Some Xbox game saves sync to Windows PCs, but there is no universal Xbox-to-PC transfer. Save syncing depends on the specific game—Microsoft’s general guarantee applies to participating Xbox Play Anywhere titles, while other games are not required to roam saves between Xbox consoles and Windows. Game progress, an installed copy, and the right to play a PC edition are separate things, so check the exact title before switching devices or deleting data.
First, separate saves, installations, and game licenses
Moving between Xbox and PC can mean three different things:

- Save data: Your progress, which may sync through the game or platform when you sign in.
- The game installation: The files needed to run a game on a particular device. An Xbox console installation is not a Windows PC edition that you can simply copy over.
- The license: The entitlement that lets you play. Owning a console version does not generally grant a Windows version; Xbox Play Anywhere titles are a defined exception for participating games.
Use the exact game’s listing and publisher support information to verify its supported platforms, cross-save behavior, and PC system requirements.

Xbox Play Anywhere games
For a participating digital Xbox Play Anywhere title, Microsoft says progress is saved with your gamertag so you can continue on another supported device after signing in. These titles can be accessed or installed on compatible Xbox consoles and Windows devices, subject to the rules for the individual game. That does not make the feature universal: the game must participate, and the device must be supported. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules explain the program and its limits.

Other Xbox games
For games outside Play Anywhere, Xbox-to-Windows save roaming is not guaranteed. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit policy says roaming saves between Windows and Xbox console platforms is recommended, not required. Its separate expectation that saves roam between Windows PCs should not be read as a promise that a console save will appear on PC. Microsoft’s XR-052 policy spells out that distinction.
A PC store page mentioning cloud saves does not by itself establish console-to-PC save support. Nor should you assume there is a general user-facing way to download an Xbox cloud save as a file. Check the exact title’s cross-save documentation before relying on a transfer.

Check the exact game before switching
- Find the title in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, or consult its publisher’s support page.
- Confirm that the Windows PC version exists and whether the title is marked Xbox Play Anywhere or explicitly supports Xbox-to-PC cross-save.
- Check whether your existing purchase or subscription covers the PC edition; do not infer a Windows license from an Xbox console purchase or from a launcher displaying the game.
- On the destination device, sign in with the account used for the game, launch the supported version, and allow any indicated sync to finish before playing or changing save data.
- Check PC system requirements and the game’s own instructions. Keep the old save and installation until you have confirmed the expected progress is available.
Xbox Wire reported on January 21, 2026, that Xbox was rolling out a game-save sync indicator to PC and handheld devices. Rollout and availability can change, so check the current app rather than assuming every player or game has the indicator. Xbox Wire’s January 2026 update also reported that more than 1,000 games then supported Xbox Play Anywhere; that is a dated count, not a guaranteed current catalog total.
How to restore a Microsoft Store PC game
If you are reinstalling an eligible Microsoft purchase on a PC, use the account that bought it and check the Store’s library or order history. Microsoft’s instructions describe finding and installing downloads there. Availability can differ by device, so confirm the game has a compatible PC version before expecting it to install. For a Play Anywhere title, the participating entitlement can cover compatible Windows and Xbox devices under the program rules. For other titles, check whether the PC version requires a separate purchase or subscription. A title appearing in an Xbox PC library after linking or aggregating another storefront does not, on its own, transfer that storefront’s license or its save data.

If you mean files on an old Windows PC—not an Xbox console save—Microsoft lists external storage as one way to move files to a new Windows PC. A portable external SSD may be suitable for ordinary files, subject to the game’s save location, permissions, and publisher instructions. That Windows file-migration method does not export Xbox cloud saves, transfer an Xbox license, or turn a console installation into a PC game.

Save locations and protections vary by PC game, including Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass titles. Do not rely on one universal folder path or overwrite a save based on a generic migration guide. Follow the publisher’s directions for that game and back up local data before replacing or deleting files.

Before you erase or reset anything
- Verify that the exact game supports Xbox-to-PC save continuity; a cloud-save label alone is not enough.
- Confirm that the PC edition is included in your entitlement and works on the destination PC.
- Keep the source device and its data intact until the destination shows the expected progress.
- For manual Windows file moves, follow the game publisher’s save instructions and make a backup first.
