You can use a phone as a laptop webcam with built-in tools when the devices are compatible: Apple Continuity Camera connects an iPhone to a Mac, while Windows 11’s connected-camera feature supports a linked Android phone. Check the requirements below, enable the feature, then choose your phone in the video app’s camera settings.
Which phones and laptops work together?
The built-in method depends on both devices’ operating systems. Apple documents an iPhone-to-Mac route, and Microsoft documents an Android-to-Windows route.

These documented built-in routes do not mean every phone works with every laptop. Microsoft’s Phone Link guide covers iPhone messages, calls, and notifications, but does not establish iPhone-as-webcam support through Phone Link. Microsoft’s Phone Link overview describes those functions.

Check Continuity Camera settings
Continuity Camera can use the iPhone as a Mac webcam or microphone. The iPhone and Mac must be signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, close to each other, and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. The feature is on by default on a compatible iPhone; to check it, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff) and make sure Continuity Camera is enabled. Set up the phone for a better view
A phone can be technically connected but still produce an awkward frame if it is lying flat or pointed from below. For an iPhone used with Continuity Camera, Apple calls for a stable mount or stand, landscape orientation, and the rear camera facing the user. Apple’s setup guide. For other combinations, check that the mount fits your phone and can hold it securely in the intended position. If choosing a magnetic mount, verify that it works with the phone and case; compatibility can vary by model and case. A 2025 Macworld buying guide notes that some older Continuity Camera-capable iPhones may need a MagSafe-compatible case for magnetic mounts.

For iPhone and Mac
- Confirm both devices meet Apple’s requirements, are near one another, use the same Apple Account, and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
- Update macOS, iOS, and the video app, then check that Continuity Camera is enabled in the iPhone’s settings.
- If the iPhone has restarted, unlock it once before trying again.
- Check that the phone is mounted in landscape orientation. If wireless use fails, connect it to the Mac by USB or restart both devices.
During wireless Continuity Camera use, the iPhone may disconnect from Wi-Fi to optimize the feature and may use cellular data for background tasks. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.
