You can move games in either direction. A Storage Expansion Card is optional: it lets Series X|S games run directly from additional storage, while an external USB drive can store optimized games but cannot run them.
Move a game between internal storage and the expansion card
- Insert the card, if needed. Remove its sleeve and press the compatible Storage Expansion Card into the dedicated expansion port until it clicks. Turn on the console; Seagate says the Xbox formats and configures the card automatically. Seagate’s installation guide notes that games do not install to the card by default.
- Open the source storage. On the console, go to Settings > Storage and select the volume where the game is currently installed. Seagate says that view displays installed titles and provides controls to move titles between storage volumes. Seagate’s storage FAQ describes the storage-volume view.
- Select the title and destination. Choose the game or games to move, select the other volume, and confirm if prompted. Seagate’s transfer guide describes selecting the source drive and using Transfer; labels and prompts may vary by console software version. See Seagate’s transfer guide.
To move a game back to the internal SSD, repeat the same process but select the expansion card as the source and internal storage as the destination. The key is to start from the volume that currently contains the installed game.

These compatibility details come from Seagate’s Xbox storage compatibility information. If you only need to free internal space, a suitable USB drive can hold an optimized game until you want to play it again. If you want that game to remain playable from the added storage, use the expansion card.

The expansion card does not automatically become the default install location. If you want new installs to go there, change the console’s default storage device in Xbox settings. Seagate’s FAQ points to Xbox console support for that setting, but the available material does not establish a current exact menu sequence; labels can vary with system software.

Expansion card capacities
Seagate’s support page lists the Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S in 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models, with model IDs STJR512400, STJR1000400, STJR2000400, and STJR4000400 respectively. The product page describes 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Availability can differ by country and change over time, so check the specific listing before buying. You do not need to buy an expansion card to move games. It is an optional upgrade for added storage that can run Series X|S games directly; USB storage is another option when storing games for later transfer is enough.
