Copy your personal files to the Windows laptop using OneDrive, an external drive, or a local network share. Apps need a separate approach: install each app’s Windows version, then use its publisher’s guidance to restore your license and bring over any app-specific data. Copying a Mac app to Windows will not make it run there.
Choose a file-transfer method
The right option depends on how much data you have, whether you have reliable internet, and whether you already own a suitable drive. Microsoft documents OneDrive and removable or network storage as ways to move files to a new PC; Apple documents sharing Mac files with Windows users over a local network.

| Method | Internet needed? | Useful when | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive | Yes | You want files available across devices and have sufficient cloud space. | Upload and download time depend on your connection; storage is limited by your account or plan. |
| External storage | No | You have a large transfer, limited internet, or a suitable drive already. | The drive must be readable by both computers. Formatting erases its contents. |
| Local network sharing (SMB) | No internet upload required; both computers need the same local network. | You want to copy files directly without cloud storage or removable media. | Requires configuring file sharing and handling account credentials carefully. |
Transfer files with OneDrive
- On the Mac, sign in to OneDrive with the Microsoft account you plan to use on the Windows laptop.
- Copy or move the files you want into your OneDrive folder and let them finish syncing. Microsoft’s instructions cover uploading from a Mac and syncing files with Mac or PC: upload photos and files to OneDrive.
- On the Windows laptop, sign in to OneDrive with the same account. Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer or select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar to access the files.
- Open a few files on the laptop to confirm they are available. Keep the Mac originals until you have checked the copies.
Microsoft’s current support pages list 5 GB of OneDrive storage with a Microsoft account and 1 TB with a Microsoft 365 subscription; these are published amounts on pages accessed in 2026, not a guarantee of unchanged terms in every market or plan. Check your account’s available storage and current plan terms before relying on those amounts: OneDrive plans.

Transfer files with an external drive
- Connect a USB flash drive, SD card, external hard drive, or external SSD to the Mac. If the drive is already readable and writable on both computers, you can use it without reformatting.
- If you need to format a disk for use with both systems, Apple identifies ExFAT as Windows-compatible and recommends it for disks larger than 32 GB. Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or smaller. In Disk Utility on the Mac, select the drive and choose the erase or format option to select the format. Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it. Use a blank drive or copy its contents elsewhere first. See Apple’s Disk Utility instructions for formatting a disk for Windows.
- Copy the selected files from the Mac to the drive and wait for the copy to finish. Eject the drive safely before disconnecting it.
- Connect it to the Windows laptop, open it in File Explorer, and copy the files into the folders where you want them. Microsoft also recommends checking that files are present after copying: Move your files to a new Windows PC.
A flash drive may be enough for a modest collection; an external SSD or hard drive can be more practical for a larger one. Choose based on the amount of data you actually need to move rather than assuming a particular capacity.

Transfer files over your local network
macOS can share files with Windows users using SMB file sharing. Both computers need to be connected to the same local network. This avoids uploading files to cloud storage or carrying a drive, but it involves changing sharing settings.
- On the Mac, open System Settings and go to General > Sharing. Turn on File Sharing, then open its options and enable sharing files and folders using SMB.
- Select the account permitted to connect and note the Mac’s network address and account credentials. Apple’s current instructions show the sharing controls and the address Windows needs: Share Mac files with Windows users.
- On Windows, open File Explorer and connect to the Mac using the network address Apple provides. Enter the allowed account credentials when prompted, then copy the files to the laptop.
- When the transfer is done, turn off sharing or remove access for the account you enabled.
Apple cautions that passwords used for Windows file sharing may be stored less securely. Avoid leaving sharing enabled longer than needed, especially on a network used by other people.

Install apps separately on Windows
Apple’s Migration Assistant guidance covers moving information to a Mac, including transfers from another Mac or from a Windows PC to a Mac. It does not describe migrating Mac apps to Windows: Move content to a new Mac with Migration Assistant and Transfer your information to Mac.
For each app you need, check whether its publisher offers a Windows edition. Install that edition from the publisher or a trusted store, then follow the publisher’s directions to sign in, restore or activate your license, and import data if the app supports it. App files and app data are different: copying a Mac application bundle does not install a Windows-compatible program, and settings, plugins, fonts, licenses, or libraries should not be assumed to transfer automatically. Some Mac apps have no Windows version. The correct migration steps depend on the names of the apps involved.

Check filenames and verify the copies
A file copy to Windows can stop if a filename contains a character Windows does not permit. Apple lists these examples: < > : " / | ? *. If a transfer fails on a particular file, check its name on the Mac, rename it without those characters, and try again. Apple also notes that files beginning with a period—hidden by default in macOS—may appear in Windows. Mac metadata files can generally be left alone unless you have a specific reason to handle them. See Apple’s guidance on files that can’t be copied to a Windows computer.
