If you can, try finalists at your actual workstation: a chair that feels suitable in a showroom may not work with your desk, keyboard, or preferred sitting position.
Start with your desk and the way you use it
A chair is one part of a workstation. Your desk height, keyboard and monitor positions, flooring, and room to move all affect whether a chair works. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) puts it plainly: “One chair does not fit everyone.” It says a chair becomes ergonomic only when it suits the user’s body dimensions, workstation, and tasks. Think about the hours you spend typing, gaming with a controller, leaning toward a screen, or reclining between tasks. A feature is useful only if it lets you sit and work comfortably in your setup; a long list of adjustments is not a substitute for fit.
Check the fit in this order
1. Seat height and foot support
Adjust the chair so your feet rest fully on the floor or a footrest, without pressure under your thighs. Your arms should also be able to reach the work surface without your shoulders lifting. If a fixed-height desk means you need to raise the chair to work comfortably, but your feet no longer reach the floor, CCOHS recommends an adjustable footrest that supports both feet. See its chair-adjustment guidance. A footrest is a solution to that particular height mismatch, not a requirement for every setup.

2. Seat depth and width
Sit back against the backrest and check that the front edge of the seat does not press behind your knees. Compare the chair’s seat depth with your leg length; a seat that is too deep can keep you from using the backrest comfortably. Check width too: you should have room to sit naturally without the sides restricting you.
3. Backrest and lumbar support
The backrest should support your sitting position, with lower-back support that can be placed where it suits you. Look for adjustments that let you change the fit rather than forcing your back into a fixed position. Avoid settings that create pressure points. If you alternate between upright work and reclining, make sure the backrest can accommodate both positions in a way you find comfortable.

4. Armrests and desk clearance
Check armrest height and spacing while seated at your desk. They should support your arms without making you raise your shoulders, and they should not stop the chair from moving close enough to the desk. If armrests are adjustable, test those adjustments at the work surface—not just while sitting away from it.
5. Surface, base, and casters
Consider the chair’s material in the context of your climate and household: heat, moisture, wear, cleaning, and repair all matter. Check that the base feels stable and that the casters suit your floor. These practical details affect whether the chair remains comfortable and usable over time.

Compare gaming and office chairs by specifications, not labels
Use the same fit checklist for either category. Compare published seat-height range, seat depth and width, backrest and lumbar adjustments, armrest positioning, recline, and desk clearance. Confirm that each candidate’s dimensions work for your body and workstation; the words “gaming” and “ergonomic” do not establish that on their own.
For example, Secretlab’s US TITAN Evo product page describes four-way lumbar adjustment, four-dimensional armrests, a reclining backrest, and S, R, and XL size options. Its technical specification dated February 24, 2025 lists seat depths of 48 cm for Small, 49 cm for Regular, and 50 cm for XL. It lists floor-to-seatbase ranges of 45–52 cm for Small and Regular, and 46–55.5 cm for XL. These are manufacturer-stated features and dimensions, not independent comfort testing or proof that a particular size will fit you. Try the chair in your real setup
If possible, sit in shortlisted chairs at a desk arranged like yours. Check whether you can reach your keyboard, keep your feet supported, use the backrest, and move the chair close enough to the desk. Try the positions you actually use for work and gaming. CCOHS recommends trying chairs where feasible because comfort and preference vary between people.

Before buying, check the seller’s current return terms separately; they can change and may differ by seller. Compare current prices and written warranty coverage at the time of purchase rather than assuming one chair category offers better value or protection.
Adjust the whole workstation, not just the chair
Position the chair along with the desk, keyboard, and monitor. If changing chair height solves one problem but creates another—such as unsupported feet or armrests that hit the desk—reassess the setup rather than treating the chair as the only variable. Also make practical room in your day to stand, walk, or change position; a chair alone cannot resolve every workstation issue.
