You can move personal files from a Mac to a Chromebook by uploading them to Google Drive or another cloud service, or by copying them to a compatible USB flash drive or external hard drive. Then sign in to the Chromebook with the relevant Google Account or connect the drive and use the Files app. This transfers files—not a complete copy of macOS, its apps, settings, or Apple-specific libraries.
Choose how to transfer your files
| Route | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive or another cloud service | Files you want to access across devices without relying on a particular drive format | The Mac must upload the files, and you’ll need network access for that initial transfer. Confirm the upload finished and that you can access the account on the Chromebook. Google also documents Box and SMB file-share options. Google’s Chromebook switch guide |
| USB flash drive | A smaller offline transfer or an extra copy of files | Check the drive’s format and whether the Chromebook has a compatible port or can use a suitable adapter. Google’s transfer guidance and storage-device compatibility details |
| External hard drive | A larger collection or an offline archive | Check its format and connection. Keep another copy until you’ve verified the files on the Chromebook; formatting erases the drive. Google’s storage-device guidance |
Prepare the Mac and Chromebook
- Make a practical inventory. Check the Mac’s Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders, along with any photo or media collections you need. This is a useful personal checklist, not a guarantee that every macOS library can be migrated intact.
- Check storage and connection details. For an external drive, find its filesystem and compare its connector with the Chromebook’s available ports. Support for a filesystem does not guarantee every Chromebook port, hub, or cable will work.
- Check cloud access and space. If using Drive, make sure the account you’ll use on the Chromebook can access the uploaded files. Verify uploads have completed before depending on them; no fixed upload time or migration-specific storage quota is established here.
- Keep a second copy. Do not erase the Mac’s copies or format a drive until you have checked the transferred files. Formatting deletes the drive’s contents.
Transfer files with Google Drive
- On the Mac, upload the files you need to Google Drive or another cloud service.
- On the Chromebook, sign in to the Google Account that can access those files.
- Open Files > Google Drive. Google notes that files can take a few moments to appear. Google’s Chromebook switch guide
- Open representative files to confirm they arrived and work as expected before removing other copies.
For files you need without an internet connection, Drive files can be made available offline when the Chromebook has enough local storage. Google’s switch guide

Transfer files with a USB flash drive or external hard drive
- On the Mac, copy the files to the drive. Copying is safer than moving them because the Mac retains its copy while you check the transfer.
- Connect the drive to the Chromebook. Open the Files app and select the drive in the left column.
- Copy the files you want into My files if you need local copies on the Chromebook. Local storage is limited, so avoid copying a large archive without checking the device’s available space.
- When finished, safely eject the drive. Keep its contents and the Mac’s copies until you have verified important files.
Google lists FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS among the filesystems Chromebooks can access. Journaled HFS+ is read-only; other listed formats may also have read-only or other limitations. See Google’s external-storage compatibility guidance.

If the Chromebook does not recognize the drive, do not format it as a first troubleshooting step: formatting erases its contents. Instead, reconnect it to the Mac or another computer and upload the files to cloud storage, or make another verified copy before considering any format change. Google’s guidance lists supported formats but does not guarantee that every drive, port, or adapter will work with every Chromebook.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Restore Chrome browser data separately
File transfer does not restore browser data, and signing in does not transfer your Mac’s local downloads. If you used Chrome on the Mac, sign in to Chrome and enable sync for the information you want; then sign in on the Chromebook with the same Google Account. Depending on your sync settings, supported data can include bookmarks, history, passwords, Wi-Fi networks, settings, apps, extensions, and themes. Downloaded files are excluded. A work or school administrator may disable sync. Google’s Chromebook switch guide
Check that transferred files will open
A successful copy does not guarantee that a file’s format or codec is supported. Chromebooks can open many common documents, images, PDFs, and media formats, but support varies by file type and app. Google lists .ppt and .pptx as read-only in its file-type guidance and says AMR, GSM, AVI, and MPEG4 are no longer supported. Check Google’s file and storage compatibility information, then test important files in the apps you plan to use.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory

Before retiring the Mac, open a sample of your key documents, photos, and media on the Chromebook. Confirm that the folders you need are present and that your chosen apps can use the files. Keep the Mac or another backup intact until you have checked important files and any Apple-specific libraries: the documented transfer routes do not establish that Apple Photos libraries, Mail data, macOS apps, or every setting will become equivalent ChromeOS data or apps.
Plan for the Chromebook’s available space
Downloads are stored locally by default, and low-space cleanup may affect local files. Chromebook storage is limited; check the device’s capacity before copying an entire archive. Drive files set to be available offline also use local space, so leave room for them and other files you need on the device. Google’s switch guide and Google’s local and offline storage guidance
