Check what Wi-Fi bands and security your device supports, then create a separate guest or IoT network on your router with compatible settings. Many older devices need 2.4 GHz, WPA2, or both—but age alone does not tell you which. Before enabling network isolation, check whether the device must communicate with a phone, printer, hub, or computer on your main network.
1. Check what the device supports
Look up the device’s Wi-Fi requirements in its manual or the manufacturer’s support pages. Confirm its supported frequency bands—2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or both—and its Wi-Fi security options. Do not assume every older device is limited to 2.4 GHz or WPA2.

Use those requirements to choose the new network’s settings. A 2.4 GHz network is a common compatibility option, not a guarantee that a particular device will connect. If the device cannot use WPA3, look for WPA2-Personal as an alternative.

Sign in to your router’s app or administration page and look for Guest Network, IoT Network, or an option to add a separate Wi-Fi network (SSID). Feature names and availability depend on the router, firmware, and operating mode.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Some routers let you choose a separate network’s security and working band. TP-Link documents those controls for a Deco guest network; ASUS describes an IoT network using WPA2-Personal for devices that do not support WPA3. Check your model’s instructions before changing settings: TP-Link’s guest-network setup guide and ASUS’s Wi-Fi 7 IoT compatibility guidance.
3. Choose the right setup
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Guest network | Your router offers a separate SSID with the band and security settings the device needs. | Guest networks may restrict access to devices on the main network. Isolation behavior depends on router mode and settings; TP-Link, for example, says Deco guest and main networks are automatically isolated in Router mode. |
| IoT network | Your router has a dedicated network with settings intended for smart devices or older clients. | Check whether phones or computers on the main network can still reach the device. Verizon describes an IoT Wi-Fi use case on 2.4 GHz and says IoT devices can be accessible from the primary network. |
| WPA2/WPA3 transition mode | Your router offers this option and the device needs WPA2 while newer clients can use WPA3. | Apple describes the mode as WPA3 Personal for supported devices and WPA2 Personal (AES) for older ones. Availability and compatibility depend on the router and client. |
| Separate access point or replacement router | Your current router cannot provide a suitable second network. | Additional hardware and configuration are required. For example, ASUS documents independent networks and VLAN combinations in Guest Network Pro for listed models; verify exact model support and setup requirements. |
Read the router’s explanation of local access before choosing an option. A separate network name does not, by itself, establish how devices on the two networks can communicate.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
4. Create the network and connect the device
- Open your router’s app or administration page and select its guest, IoT, or add-network option. Follow the instructions for your specific router; there is no universal menu path.
- Give the network a distinct name and set a strong password. Do not use open security.
- If the device requires 2.4 GHz, select that band if your router allows it. If it cannot use WPA3, select WPA2-Personal where available.
- Connect the older device to the new network using its Wi-Fi setup menu or companion app.
- Test the device’s main function and internet access. If it depends on a setup app, phone, printer, casting device, or local hub, test that connection too.
5. Check whether network isolation breaks anything
Guest and IoT networks can limit communication between connected devices, but the exact behavior varies. TP-Link says Deco guest and main networks are automatically isolated in Router mode, while AP mode offers an Allow Local Access setting. Verizon says its IoT devices can be accessible from the primary Wi-Fi network. These examples illustrate why you should check your own router’s model-specific settings rather than assume all guest networks work alike.
If a phone app cannot discover the device, or printing, casting, or hub control stops working, the router may be blocking the local communication that feature needs. Review its guest or IoT network access controls and adjust them only as needed. Consult the router manual for the implications of allowing local access.

6. If your router does not offer the needed settings
Check the router manual or manufacturer support for your model and operating mode before concluding the feature is unavailable. If the router truly cannot create a network with the required band and security settings, a router or access point that supports multiple SSIDs may be an option. Advanced multi-network or VLAN configurations are model-dependent and may require more setup than a basic guest network.
