Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo move Windows 11’s Downloads folder, change the folder’s location in its Properties—not just a browser’s download setting. In File Explorer, open Downloads’ Properties, choose Location > Move, and select a dedicated folder on the other drive, such as D:Downloads.
Before you move Downloads
Make sure the destination drive has enough free space for the files already in Downloads, if you plan to move them too. Create a dedicated destination folder first—for example, D:Downloads—rather than selecting the drive root. Keeping Downloads in its own folder makes it easier to identify and manage.

A second internal drive works if your PC has one. You can also use external storage, such as a USB drive; Microsoft notes that files stored on external storage are available when that drive is connected. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing drive space.

Move the Windows Downloads folder
- Open File Explorer and select Downloads in the navigation pane or Home. In Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, known folders such as Downloads are pinned in Home and the navigation pane by default; the layout can vary by Windows build. See Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance.
- Right-click Downloads and select Properties.
- Open the Location tab and select Move.
- Browse to the destination folder you created, such as
D:Downloads, and select it. Confirm the destination when prompted. Microsoft documents this Location-tab method for moving personal folders such as Downloads: Windows Client troubleshooting: user profiles and folders. - If Windows asks whether to move the existing files, read the prompt and choose whether to move them. Moving relocates the current contents; declining leaves those files in their existing location while changing the folder path.
When Windows finishes, return to the Location tab and check the displayed path. Open Downloads and confirm it shows the folder you intended.

Which setting should you change?
Windows has several controls that sound similar but affect different things. Choose the one that matches what you want to change.
| What you want | Setting | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Move the Windows Downloads known folder | Downloads > Properties > Location > Move | The location Windows uses for the Downloads folder. |
| Change where Microsoft Edge saves downloads | Edge > Settings > Downloads | Edge’s download path. This is separate from Windows’ Downloads-folder location. See Microsoft Edge download settings. |
| Choose a drive for new content by type | Windows Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved | A drive choice for supported content types; it does not itself relocate the existing Downloads known folder. See Microsoft’s storage settings guidance. |
Other browsers have their own download-location settings, so changing a browser’s path will not necessarily change where Windows’ Downloads folder points.

If the Location tab is missing or the folder locations are merged
Microsoft documents a failure case in which a personal folder such as Downloads was redirected to another personal folder and a later location change failed. Pointing one personal folder at another can result in an access-denied error or merged folder locations. Avoid selecting another known folder—such as Documents—as the destination; use a separate folder like D:Downloads.
Microsoft’s advanced registry workaround
For the documented redirection failure, Microsoft’s workaround resets the Downloads registry value to its default path. Registry editing is advanced: Microsoft warns that incorrect changes can cause serious problems. Back up the registry first, and seek qualified help if you are unsure.
