How to Move Your Passwords from a Cloud Manager to KeePassXC

Move passwords from a cloud manager to KeePassXC with a dedicated importer or CSV, verify important entries, and remove unencrypted export files safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Export your passwords from the cloud manager, import that file into KeePassXC, verify the entries, then securely delete any unencrypted export. Use a dedicated importer if KeePassXC supports your manager’s format; otherwise, use the CSV import wizard and check its preview. Export menus and file formats vary by provider, so confirm the source manager’s current export steps before you begin.

Before you export: choose a safe migration path

First identify the source manager and check its current instructions for exporting data. The exact menu names, available file formats, and export scope are provider-specific; there is no single export sequence that applies to every cloud password manager. Look for the provider’s current directions and confirm what kind of file it will create before you start. KeePassXC’s documented import options include CSV, 1Password Export (.1pux), 1Password Vault (.opvault), Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, and KeePass 1 databases (.kdb). The formats available can depend on your installed KeePassXC version. If your source manager is not listed, see whether it offers CSV export, but do not assume that every field or item type will transfer through CSV.

Choose a private location on your computer for the export before generating it. KeePassXC warns that CSV files and some other application export files are unencrypted. That means the contents may be readable by someone who can access the file, so keep it out of shared folders and email, and avoid leaving it somewhere that is automatically synced or backed up in plaintext. Use a local location you control, and treat the export as sensitive for the entire time it exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download KeePassXC from its official download page. Create a new database for the import, or decide which existing database will receive the entries. A new database makes it easier to separate and review the migration; an existing database may be appropriate if it is already where you keep your KeePassXC entries. In either case, know which database you are importing into before you begin. KeePassXC saves databases in the encrypted .kdbx format.

Protect the database password

Choose a long, randomized database password. KeePassXC warns that losing this password may permanently lock you out of the database. Store it somewhere you can recover securely; do not rely on memory alone if that creates a realistic risk of losing access. Keep a recoverable backup of the database file in a separate safe location. The database password and the database file have different roles: the password protects access to the encrypted file, while a backup helps you recover if the file is lost or damaged. A backup is useful only if you can also recover the password needed to open it.

There is no migration success rate or universal password length specified in the documentation used here, so do not treat a particular number as a requirement. The important documented guidance is to use a long, randomized password and preserve a secure way to recover it. Before importing, make sure the destination database is unlocked and that you know where its .kdbx file will be saved.

Import the export into KeePassXC

  1. Open the import command. From the KeePassXC welcome screen, choose Import File, or open an unlocked database and select Database > Import. Confirm that the intended destination database is selected before proceeding.
  2. Select the source’s export format. Choose its dedicated format if KeePassXC lists it. Documented examples are 1Password Export (.1pux), 1Password Vault (.opvault), Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, and KeePass 1 (.kdb), as well as CSV. If the provider supplied a CSV file and no suitable dedicated importer is available, select the CSV import option. Use the format appropriate to both your source export and installed KeePassXC version.
  3. Review the CSV preview. Check that usernames, passwords, URLs, and other visible fields appear in the expected columns. CSV headings and column arrangements can vary. If headings do not line up, use the wizard’s column mapping controls to remap them before finishing. The preview is a chance to catch a mismatch before the import; do not assume that a file has been interpreted correctly just because the wizard accepted it.
  4. Complete the import. Import into the new database you created or into the intended unlocked database. Do not discard the export yet; first check the imported records.

A dedicated importer is the straightforward route when KeePassXC supports the source’s format: it avoids treating that file as a generic set of CSV columns. CSV is a useful fallback when the source manager offers it and there is no suitable dedicated importer. Either route still requires you to check the result. The import format alone does not prove that all fields came across as expected, and the CSV preview specifically helps with column mapping rather than performing a full audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CSV is not a guarantee that all data will migrate. Attachments, advanced attributes, and source-specific item types may be omitted or represented differently. The KeePassXC documentation describes CSV export limitations for attachments and advanced attributes; the exact coverage of another manager’s export depends on that provider and file. Passkeys and other specialized credentials should not be assumed to have transferred unless they appear in the export and in KeePassXC after import. If a particular item type matters to you, check the provider’s export documentation and verify the item in the destination instead of inferring support from a successful import.

Choosing between a dedicated importer and CSV

Question Dedicated importer CSV import
When is it a fit? When the source’s export format is among those supported by your installed KeePassXC version. When the source offers CSV and no suitable dedicated importer is available.
What should you inspect? Important entries and any source-specific fields or item types you rely on. The preview, column mapping, entry counts, and important fields after import.
What is known about exposure? Exposure depends on the export format; KeePassXC warns some application export files may be unencrypted. CSV is unencrypted. Securely delete it after verifying the import.
Does it guarantee every item transfers? No guarantee is established here for all custom fields, attachments, passkeys, or specialized credentials. No. Coverage depends on the source export, and the CSV route may not preserve attachments or advanced attributes.

If the source is outside the documented formats, ask two separate questions: can the manager produce a format KeePassXC can import, and does that format include the data you care about? A CSV answer to the first question does not automatically answer the second. Keep a list of any important item types or details that you need to check rather than relying only on the count of imported records.

Verify the imported passwords before removing the export

KeePassXC’s import preview helps with column mapping, but it is not a complete migration audit. Compare the number of source entries with the number in the destination, then inspect a useful sample of important records. The comparison is your check, not an automated guarantee that every record, field, or attachment has been validated. If the counts differ, or you find a missing field, return to the source export and investigate before deleting it.

Check fields you rely on, including usernames, passwords, website addresses, notes, and any custom details. Look at records that are especially important to access, and include examples that use different types of information if your source manager stores more than basic logins. Test access to several important accounts using KeePassXC before treating the migration as complete. This catches problems that an entry count cannot show, such as a password in the wrong field or a URL that does not lead to the intended login page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that high-priority accounts are present and their login details are intact.
  • Check that URLs point to the intended login pages, not unrelated or blank fields.
  • Look for duplicated records or entries that landed in unexpected fields.
  • For entries with attachments or unusual fields, compare against the source manager directly.
  • Check notes and custom details that you know you need, rather than assuming every field was included.
  • Try opening the KeePassXC database and using the credentials for several important accounts before you declare the move finished.

Keep the original source manager available until you have confirmed access to important accounts. KeePassXC’s guide does not prescribe when to close a source account; that decision depends on your own verification and any separate account or subscription requirements. There is no need to treat export, import, and account closure as one irreversible step. Complete and verify the local copy first, and decide separately whether you still need the source account.

Securely delete the plaintext export

After checking the destination, securely delete the unencrypted export and any other temporary plaintext copies you created. KeePassXC’s User Guide states: “A CSV file is unencrypted and you should securely delete this file after successfully importing it into KeePassXC.” Its warning also applies to several application export files. Do not leave the file in Downloads, the Recycle Bin or Trash, a shared folder, or an email attachment. The goal is not simply to move the file out of sight, but to avoid retaining an easily readable file containing the credentials you just moved.

Deletion behavior varies by operating system and storage device, so use the secure-deletion guidance appropriate to your platform rather than assuming that an ordinary delete has the same effect everywhere. Also consider whether the export was automatically copied to a cloud sync folder or backup location; remove unwanted copies there as well. If you created more than one export while troubleshooting, review and remove each temporary copy after the destination is verified.

Do not delete the KeePassXC database when cleaning up the export. The imported entries belong in the encrypted .kdbx database, which is the file you should preserve and back up. The cleanup target is the unencrypted export and any plaintext duplicates, not the encrypted destination database. Before removing temporary files, make sure the database itself opens and contains the entries you intended to move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use KeePassXC across devices, if you want to

KeePassXC does not run its own cloud synchronization service. Its FAQ describes placing the encrypted .kdbx database in a shared folder and relying on a separate storage provider to synchronize it. This is an optional storage arrangement, not a required step in moving passwords into KeePassXC. A single local database is enough if you only need KeePassXC on one device.

With shared-folder syncing, the provider stores the encrypted database file, while you remain responsible for the master password, backups, and avoiding conflicting edits. KeePassXC’s documentation says the database remains encrypted while stored locally or in cloud storage when protected by a strong, long password. The tradeoff is practical: cloud storage can make the file available on more than one device, but KeePassXC is not hosting or managing that sync for you. You have to maintain access to the password and take care of recoverable backups yourself.

If you do use a shared folder, keep a separate recoverable backup and be cautious about editing the same database on multiple devices before synchronization has completed. Sync conflicts can create divergent copies, so confirm which file is current before making further changes. Do not assume that placing the file in a shared folder eliminates the need for a backup or resolves conflicting edits automatically. The shared-folder approach does not specify a particular provider, plan, price, or conflict-resolution feature; choose a service based on your own needs and its current terms.

Restore browser autofill

For browser autofill, KeePassXC works with the KeePassXC-Browser extension for supported browsers. This is separate from importing passwords: the database can contain your entries without browser integration, and autofill requires the desktop application and extension to connect. Check current browser and operating-system support for your setup, because packaging restrictions can affect whether the desktop app and extension can communicate.

Migration routes at a glance

Route When to use it What to check Export exposure
KeePassXC dedicated importer The source format is listed in the installed KeePassXC version; documented examples include 1Password exports and vaults, Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, and KeePass 1 databases. Inspect important entries and any source-specific fields after import. Depends on the export format; some application export files may be unencrypted.
CSV wizard The source manager offers CSV and no suitable dedicated importer is available. Review the preview, remap columns if needed, and compare entry counts and important fields. CSV is unencrypted; securely delete it after successful verification.

For a source outside the documented formats, consult its own current export instructions and inspect the resulting records carefully. KeePassXC’s documentation does not establish that every manager’s custom fields, attachments, passkeys, or specialized item types will survive a CSV migration. The most reliable decision process is to identify the source’s available export, choose a matching KeePassXC import route if one exists, inspect the preview when using CSV, and verify the resulting data before removing the export.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move passwords from any cloud password manager directly into KeePassXC?

Not necessarily through a dedicated importer. KeePassXC documents import options for CSV, 1Password Export (.1pux), 1Password Vault (.opvault), Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, and KeePass 1 (.kdb). Check your installed version and your provider’s current export instructions. If the manager is not listed, see whether it offers CSV, then verify the imported fields carefully.

Should I use CSV or a dedicated importer?

Use a dedicated importer when KeePassXC supports the source’s export format. Use CSV as a fallback when the provider offers it and no suitable dedicated importer is available. CSV has a preview and column-mapping controls, but it is unencrypted and does not guarantee that every item type or field will transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will attachments, passkeys, and custom fields transfer?

Do not assume they will. Coverage depends on the source manager and export format. KeePassXC’s documentation notes CSV limitations for attachments and advanced attributes; check important attachments, custom details, passkeys, and specialized credentials in both the source and destination.

Is a CSV export safe to keep after importing?

KeePassXC says CSV files are unencrypted and should be securely deleted after a successful import. Verify the destination first, then securely remove the export and any plaintext copies. Also check for copies in shared folders, email, or backup locations.

Does KeePassXC sync my database to the cloud?

No. KeePassXC does not provide its own cloud synchronization service. Its FAQ describes storing the encrypted .kdbx database in a shared folder and relying on a separate synchronization provider. If you choose that option, you remain responsible for the master password, backups, and avoiding conflicting edits.

Can I restore browser autofill after the move?

Yes, using KeePassXC-Browser with a supported browser. Enable browser integration in KeePassXC, install the extension, unlock the database, and authorize the extension’s connection to the desktop app. Check current browser and operating-system support for your setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I close my old password-manager account as soon as I export?

The KeePassXC guide does not specify when to close a source account. Keep it available until you have verified important entries and tested access to important accounts from KeePassXC. Account closure or subscription timing is a separate decision.

The Bottom Line

Identify your source manager’s current export format, choose a matching KeePassXC importer or the CSV wizard, and verify entry counts and important fields before deleting anything. Protect the encrypted .kdbx database with a long, randomized password and keep a recoverable backup. Securely delete unencrypted exports after verification; cloud syncing and browser autofill are optional follow-on steps.
