To move data from an iPhone to an Android phone, start the Android phone’s setup and choose the option to copy data from an iPhone. A cable usually supports more categories than the classic wireless route; wireless Android Switch is an option on supported devices when the iPhone runs iOS 15 or later. Turn off iMessage, arrange a separate transfer for iCloud Photos if needed, and use WhatsApp’s dedicated transfer flow before you erase the iPhone.
Before you start: prepare both phones
- Charge both phones and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Make sure you can unlock the iPhone and have enough free storage on the Android phone. If the Android phone is short on space, deselect large photo or video collections during transfer and handle cloud photos separately.
- Keep both phones nearby and connected until the Android setup and copying finish. Google says transfers usually take less than 30 minutes but may take a few hours for a large amount of data; treat that as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
- If the iPhone is managed by a workplace or school, its restrictions may prevent copying some data.
Start the transfer during Android setup
- Turn on the new Android phone and follow its setup prompts until you reach the option to copy apps and data.
- Choose the option for an iPhone or iPad, then follow the instructions shown on the Android screen. Some newer devices display a QR code. A Google Account may be required for particular data or services; follow the prompts for the transfer method you choose.
- Choose a cable or wireless transfer if both are offered. Exact labels, availability, and the point in setup where they appear vary by Android device and software version.

These are categories in Google’s support listings, not a guarantee that every item will transfer from every iPhone to every Android model. App, file, carrier, and account compatibility can affect the result; check the on-screen list for your devices. Google’s current guide lists supported data categories and transfer limitations.

Turn off iMessage before switching
On the iPhone, open Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage before removing the SIM or moving your number. Google warns that SMS and MMS messages may otherwise continue to arrive on the old iPhone. Its instruction is direct: “You must turn off iMessage on your iPhone.”
If you already removed the SIM or no longer have access to the iPhone, use Apple’s iMessage deregistration process to unregister your number. Some existing group conversations with iPhone users may need to be started again after the switch.

Move iCloud Photos separately
Photos and videos stored in iCloud are not included in the standard direct iPhone-to-Android transfer. Apple and Google document a separate request to copy eligible iCloud Photos to Google Photos. This request does not delete the originals from iCloud, and the stated processing window is three to seven days; it is an estimate, not an immediate sync.
The transfer requires enough storage in the Google Account. Some formats and features are not transferred, so do not assume that every album, edit, or Live Photo behavior will be preserved. Transfer WhatsApp chats without interrupting the process
If you want to keep WhatsApp chat history, use WhatsApp’s additional transfer flow rather than assuming the standard phone copy is enough. Google’s instructions require the same phone number and a Google Account. Do not open WhatsApp on the new Android phone until the chat transfer has finished, because doing so can interfere with migrating the history. Depending on the setup route and device, the prompts may involve a cable or a QR code. Follow the current Google instructions for transferring WhatsApp data.

What may not transfer
Google’s documented process does not transfer photos and videos stored in iCloud, paid apps or in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks, or Health data. Free apps listed in Google Play may be copied by the classic cable route, but that does not move paid purchases or guarantee that every iPhone app has an Android equivalent. Check with the app developer about app availability, account access, subscriptions, and any app-specific export or migration process.

Troubleshoot a transfer that stalls or misses data
Wireless pairing or QR code does not work
- Confirm that the iPhone runs iOS 15 or later and that wireless transfer is supported by the Android device.
- Check internet access, the iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection, and camera permission if scanning a QR code.
- If wireless is unavailable or too slow, use a cable if the devices and connectors permit it.
The Android phone runs out of storage
Return to the selection screen if available and deselect some data, starting with large photo and video collections. You can request the separate iCloud Photos copy if those originals are in iCloud and you have enough Google Account storage.
Texts do not arrive on the Android phone
Check that iMessage is off on every iOS device associated with your number, not just the old iPhone. Use Apple’s deregistration route if that iPhone is unavailable. Some group conversations may need to be recreated.

The transfer was interrupted or setup is already complete
Resume or post-setup copying options depend on the manufacturer and Android version. Some phones may require you to return to setup or reset the device to copy data again. Before resetting, check the manufacturer’s prompts and make sure you have a backup of anything already added to the Android phone. Google’s transfer troubleshooting guidance covers common incomplete-transfer and wireless issues.

- Photos and videos, including any separate iCloud Photos copy you requested

- Downloads, files, notes, and voice memos you rely on
- WhatsApp chats, if you used its dedicated transfer flow
- Important apps, account access, and app-specific data
Once you have confirmed the data is present and usable on Android, you can erase, trade in, or recycle the iPhone.
