How to Move Files from OneDrive to an Open-Source Cloud Storage Service

Move OneDrive files to Nextcloud or ownCloud with rclone or a computer-based upload. Compare the routes, prepare for online-only files, and verify the copy before retiring OneDrive.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can move files from OneDrive to an open-source cloud service such as Nextcloud or ownCloud with rclone, or by downloading files to a computer and uploading them through the destination’s app or website. Use a copy-first migration: keep OneDrive intact until you have checked the destination and any separate backup. File transfers do not necessarily recreate sharing links, permissions, or version history.

Choose a transfer route

Use rclone if you are comfortable with command-line configuration and want to transfer between cloud accounts without staging all files on your computer. Use a local download-and-upload route if you prefer a graphical workflow or want to inspect files as they move.

Consideration rclone cloud-to-cloud Download and upload
Setup Requires command-line use, authorization for OneDrive, and configured source and destination remotes. See rclone’s OneDrive instructions and the ownCloud migration guide for the general remote-to-remote pattern. Uses local storage plus the destination’s upload method. On Windows, check that OneDrive Files On-Demand items are actually downloaded when you need local copies; Microsoft explains what happens when such files are moved outside the OneDrive folder: Files On-Demand for Windows.
Local disk May avoid a complete local staging copy when both remotes are accessible to rclone. Needs enough free space for the files you download, unless you deliberately work in smaller batches.
Transfer behavior Server-side copying is available only for supported remote combinations. Otherwise, rclone downloads and re-uploads data; see rclone’s copy and sync documentation. Files pass through the computer before being uploaded to the destination.
Good fit People comfortable with account authorization and command-line setup. People who prefer a visual workflow or want to review files locally.
What not to assume Do not assume OneDrive shares, permissions, version history, or every metadata field will transfer intact. A normal file upload also does not promise to recreate service-specific sharing, permissions, or history.

Prepare before copying

Check the OneDrive account and contents

Identify whether the source is a personal or work/school OneDrive account. List the folders you intend to move and note expected file counts and sizes. Check shared items separately: a file visible in your account may have different ownership or access rules than a file you own. If the account belongs to an employer or school, confirm its policy and your continuing access before transferring organizational material.

Choose and prepare the destination

Decide whether to operate Nextcloud or ownCloud yourself or use a managed provider. Nextcloud publishes provider information and partner information; compare administration responsibilities, storage and backup terms, data location, and migration support. These sources do not establish a universally best host or a universal capacity limit for this cross-service move. Confirm available space, upload limits, and naming or path restrictions with your administrator or provider.

Make a separate backup

Keep a recoverable copy of important files before migration. The ownCloud guide to its rclone migration example puts it plainly: “And of course: Have a backup!” That guide demonstrates a Nextcloud-to-ownCloud Infinite Scale move, so it supports the general value of backup and the use of rclone remotes—not a tested OneDrive-to-Nextcloud recipe.

Move files with rclone

Use the current rclone documentation for the installed version, since backend options and flags can change. The steps below describe the workflow rather than prescribing version-specific commands.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

  1. Install rclone using its official installation instructions, then open a terminal or command prompt.
  2. Configure the OneDrive remote. Follow the OneDrive backend guide and authorize access in the browser when prompted. The setup describes choosing a personal or business OneDrive or a SharePoint site; the available choices depend on account type and current backend behavior.
  3. Configure the destination remote. Use the destination service’s current supported-backend or WebDAV instructions, as applicable. Keep credentials private; do not put passwords or tokens in a public script or shareable command.
  4. Test a small, representative folder first. Include ordinary files, nested folders, and, if relevant, a large file. Inspect the copied results before transferring everything.
  5. Copy the remaining files. For an initial migration, choose a copy operation rather than a sync or move operation. Read rclone’s documentation before using flags that can delete or overwrite destination files. Do not assume a transfer will stay server-side: that depends on whether both remotes support the required operation.
  6. Verify the destination before changing the source. Check the expected folders and representative files, then retain OneDrive until the destination and backup are confirmed.

Move files through your computer

  1. Check free disk space for the files you plan to stage. You can work in smaller batches if you cannot hold the full collection locally.
  2. Make files available locally. On Windows, OneDrive Files On-Demand can display cloud-only placeholders that are not stored as full local files and cannot be opened offline. Microsoft says that moving these files outside the OneDrive folder downloads them to the new location; confirm the local copies are available before relying on them. The cited guidance is specifically for Windows.
  3. Download or copy a batch to a local folder, then upload it using the destination’s desktop client or web interface. Follow the destination provider’s current upload guidance.
  4. Inspect the uploaded batch before proceeding. Check folder structure, file names, and that representative files open from the destination.
  5. Continue in batches until the required content has been uploaded. Keep the source intact while you check the complete destination copy.

Verify what matters beyond the files

A successful file copy is not necessarily a complete collaboration migration. rclone normally preserves modification time and MIME type where possible; its documentation describes broader metadata handling with a flag. That does not establish that OneDrive sharing links, access-control permissions, comments, or version history transfer to Nextcloud or ownCloud.

  • Open a sample of files, including large files and less common formats.
  • Compare representative nested folders and file names against the source.
  • Check modified times and file types where those details matter to your workflow.
  • Review shared links, permissions, comments, and version history independently; recreate or preserve them through a separate process if needed.
  • Retain OneDrive and your backup until you have confirmed the destination meets your needs.

When Nextcloud server-side maintenance is needed

If you administer the Nextcloud server and files copied directly into its storage do not appear in the interface, consult the current Nextcloud administration manual. It lists occ files:scan for scanning files and occ files:cleanup for cleaning up cache entries without matching storage records. These are administrative maintenance commands, not steps for ordinary users uploading through the client or web interface. Follow the manual for your server version and use the commands only when appropriate.
