That rule—not a fixed weekly calendar—is the most useful starting point. The right height and timing vary with grass species, shade, weather, and how quickly the lawn is growing.
Choose a cutting height for your grass and site
There is no single correct mower setting for every lawn. These example ranges from Illinois Extension vary by species; they are guidance, not guarantees for every cultivar, climate, use, or management style.

| Grass species | Example mowing height |
|---|---|
| Bermudagrass | 1–2 inches |
| Buffalograss | 1½–3 inches |
| Zoysiagrass | 1–3 inches |
| Kentucky bluegrass | 2–3 inches |
| Perennial ryegrass | 2–3 inches |
| Creeping red fescue | 1½–2 inches |
| Tall fescue | 2½–3½ inches |
Local recommendations can differ. Purdue Extension recommends at least 3 inches for cool-season lawn grasses in Indiana and Illinois; that regional guidance should not be applied automatically to other climates or grass types. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises matching height to both species and site. In shade, keep turf toward the high end of its recommended range to preserve leaf area.
If you are unsure what grass you have, identify it before adopting a precise height. Check your local extension service’s guidance for your species and region; the ranges above are useful examples, not a substitute for local advice.

Use the one-third rule to decide when to mow
Remove no more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. This gives you a trigger based on growth rather than a universal weekly schedule. For a lawn maintained at 3 inches, Iowa State Extension illustrates mowing when the grass reaches about 4½ inches: removing one-third of that blade returns it to roughly 3 inches. The example is explained in Iowa State’s mowing guidance.
Shorter maintained heights mean you need to mow sooner to stay within the rule. Growth changes with grass type, season, weather, irrigation, and fertility, so inspect the lawn rather than relying on the same interval all year. Iowa State’s frequency table assumes daily growth of 0.2 inches; that is an assumption for its example, not a universal measurement of lawn growth.

Set up the mower and make a clean cut
- Confirm the height setting. If mower markings are unclear, check the actual cutting height on a flat surface. Follow the owner’s manual. For any height inspection or adjustment that involves the blade, switch the mower off and disconnect the spark plug first, as Idaho Extension advises.
- Use a sharp blade. A sharp blade helps cut grass cleanly. University of Maryland Extension suggests sharpening at the start of the mowing season or replacing the blade; about 10 cumulative hours of use is offered as a rule of thumb, not a fixed requirement for every mower or condition.
- Wait for suitable conditions. Do not mow wet turf, or grass whose growth has paused because of drought or hot weather. Wet grass is difficult to cut cleanly, and mowing stressed turf adds avoidable strain. Maryland Extension and Illinois Extension advise against mowing wet grass.
Choose a pattern that suits the lawn
Alternating direction or pattern between mowings can help where the same routes create repeated traffic or the lawn develops visible grain. Arkansas Extension says varying the pattern can reduce wear, compaction, scalping, and grain; its lawn-mowing guidance treats the change as a practical benefit. A Massachusetts Extension best-management-practices result likewise describes alternating at right angles to limit horizontal growth orientation.

Changing direction is not essential for every home lawn. Illinois Extension notes that repeating a direction may not be a problem on taller turf typical of residential lawns. Use pattern changes as a tool when traffic, grain, or uneven cutting is an issue, not as a rigid rule.

If the lawn is overgrown, lower the height gradually
Do not cut a badly overgrown lawn straight down to its normal height in one pass. Raise the mower for the first cut so you remove no more than about one-third of the blade, then lower the setting over later mowings until you return to the target range. This avoids scalping the lawn.
Virginia Cooperative Extension describes lowering the height every 2–3 days while returning to the ideal range. Treat that as context-specific practical guidance, not a universal interval; let the one-third rule and the lawn’s recovery guide the next cut. Arkansas Extension also advises raising the cutting height when behind and reducing it gradually over subsequent weeks.

Leave clippings when they disperse through the lawn
On most lawns, clippings can stay in place if they fall back through the grass rather than forming heavy clumps. Florida IFAS explains that returning clippings recycles nutrients and organic matter. Illinois Extension says collection is unnecessary when you mow as needed and follow the one-third rule.
If clippings are clumping, the lawn may have grown too tall or be wet. Correct the timing and conditions for the next cut rather than treating routine bagging as necessary.
