If you need ordinary image and video files for other apps or folders, export them instead. These are different workflows: relocating the library preserves the Photos collection as a library, while exporting creates separate files.
Choose between moving the library and exporting files
| What you want | Use this method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Keep managing the collection in Photos | Move the Photos library package | The collection stays in a Photos library, including its organization and in-app state. iCloud Photos syncing depends on the library being the System Photo Library. |
| Use individual files in another app or folder system | Export from Photos | Separate image and video files on the external drive, using the export settings you choose. This does not relocate the complete library. |
Before moving a Photos library
- Use an external device formatted as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), as Apple specifies for a Photos library. See Apple’s instructions for moving a Photos library.
- Do not use a drive used for Time Machine backups, removable storage such as an SD card or USB flash drive, or storage shared over a network or the internet for the library.
- Make sure the drive has enough available space for the library. No universal library size or transfer time applies; both depend on your collection and setup.
- If iCloud Photos is enabled, check whether Photos has downloaded originals to the Mac or is using smaller optimized versions. Allow originals to download before relying on an export as a full-quality archive.
Move the complete Photos library
- Quit Photos. Do not drag the library while Photos is open.
- Find the library in Finder. It is normally in the Pictures folder inside your home folder. The library appears as a single package.
- Drag the library to the external drive. Wait for the copy to finish before opening it.
- Open the moved library. Double-click its copy on the external drive. Confirm that the expected photos and albums appear.
- Set it as the System Photo Library if needed. Do this if you use iCloud Photos or want the collection available in other apps’ Photo Picker. In Photos, open Settings, choose General, then select “Use as System Photo Library” if that option is available.
Keep the drive connected and available before opening Photos. Apple Support specifically warns: “Always make sure that your storage device is turned on and available before opening Photos.” If the drive is unavailable, Photos may open or create an empty library at the default location instead of the moved one.

Export separate photos and videos
Use export when you want standalone files rather than a Photos library package. In Photos, select the items you want, then choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos. Choose the export settings, select a destination folder on the external drive, and export. Apple documents this workflow in its Photos guide to downloading and exporting photos.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

If iCloud Photos keeps optimized versions on the Mac, the full originals may need to download when items are viewed or edited. Apple’s documentation does not specify one universal download time, so wait for the originals to become available before treating the exported files as a full-resolution archive.

Understand iCloud Photos and the System Photo Library
iCloud Photos stores originals in iCloud and can keep either originals or smaller versions on the Mac. The full original downloads when needed if the Mac is set to keep optimized versions. Only the System Photo Library syncs through iCloud Photos, Shared Albums, and iCloud Shared Photo Library. Moving a library does not by itself make it the System Photo Library; designate it in Photos if you want those services connected to the moved library.
Verify the result and keep a separate backup
- For a moved library, open the copy from the external drive and check that expected items appear before removing the Mac copy.
- For an export, inspect the destination folder and open representative files.
- Keep a separate backup of the library even if you use iCloud Photos. Apple recommends backing up the library locally as well.
- If the library contains referenced files stored outside the library package, those files are not included in a library backup. Back them up separately or use File > Consolidate to bring them into the library.
- Do not keep the Photos library and its Time Machine backup on the same device.
If Photos reports a permissions problem
In Finder, select the external drive and choose File > Get Info. Check the sharing and permissions section and the “Ignore ownership on this volume” setting, following Apple’s troubleshooting guidance. The setting may not be available if the drive has an unsuitable format or was used for Time Machine and has not been erased. Erasing a drive deletes its contents, so back up anything on it before considering that as a last resort.
