How to Move Copilot to the System Tray in Windows 10 and 11

You cannot normally drag Copilot’s taskbar button into the tray. Use the current native Copilot app, launch it, open quick view from the notification area or with Alt + Space, and unpin the taskbar shortcut if needed.

You generally cannot drag Copilot’s ordinary taskbar button into the Windows notification area. To get tray access, install or update the current native Microsoft Copilot app, launch it, and use its system-tray quick view. You can then unpin the separate taskbar shortcut if you want Copilot off the main taskbar.

Taskbar, system tray and quick view are different

The taskbar is the main strip containing Start, Search, pinned apps and open windows. The system tray (notification area) is beside the clock, where Windows shows network, sound, battery, notifications and background-app icons. Copilot’s quick view is a compact, movable and resizable window opened from its tray icon or with Alt + Space.

Those terms matter because “move Copilot to the tray” can mean removing its taskbar button, keeping the app available in the background, or opening a small floating panel. The current consumer Copilot app supports tray-based quick view; these are not the same as manually relocating a normal taskbar button.

Identify your Copilot before changing anything

Product or interface What it is Tray guidance
Microsoft Copilot for Windows The current consumer Windows app. Its native app can register a Copilot icon in the system tray and provide quick view.
Microsoft 365 Copilot A separate work and productivity app for Microsoft 365 accounts. Microsoft documents taskbar access and administrative pinning, not the consumer app’s tray quick view. See Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Copilot guide.
Older Copilot in Windows An integrated Windows 11 experience used in earlier releases and Insider builds. Its placement and controls changed over time; it is not the same as the current native app.
Copilot in Edge or a browser-installed web app Web access presented through a browser. It does not automatically provide the native Windows tray quick view.

Microsoft describes the consumer Windows app and Microsoft 365 Copilot as distinct experiences in its Copilot on Windows documentation.

#1 Best Overall

Put the current Copilot app in the system tray

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Search for Microsoft Copilot.
  3. Select Install, or choose Update if it is already installed.
  4. Launch Copilot from Start, Search or the Store.
  5. Look beside the clock for the Copilot icon. If it is not visible, select Show hidden icons (the upward arrow) in the notification area.
  6. Select the Copilot icon to open quick view.

Microsoft’s native-app announcement describes this tray integration for Windows 10 and Windows 11, along with the Alt + Space shortcut and a quick-view window that can be moved and resized: Microsoft’s December 10, 2024 announcement. That announcement began as an Insider rollout, so availability can still vary by app release, Windows build, region and organizational policy. Microsoft says Copilot may be preinstalled or available through the Microsoft Store on Windows: Windows 11 and Copilot information.

Microsoft cited version 1.24112.123.0 and higher for that original rollout. Treat it as the version associated with the announcement, not a universal current minimum.

Open and use Copilot quick view

  • Select the Copilot icon in the visible or hidden notification-area icons.
  • Press Alt + Space to open or close quick view without reaching for the tray.
  • Drag the quick-view window to another position and resize it to the dimensions you prefer.
  • Use the control inside quick view to switch to the full Copilot app window when you need the larger interface.

If another program has claimed Alt + Space, the shortcut may not work as expected. The tray icon remains the fallback when it is available.

Remove the duplicate Copilot taskbar button

  1. Right-click Copilot’s taskbar icon.
  2. Select Unpin from taskbar.

Unpinning removes the shortcut from the main taskbar; it does not uninstall Copilot or necessarily remove its tray registration. If Copilot is not currently open, check Settings > Personalization > Taskbar for the available taskbar controls on your build. Windows’ taskbar options vary between versions and Copilot implementations; see Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance.

Show a hidden tray icon

  1. Select the Show hidden icons arrow beside the clock.
  2. If Windows allows it, drag Copilot from the overflow panel into the visible notification area.
  3. If Copilot is absent, launch the app and check again.
  4. Make sure you minimized Copilot rather than exiting it completely; some builds remove the tray presence after a full quit.

Whether an icon can be repositioned from overflow depends on the Windows build and taskbar configuration, so this drag operation is not guaranteed.

If Copilot’s tray icon does not appear

  1. Confirm the app. Microsoft 365 Copilot, Edge Copilot and a browser web app do not imply that the consumer Windows app’s tray feature is installed.
  2. Update through the Store. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and install any Copilot update. The native tray experience arrived through an app update.
  3. Launch Copilot first. The icon may not register until the app has started.
  4. Check both icon locations. Inspect the visible notification area and its hidden-icons panel.
  5. Restart Copilot. Close it completely, relaunch it and check again. Restart Windows if necessary.
  6. Check the build and rollout. Older screenshots may show the former integrated Windows Copilot or an Insider-only layout. Menu names and availability can differ on retail Windows.
  7. Check managed-device restrictions. Work or school administrators can control Copilot availability, installation and taskbar pinning. Microsoft’s managed Microsoft 365 guidance is at Pin Microsoft 365 Copilot to the taskbar.

Autostart, background operation and privacy

A tray icon after you launch Copilot is different from starting Copilot automatically with Windows. A later Windows Insider document references an Auto start on log in toggle in newer Copilot settings: Microsoft’s Insider announcement. If your Copilot build includes that option, enable it in Copilot settings. If it is missing, your release or Windows build may not support automatic startup.

For minimal background activity, leave autostart disabled and open Copilot manually. A tray icon does not by itself establish that Copilot is continuously listening; it indicates that the app has registered a tray interface. Account requirements, regional availability and organization policy can still affect what the app can do. Microsoft documents consumer/work-account distinctions in its Windows Copilot management guidance.

Why older guides show a different Copilot location

In Windows 11 Insider Build 26040, Microsoft documented moving the older integrated Copilot icon to the right side of the taskbar’s system-tray area. That change also affected the far-right Show Desktop behavior: Build 26040 announcement. It was an Insider change to an older Windows-integrated experience, not a universal command for moving today’s consumer app. Likewise, changing the position of the entire taskbar does not move Copilot specifically into the tray; Microsoft’s newer taskbar-position work is documented separately at this Windows Insider post.

Choose the simplest approach for your goal

Goal Recommended approach Trade-off
Keep Copilot off the main taskbar Use the native app’s tray icon, then unpin Copilot. The icon may remain inside hidden icons.
Open Copilot quickly Use Alt + Space. Requires the current quick-view behavior and an available shortcut.
Keep a compact panel handy Open quick view and move or resize it. It remains a normal floating window, not the old docked sidebar.
Use Copilot occasionally Leave it unpinned and launch it from Start or Windows Search. No persistent tray access.
Manage a business PC Use Microsoft 365 and device-management controls where applicable. Requires the appropriate administrator permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drag Copilot from the taskbar into the system tray?

Usually not. Windows treats taskbar buttons and notification-area icons as different interfaces. Use the native Copilot app’s tray registration instead.

Why is Copilot still on the taskbar after I enabled the tray icon?

The tray icon and taskbar shortcut are separate. Right-click the taskbar button and select Unpin from taskbar.

Does the tray method work on Windows 10?

Microsoft’s native-app announcement describes the tray quick view for both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but app version, rollout, region and policy can affect availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Copilot start automatically with Windows?

Only if your installed release exposes an Auto start on log in setting. Otherwise launch Copilot manually; that setting is build-dependent.

Is Microsoft 365 Copilot the same as consumer Copilot?

No. Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate work/productivity experience with different account and deployment controls, and its documented taskbar pinning is not proof of consumer tray quick view.

Can I disable or remove Copilot?

You can unpin its taskbar entry and, where Windows permits, uninstall the consumer app. Managed PCs may restrict removal or reinstallation.

Does a tray icon mean Copilot is always listening?

No. The icon shows that the app has a tray interface or is running according to that build; it does not by itself prove continuous audio monitoring.
