For the most reliable workflow, export your finished edit as a video file, then upload it in YouTube Studio. Some editors also offer direct YouTube publishing, but that option and the settings available vary by editor. In Studio, complete the video details, audience declaration, checks and visibility choice before saving.

Adobe documents both file export and direct YouTube publishing in Premiere, but not every editor supports direct publishing. The file-upload workflow below applies broadly. Adobe’s Premiere export guide and Premiere’s social publishing guide describe those editor-specific options.

Prepare and export the video
Review the edit before rendering
Watch the full sequence, not just the opening. Check framing throughout, listen for clipped or missing audio, and inspect the final frame so the video does not end unexpectedly. In Premiere, Adobe’s workflow is to select the sequence in the Timeline, choose File > Export > Media, select a destination and scrub the preview to check how the picture fits the frame. These menu steps are Premiere-specific.

For a conventional YouTube upload, Adobe recommends H.264 in an MP4 container for most online video. In Premiere, Match Source – Adaptive High Bitrate is a quick, high-quality starting preset; inspect the settings rather than assuming it is ideal for every project. Keep the export’s aspect ratio and frame rate aligned with the source and intended output, use progressive field order, and export stereo audio as AAC at 48 kHz. Avoid enlarging a lower-resolution source simply to label it as higher resolution.

Adobe’s Premiere YouTube guide gives illustrative target bitrates of 8 Mbps and 45 Mbps for 4K. Those are recommendations in that guide, not universal YouTube requirements; the suitable bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, complexity and the export workflow. YouTube accepts vertical, square and horizontal video and fits each to the viewing screen. Preserve the intended frame rather than adding black side bars to vertical footage. YouTube’s upload guidance covers supported orientations.

Export a local copy
In your editor, choose the export or render command, select the destination and filename, confirm the format and settings, then start the export. Wait for it to finish and, if practical, play the rendered file from beginning to end. This catches export-only problems—such as a missing ending, incorrect crop or audio issue—before upload. Keep the file if you want a local master; direct publishing may not leave you with the same conveniently accessible exported copy.
Upload the file in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Upload videos.
- Choose the exported video file. YouTube’s current computer help page lists up to 15 videos for simultaneous upload.
- Open the video’s edit/details screen and fill in the information before setting its visibility. Uploading transfers the file; publishing is the step that makes it available to viewers.
YouTube processes the upload to the highest resolution available. HD and 4K processing can take longer depending on the video’s quality, length, format and current traffic. Allow processing time before a planned release, and check the available playback quality before promoting a high-resolution version. YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos.

Complete the video details and audience setting
Title, description and thumbnail
Write a clear title that accurately describes the video and a useful description with context viewers need. YouTube’s current help page sets a 100-character title limit and a 5,000-character description limit. Add a thumbnail and, if it helps viewers navigate your channel, select a playlist. Do not rely on tags to drive discovery: YouTube says tags usually play a minimal role, apart from helping with common misspellings.
Audience and other settings
Answer whether the video is made for kids. This audience declaration is required; it is separate from whether children might happen to watch. Set the answer accurately for the content. Depending on the video, review options for age restriction, language and caption certification, category, subtitles, comments, license and distribution. Add captions where useful, and use cards or end screens when eligible. YouTube’s current page says a video must be at least 25 seconds long to add an end screen.

Review checks before choosing visibility
YouTube’s Checks screen includes a copyright check that searches for copyrighted material. It can continue in the background after publication, and a result is not final legal clearance or a guarantee against a later claim or restriction. During Checks, YouTube also runs likeness detection; that detection does not itself restrict visibility, though a later policy violation may lead to removal. Review any result and make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the material you use. A passed check is not permission to use someone else’s work.

Select the intended setting, review the changes and save. You can set a public video as an instant Premiere where that option is available. If you leave the upload flow before selecting visibility, YouTube warns that the video remains private. The upload date and the public publication date can differ when a video is uploaded as private or unlisted and made public later.

If you are publishing directly from an editor
Use the editor’s YouTube destination only if your current version supports it. Follow its account authorization prompts, choose the export settings and destination, then verify the result in YouTube Studio. Do not assume the editor can set every title, audience, check, caption or visibility option. Confirm the saved details and publication state in Studio before sharing the link. If the integration is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly, export a local file and use the Studio upload steps above.
Troubleshoot common publishing problems
- The editor has no YouTube destination: Direct publishing is editor-dependent. Export a local file and upload it in Studio instead.
- The video looks soft or has black bars: Check that the export frame size and aspect ratio match the intended source framing. YouTube accommodates vertical and square video; do not add black side bars to force a horizontal canvas.
- The audio or ending is wrong after upload: Play the rendered file before uploading and compare it with the edit. Re-export with the intended audio and sequence settings if the fault is already in the file.
- HD or 4K is not available immediately: Higher-resolution processing can take longer. Wait for processing to complete before judging the final quality.
- The video is not visible to the audience: Check whether it is Private, Unlisted or scheduled. Scheduled videos stay private until their selected release time.
- A copyright check has a result: Read the details and resolve rights or policy issues as appropriate. A completed check is not a final legal clearance.
