Some security DVRs export selected recordings to USB, and certain older TiVo Premiere systems support network transfers to a computer. By contrast, an external drive attached to some cable DVRs may simply add storage controlled by the DVR; it does not create video files you can play on a computer.
Before buying a drive, check the DVR provider, exact model, and recording type—local or cloud. Then choose instructions for that device and the destination you actually need.

First determine what “transfer” means for your DVR
There are several distinct ways a recording can relate to an external drive. Exporting creates a copy intended for removable storage; a network transfer moves a recording to a computer; a cloud-app download saves an eligible recording for offline viewing on a supported device; storage expansion gives the DVR more space but leaves recordings under its control. These methods are not interchangeable.

- Need a computer-readable file? Look for explicit export or network-transfer support for your exact model. A USB or eSATA port alone does not establish that capability.
- Need more room for future recordings? Check whether the DVR supports an expansion drive and whether that drive is formatted and controlled by the DVR.
- Need to watch a cloud recording offline? Check whether the provider’s app allows that particular recording to be downloaded. An app download is not necessarily a file export to a hard drive.
Support varies by provider and model. The examples below are device-specific, not universal DVR instructions.

Check your DVR before choosing a drive
- Find the provider and exact DVR make and model. Check the label on the box or its settings and support information.
- Identify the recording source: recordings stored on the DVR itself and cloud DVR recordings can have different transfer options.
- Look for documented support for USB export, network transfer, or storage expansion. Confirm the required port, supported drive format, and capacity for that model.
- Decide where the recording must end up: removable media, a computer, an offline mobile device, or simply more DVR storage.
If the model’s documentation does not describe exporting or transferring recordings, do not assume that connecting a drive will make the recordings portable.
What the documented methods can do
USB export on a compatible security DVR
The Swann security DVR manual reviewed describes exporting selected recordings to USB storage. For the DVR family covered by that manual, the drive or flash drive must be formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. The procedure is to connect the storage, search for recordings, select the desired items, and choose Export. Wait for the “Export finished” message before removing the device. Consult the manual for your exact unit; this example does not show that a television-provider DVR supports USB export. Swann DVR manual

Network transfer from certain TiVo Premiere DVRs
An older TiVo installation guide describes using TiVo Desktop to transfer recorded programs from Premiere DVRs to a PC over the home network. Availability can depend on cable-provider flags and digital-rights protections, so some channels or titles may not transfer. This is model- and rights-dependent historical guidance, not a general procedure for current TiVo devices or cable and satellite boxes. TiVo installation guide
Cloud DVR downloads in the Xfinity Stream app
Xfinity describes downloading eligible completed cloud DVR recordings through the Xfinity Stream app on Apple or Android devices. The service requires cloud DVR and an active internet connection, and Xfinity says not all recordings are available. Its instructions describe limits of up to five mobile devices—or two on select packages—and up to 50 downloads per device. A download is checked out to a device; it cannot be viewed on other devices until checked back in. This is an offline-viewing option, not evidence of a general export to an external hard drive. eSATA expansion on certain legacy Xfinity DVRs
Xfinity documents external-drive support for named legacy Motorola and Cisco/Scientific Atlanta DVR models with eSATA. Its support page lists capacities up to 2 TB for certain Motorola models and up to 1 TB for the listed Cisco/Scientific Atlanta models. Xfinity says external hard drives are not available with X1 TV Boxes. Check the model and port before buying a drive. Xfinity legacy DVR storage support
For a compatible legacy box, Xfinity says to connect the drive to the eSATA port and follow the on-screen formatting prompts. The DVR includes recordings on that drive in its normal recordings list and uses available space to decide where to record. This is DVR-controlled storage, not a portable archive: Xfinity says a drive formatted by one DVR cannot be used to watch recordings on a computer or another DVR. Connecting it to another DVR prompts a reformat that erases its recordings. Do not disconnect or repurpose a drive while you still need what is stored on it. Xfinity external-drive FAQs

Protect recordings before exchanging or returning a DVR
Check where each recording is stored before you return, replace, or disconnect equipment. Xfinity says locally stored recordings are lost when a legacy TV Box is exchanged. On X1, recordings that are not available in the cloud may be lost; recordings visible in the Stream app are accessible on replacement X1 equipment. Check the app and ask the provider about retention before returning the original box. Xfinity equipment-exchange guidance
Why a drive may not work as an archive
A DVR may require a particular interface, capacity, or file system, and it may format a connected drive for its own use. Even when the DVR recognizes the drive, that does not mean a computer can read the recordings. For example, Xfinity’s documented legacy eSATA drive is managed by the DVR and cannot be used to watch recordings on a computer or a different DVR. Confirm the documented purpose of the port and drive before connecting or formatting anything.

There is no one set of steps that applies to every cable, satellite, streaming, or security DVR. If the manual only describes storage expansion, treat it as added DVR capacity—not as a recording export. Do not assume that an HDMI connection or a generic USB drive provides a supported way to copy protected recordings.
