Find the stage where the problem occurs before changing files: opening the map in TrenchBroom, compiling it, or loading the compiled map in a game. For TrenchBroom, check the selected game and map format, the configured Quake directory and mod, the map’s WAD references, and—if you use loose images—the required texture-folder layout. A QuakeForge error naming gfx.wad has a separate documented cause: the program may not be finding pak0.pak.
First identify where the map fails
A missing texture while editing is not the same problem as a compile error or a map that fails at runtime. The likely asset lookup also depends on whether the map uses WAD files, loose images, or game and mod data. The TrenchBroom manual documents editor configuration and WAD handling; the QuakeForge FAQ documents a particular asset-loading error. Those sources do not establish one universal fix for every Quake engine, compiler, or port.

- Map will not open correctly, or materials are missing in TrenchBroom: check the selected game and map format, game path, active mod, and asset locations.
- Compilation cannot find textures or WADs: check the map’s WAD references and confirm the compiler can access the referenced files.
- The compiled map fails in the game: note the exact engine or port, full console error, and compiler output before changing asset paths. These details are needed to distinguish a map problem from an engine-specific lookup issue.
Check TrenchBroom’s game and map-format selection
TrenchBroom tries to detect the game and format from a map file, but its manual notes that detection can fail. Confirm that the editor is treating the file as a Quake map and has the correct format selected. Quake maps may use Standard or Valve 220 format; choosing the wrong format can interfere with how the editor interprets the map.

Verify the Quake game directory and active mod
TrenchBroom uses id1 as Quake’s default mod. Additional mods are directories within the game directory and can provide their own assets. Make sure the configured game path points to the installation containing the files the map needs, and that the active mod corresponds to the target game or mod. If the game configuration points elsewhere, the editor may not find materials and other resources.
Use the game configuration controls in TrenchBroom to confirm the game path and selected mod. Do not assume that a path for one Quake installation or mod will also contain another installation’s assets.

Check the map’s WAD references
Quake maps can refer to texture WADs through the wad property in the map’s worldspawn. TrenchBroom stores WAD paths there, and the manual says map compilers also use those references to locate WAD files.

- Open the map’s worldspawn properties in TrenchBroom and inspect the
wadvalue. - Check each listed path in the semicolon-separated value. Confirm that the WAD exists at the referenced location and is accessible to the editor and compiler.
- If the path is missing or incorrect, use TrenchBroom’s WAD controls to add the correct file or reload the WAD, then verify that the map references the intended file.
See the TrenchBroom manual’s WAD-texture documentation for the editor’s WAD controls and map references.

Use the required folder layout for loose textures
If the custom textures are loose image files rather than a WAD, TrenchBroom’s generic-game material layout requires a textures directory under the configured game path or a loaded mod. Put the images in a collection directory exactly one level below textures, for example textures/customset/brick.png.
- Detected layout:
textures/collection-name/image-file. - Not detected by TrenchBroom: an image placed directly in
textures, or an image nested more deeply than one collection directory.
After correcting the layout, refresh or reload the materials in TrenchBroom. The manual’s materials documentation describes where loose materials belong.

For QuakeForge’s “unable to load gfx.wad” error
Apply this check only when using QuakeForge and seeing the specific error W_LoadWadFile: unable to load gfx.wad. QuakeForge’s FAQ says the most common cause is that QuakeForge cannot find pak0.pak. This is a base-game-data lookup issue, not proof that every missing texture in a custom map has the same cause.

QuakeForge documents searches in $fs_userpath/id1 and $fs_sharepath/id1. Its stated defaults are platform-dependent: on Windows, both paths default to the current directory; on Linux and other Unix-like systems, the user path defaults to ~/.quakeforge and the share path to $prefix/share/games/quakeforge. Distribution packages may change the precise path. Check the paths for your installation and make sure the expected Quake base data, including pak0.pak, is available where QuakeForge looks.

If the map still fails in-game
Do not apply TrenchBroom or QuakeForge path advice as a blanket fix for every runtime failure. Record the engine or port name, exact console message, map format, and compiler output. Then classify the missing asset as base-game data, mod content, a WAD, or a loose image, and compare its expected location with the paths configured for that specific engine and installation. Quake II has a different asset layout; Quake WAD-path instructions should not be substituted for Quake II troubleshooting.
