Install Office on the new Mac from the Microsoft account linked to your license, then open an Office app and sign in to activate it. The right steps for the old Mac depend on whether you have a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase, so identify your license and account before changing or removing anything.
Before you move Office, identify the license and account
Office is installed and activated on the new Mac through Microsoft; there is no physical transfer accessory or license-transfer cable. The Office license and your personal files are separate: moving documents does not move or activate the license.

- Microsoft 365: Use the Microsoft account associated with the subscription, or the work or school account assigned by your organization.
- One-time purchase: Check the exact edition and its Software License Terms before assuming it can be moved to another computer. Microsoft describes transfers as conditional, not a blanket right for every purchase.
- Product key: If you have an unredeemed key, redeem it once and link it to the correct Microsoft account. After redemption, use that account for later downloads and installs rather than trying to reuse the key.

Install Office on the new Mac
- Check compatibility: Review Microsoft’s current system requirements for your macOS version and Office edition before installing.
- Get the installer: Sign in to your Microsoft account page with the account linked to Office and choose the option to install Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Run the package: Open the downloaded
.pkginstaller and follow the on-screen prompts. Enter the Mac administrator password if requested. - Open an Office app: When installation finishes, launch Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or another installed Office app.
Use Microsoft’s download and installation instructions for the current account-page flow and system requirements; labels and availability can vary by product and account.

Activate Office with the license account
When the app’s first-run setup appears, choose Get Started and sign in with the email address associated with the license. Microsoft checks that account and activates the app if it has an eligible license. For an organization-provided license, sign in with the assigned work or school account; a personal account may not activate it.
If the app shows a different account than the one that owns the license, sign out and retry with the correct account. Microsoft’s Office for Mac activation guidance covers the sign-in flow and product-key redemption.

What to do with Office on the old Mac

Microsoft’s Office deactivation instructions describe remote sign-out, while its different-device activation guidance explains the conditional process for eligible one-time purchases. Follow the instructions that match your license rather than removing Office from the old Mac by default.

- Verify the account: Confirm that you signed in with the personal Microsoft account that owns the license or the work or school account assigned to you.
- Restart the app: If Office appears activated but keeps prompting, quit the app completely and reopen it.
- Check for a license conflict: An old one-time license or the wrong account may be selected when a subscription is also present. Resolve the account or license selection issue before removing files.
- Use license removal only when appropriate: Microsoft’s Mac license-removal tool is a troubleshooting step, not part of a routine move. It removes Office license files from the Mac, so make sure you have the correct account credentials available to reactivate before using it.
