Keep the old iPhone until you have checked your photos, messages, contacts, important app data, and cellular service on the new one: setup can finish before all cloud content has downloaded.
Before you start: make a current backup
A backup gives you a recovery option if migration is interrupted or something important is missing. On the old iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, tap Back Up Now, and keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi until it finishes. Check the date and time shown beneath Back Up Now before moving on. If iCloud reports that there is not enough storage, resolve that issue before treating the backup as complete.

Apple says iCloud can back up automatically when the iPhone is connected to power and Wi-Fi and is locked. A person who has bought a new iPhone or iPad may also be eligible for temporary iCloud storage; availability is conditional, so check the prompt on the device. See Apple’s iCloud backup instructions and Apple’s transfer guidance.
- Have your Apple Account password ready.
- Make sure you can access the old phone and its backup, if your chosen method needs one.
- Prepare your SIM or eSIM. If the new iPhone needs a different SIM, Apple advises contacting your carrier.
- If using a computer backup, confirm you know its encryption password before beginning a restore.
Choose the transfer method that fits your situation

Apple describes these options in its iPhone transfer overview. Transfer time depends on network conditions and the amount of data, so there is no dependable universal time estimate.

Use Quick Start for a nearby iPhone-to-iPhone move
Quick Start is the straightforward choice when you have both phones. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPhone, unlock it, and place it near the new iPhone. Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the new device.
Choose direct transfer if you can leave both phones alone
When prompted, select the option to transfer directly from the old iPhone. Keep the phones close to each other and connected to power until the process completes. You will not be able to use the old phone normally during the transfer, and the new one is not ready until migration finishes. Follow Apple’s Quick Start steps.

Choose iCloud download if you need to use the new phone sooner
During Quick Start, choose the iCloud download option when it is offered. The new iPhone can become usable while apps and data continue downloading in the background. Keep it on Wi-Fi and power afterward; reaching the Home Screen does not mean every cloud item has arrived.

Quick Start cannot transfer data from the current device if the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. Apple also notes that transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data.

Restore from an iCloud backup
Use this route when you have a recent iCloud backup and do not need to keep the old iPhone beside the new one. During the new iPhone’s setup, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup, sign in with your Apple Account, and select the appropriate backup. Keep the new phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore and subsequent downloads proceed. Apple explains the process in its iCloud restore instructions.
If the new iPhone has already been set up, Apple’s documented restore flow requires erasing it and starting setup again. Erasing deletes the new phone’s current contents. Before doing so, make sure anything on that phone that you want to keep is saved elsewhere.

Restore a Mac or PC backup
A computer restore is useful if you already have a suitable backup in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Connect the new iPhone to the computer, open the relevant app, choose the device, and select the backup you want to restore. Check its date and size so you do not accidentally choose an older copy.

If the backup is encrypted, enter its password when asked. Keep that password available before starting: the restore requires it. An unencrypted computer backup does not include Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch. For details, use Apple’s computer-backup restore instructions.

As with an iCloud restore, Apple’s documented computer-backup restore flow requires erasing a new iPhone that has already been configured. Erasure deletes its current contents, so preserve anything on it that you need before proceeding.
Use a cable only when the model pairing calls for it
Apple documents direct wired migration for specific iPhone generation pairings. Check the exact models and ports on both phones before choosing a cable or adapter:
- iPhone 15 or later to iPhone 15 or later: USB-C Charge Cable.
- iPhone 14 or earlier to iPhone 15 or later: USB-C to Lightning Cable.
- iPhone 14 or earlier to iPhone 14 or earlier: Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, connected to power using a 12W-or-higher adapter, plus a Lightning to USB Cable.
These accessories apply to the listed wired-transfer pairings; they are not needed for Quick Start or a backup restore. Follow Apple’s wired migration instructions and on-screen steps on both devices.
Check the new iPhone before letting go of the old one
Some content, including photos, music, and apps, may continue downloading after setup. Keep the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power, then check that key items have arrived and work as expected.
- Open Photos and check recent and older items, including any albums you rely on.
- Check Messages, Contacts, and other records you cannot easily recreate.
- Open important apps and confirm you can sign in and that their critical data is present. Some apps may require their own account or restore steps; do not assume every app’s locally stored data moves automatically.
- Confirm calls and mobile data work on the new iPhone. If SIM or eSIM activation does not complete, contact your carrier; support for moving an eSIM varies by carrier.
Do not erase, trade in, or otherwise give up the old iPhone until you have checked the information you care about on the new one. Apple’s setup and restore instructions describe transfer options and follow-up downloads, not a universal guarantee that every app-specific or account-specific item will move automatically.
