Use Apple’s Move to iOS transfer during the iPhone’s initial setup to move supported Android content, including camera photos and videos, contacts, message history, and WhatsApp messages and media. Keep both phones powered and nearby until the iPhone’s progress bar finishes, then check the transferred data before you erase or trade in your Android phone. No transfer method guarantees that every app or item will move.
Choose what you want to transfer before setup
Decide whether you want photos and calendars imported into Apple’s apps or prefer to keep using Google Photos and Google Calendar. Google’s checklist says to uncheck Apple Photos or Apple Calendar in the transfer selection if you want to access those Google services after signing in on the iPhone. For Google Contacts, use the separate sync instructions linked from Google’s transfer checklist.

Also check the iPhone’s available storage against the content you plan to move, including files on an external Micro SD card. Apple lists camera photos and videos, photo albums, contacts, message history and SMS messages, WhatsApp messages and media, files and folders, web bookmarks, mail accounts, Voice Memos, call history, calendars, and some settings among the content that can transfer. This is not a promise that every app or all app data will migrate.
Move data with Apple’s setup transfer
- Prepare both phones. Turn on Wi-Fi and charge or connect both phones to power. Check that the selected content fits in the iPhone’s available storage.
- Start iPhone setup. On the iPhone’s Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, select From Android, then Transfer with App.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Follow its prompts, enter the one-time code displayed on the iPhone, and join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone.
- Choose the content. Select the categories you want to move, including contacts, photos and videos, messages, and WhatsApp messages and media if those are part of your plan.
- Wait for the iPhone to finish. Keep the phones near each other and leave Move to iOS open on Android. Don’t answer a call, switch apps, or otherwise use the Android phone during the transfer. The Android screen may report completion first; wait until the iPhone’s loading bar finishes.
Apple says a direct USB-C connection is an optional alternative that may be faster; Google describes a cable as more reliable than Wi-Fi. Use a cable that supports data and is compatible with both phones. Wireless transfer is also supported, so a cable is not mandatory. If iPhone setup is already complete
Apple’s guided Move to iOS flow is available during initial setup. To use it after setup is complete, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and start setup again. Before doing that, make sure the iPhone contains nothing you need that is not backed up elsewhere. If you do not want to erase it, move content manually instead.
Compatible Android phones may offer transfer without the app
Apple also documents a Transfer without App option during setup. It requires a compatible Android 17 or later version, and availability depends on the device manufacturer. If the option is available, select From Android, then Transfer without App; pair the phones by scanning the iPhone’s QR code or using the alternate pairing details, then select supported content such as photos, contacts, calendars, call history, and messages. Check your phone maker’s documentation to determine compatibility.

What to expect for photos, contacts, and chats
Photos and videos
Apple lists camera photos, videos, and photo albums among the transferable content. If instead you want to keep viewing your Google Photos library in Google Photos, leave Apple Photos unchecked during transfer and sign in to Google on the iPhone. These are different paths: one transfers selected content into Apple’s setup flow; the other keeps Google Photos as the service you use. The available instructions do not establish every album, metadata, or cloud-backup edge case.
Contacts
Select Contacts in Move to iOS, then inspect names and important fields on the iPhone. If you keep your address book in Google, you can use Google’s separate iPhone contact-sync instructions linked from its transfer checklist.

SMS and WhatsApp
Apple lists message history and SMS messages, as well as WhatsApp messages and media, among transferable content. Select the relevant categories in the transfer flow. Afterward, open WhatsApp and your message app on the iPhone and check the conversations and media you care about before retiring the Android phone. Apple’s cited instructions do not provide a detailed WhatsApp eligibility checklist, so confirm the result on your devices rather than assuming every chat or item transferred.
What may need to be moved separately
- Music, books, and PDFs: Apple says these need to be moved manually.
- Apps: Some free apps may be matched if they are available in both stores and support the transfer feature. You may still need to download matched apps again from the App Store.
- Other app data: Apple’s list does not guarantee that all Android app data or every app will transfer. Check essential apps individually after setup.
If the transfer stalls or appears incomplete
- Keep Move to iOS open on Android, and wait for the iPhone’s loading bar—not just the Android screen—to finish.
- Turn off Android settings that may interfere with Wi-Fi. Apple names Sprint Connections Optimizer and Smart Network Switch as examples.
- If the transfer fails, restart both devices and turn off cellular data on Android before trying again.
- If the iPhone runs out of storage or appears full even though the transfer did not finish, Apple says to erase it and repeat the transfer after checking that the selected Android content fits. Make sure there is nothing on the iPhone you need before erasing it.
Check the result before retiring your Android
On the iPhone, open Photos and check representative photos and videos, inspect key contacts and fields, and open Messages and WhatsApp to verify important conversations and media. Check any other files or app data you rely on. Keep the Android phone intact until you have confirmed the content you need is available on the iPhone or backed up elsewhere.

Your phone number may be activated during the move, but your carrier may require you to finish activation on its website. Whether that applies depends on the carrier and device.
