Chrome’s screenshot API captures the visible area of a tab, not an entire long page. A full-page screenshot extension therefore has to do more than call the API once: it needs a way to capture the page in sections and assemble the result, while respecting Chrome’s permissions and capture-rate limit. That gap between a viewport image and a continuous page image is where the engineering challenge begins.
What Chrome’s screenshot API actually captures
Chrome’s tabs API reference describes captureVisibleTab as capturing “the visible area of the currently active tab in the specified window.” The method returns a promise containing a data URL for an image of that visible area. It does not, by itself, return a page-height image.

That distinction matters on a long page. A viewport capture shows only the portion currently on screen. To produce a single tall image, an extension needs an additional capture strategy, such as moving through sections of the page and combining their images. That stitching approach follows from the API’s visible-area scope; it is not a built-in full-page mode documented by Chrome.
Why capturing a long page is more than repeating a call
A basic capture loop has to coordinate page position, image capture, and assembly. The final image depends on how those parts work together: a section must be captured at the intended position, and adjacent sections must join into a coherent output. Merely collecting several viewport images does not guarantee that they will form a continuous, accurate representation of the page.

Web pages can also change as they are viewed or scrolled. For example, an implementation may need to account for content that appears on demand, fixed or sticky interface elements, animation, or areas that scroll independently. These are plausible page-specific engineering concerns, not issues that Chrome’s API documentation establishes as universal failures. Whether any one of them affects a particular extension depends on its implementation and the pages tested.
There is also a platform constraint on capture cadence. Chrome calls captureVisibleTab expensive and documents a maximum of two calls per second, a limit introduced in Chrome 92. A capture loop must account for that ceiling rather than assuming it can request images as quickly as it can move through the page. The limit is a browser API constraint, not a measure of how long a complete screenshot will take.
Choosing how the extension gets access
Chrome requires an extension to have either the all_urls or activeTab permission to call captureVisibleTab, according to the API reference. The choice affects the extension’s access model:

With activeTab, the user’s invocation is central to the permission model. It does not make every browser surface capturable: Chrome identifies restricted pages such as chrome:// pages as outside ordinary activeTab access. File URLs also require file access to be enabled. MDN’s reference for tabs.captureVisibleTab(), modified July 17, 2025, likewise describes the visible-area image and notes the file-access condition for file URLs.
What to check when a full-page capture is incomplete
A failed or unexpected result does not automatically mean the capture API is broken. Separate access problems from capture and page-rendering problems:

- No image or a permission error: Check whether the extension has
activeTaborall_urls, and whether the user invoked it when temporary access is expected. - The target is browser UI: A restricted page such as
chrome://is not an ordinary web page available throughactiveTab. - The target is a file URL: Confirm that file access is enabled for the extension.
- The output covers only what was on screen: That is the documented scope of a single
captureVisibleTabcall; a full-page result requires additional capture and assembly logic. - The output is discontinuous or differs from the page: Check the extension’s scrolling, timing, and stitching behavior against the specific page. The API documentation does not establish that every page renders consistently during a multi-part capture.
- Captures are requested too quickly: Keep calls within Chrome’s documented maximum of two per second.
What a full-page extension can—and cannot—promise
The documented API provides a way to capture the active tab’s visible area, subject to permissions and browser limits. It does not establish that an extension can produce a perfect, continuous image on every site. Page behavior and extension implementation both matter, and restricted browser pages fall outside ordinary access. Claims about reliability on particular sites need to be based on testing those sites, not inferred from the API documentation alone.
