must be at least 16. Initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned broadcast. YouTube also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; confirm the current rules in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help before relying on them.

Twitch simulcasting
Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ says its guidelines apply unless you have an agreement with Twitch requiring exclusivity. It requires the Twitch viewing experience not to be degraded compared with other services and says not to use Twitch to direct viewers to another live stream. Twitch specifically states that “shrinking the size of, or otherwise degrading, the video quality on Twitch so that it’s worse than on other platforms would make the user’s experience on Twitch less than other services and, therefore, not meet these guidelines.” Review the current FAQ and any agreements that apply to your account before going live.
Other destinations
Make sure every destination account is active and in good standing. Depending on the destination and setup, you may need its RTMP server URL and stream key. If you use a relay, check that it currently supports all your intended platforms and review its present service limits and terms.

How to multistream with OBS or another encoder
The exact output controls vary by encoder and relay, but the preparation and testing sequence is broadly similar. OBS’s official Quick Start Guide recommends using its Auto-Configuration Wizard and checking sources, audio, output settings, and a test stream.
- Choose platforms and confirm readiness. Check account status and any exclusivity terms. For YouTube, verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm the current rules for each destination.
- Select direct outputs or a relay. Choose direct outputs only if your computer and connection can handle the combined encoding and upload workload. For a relay workflow, verify the destinations it supports and connect those accounts in its dashboard. Restream’s OBS multistream guide describes connecting OBS to Restream, adding destinations, and sending OBS’s output to the service.
- Set up the event and connection details. For YouTube, create a live stream or event and use the stream URL and key where the chosen workflow requires them. For other destinations, retrieve the corresponding connection details if needed. Treat every stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture, overlay, or public post, and regenerate it if exposed.
- Configure the encoder. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to get settings based on your hardware and network, then review the output settings for the workload you intend to stream. If sending direct outputs, make sure the bitrate total fits your stable upload capacity. If using a relay, configure OBS to send its feed to that service. OBS notes that meeting its system requirements alone does not guarantee that a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene will run successfully; see its system requirements.
- Build and check a scene. Add the game, window, screen, or camera source needed for the show. Confirm the intended microphone is selected and that its audio meter moves. A webcam, phone, or console may suffice for a basic setup; encoder workflows can also use external audio or video equipment. A microphone, webcam, or capture card is optional—not a requirement for multistreaming. YouTube’s encoder guide discusses common gaming and casual-streaming equipment.
- Run a private or short test. Check the preview, voice and program audio levels, audio sync, dropped frames, and the status shown at every destination. If you are using a relay, check both the encoder-to-relay connection and each forwarded destination. Do not announce a public broadcast until the test looks right.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep a way to check each destination’s stream health and read its chat. Make sure the Twitch experience is not worse than on other platforms, and follow each destination’s current rules throughout the broadcast.
Internet, equipment, and practical trade-offs
Plan for the connection you actually have
For direct outputs, use the combined target bitrate as a starting point for estimating upload demand, not as proof your connection can sustain it. Network conditions fluctuate, so leave headroom and test at the intended settings. If the connection cannot reliably carry the combined outputs, lower the targets if that suits your production or use a relay to send one feed instead.
Rank #4
Keep the setup as simple as your show allows
A basic broadcast may need only a phone, webcam, or console. Encoder software is useful when you want scenes, overlays, gameplay capture, or external audio and video equipment. YouTube lists an external microphone, webcam, and headphones as common choices for gaming and casual streaming, but these are not mandatory purchases. If you want to improve voice quality, a USB microphone is one optional category to consider; no particular model is established here as necessary or recommended.
Common multistream problems and fixes
- One destination never starts: Confirm that live streaming is enabled on the account, that the event is ready, and that the destination’s server URL and stream key are correct. Check for account restrictions and verify that your relay supports that destination.
- All direct streams buffer or drop frames: The combined bitrate may be too high for stable upload, or the connection may be fluctuating. Compare the total target bitrate with actual sustained upload capacity, leave headroom, and test again. A relay can reduce the number of outgoing feeds from your home connection to one.
- The computer struggles as destinations are added: Multiple direct outputs can increase encoding and system load. Reduce the workload or choose a relay that distributes one encoder feed, then test the actual resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- The stream appears on some platforms but not others: Check each platform’s status separately, including account eligibility, event settings, and connection details. For a relay, inspect its per-destination status as well as the incoming encoder feed.
- Viewers hear the wrong microphone or no voice: Select the intended input device in the encoder and watch its audio meter while speaking. Check the destination preview during the test rather than assuming the correct source was selected.
- A stream key may have been exposed: Replace or reset the key in the platform’s live-stream settings and update the encoder or relay with the new value before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a live camera or interactive show, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera or multistream to other platforms.
