To move Bitcoin safely, first establish whether you can still use the old wallet. If it opens, create a receiving address in a verified destination wallet and send an on-chain transaction—ideally a small test first. If it will not open, recovery depends on having the correct recovery phrase or backup and using wallet software compatible with the original wallet’s setup. Never share a recovery phrase or private key: anyone who gets it may be able to spend the funds.
First identify who controls the wallet
A phone or computer is not what owns the bitcoin. The ability to spend it comes from the private keys. A recovery phrase or wallet backup may restore those keys, but the format and configuration must match the original wallet.

- Self-custody wallet: You control the keys, so you are responsible for access and backups. The device may be replaceable if you have the right recovery material and compatible software.
- Exchange or other custodial account: The provider controls the keys. Sign in to the account and use its withdrawal process; protect the account with its security controls. You cannot restore the provider’s wallet by importing a phrase from your own wallet. Bitcoin.org explains the trade-off between provider reliance and responsibility for self-custody at Some things you need to know.
Do not post a phrase, private key, wallet file, or password in a forum or send it to someone claiming to help. Bitcoin.org warns that “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask you for your seed phrase or private key” in its Avoid Scams guidance.
Choose the route that matches your situation
| Situation | What to do | Main risks to check |
|---|---|---|
| The old wallet opens and can send | Create a receive address in the destination wallet, verify it, then send an on-chain transaction. | Wrong or incompatible address, address-substitution tricks, fee and confirmation delay. |
| The old wallet will not open, but you have its recovery material | Use the destination wallet’s official restoration instructions only if it supports the original wallet’s configuration. | Wrong wallet format, derivation settings, passphrase, address type, or multisignature setup; exposing the phrase. |
| The old wallet will not open and you lack the required keys or backup | Check the original wallet’s documented recovery options. For self-custody, funds may be permanently inaccessible without the required secrets. | Scams promising recovery in exchange for the phrase, private key, or an upfront payment. |
If the old wallet still opens, send to a verified address
- Open or install the destination wallet from its verified official source. Create a new receiving address and confirm the wallet can receive from the old wallet’s address or script type. Wallet compatibility varies; some older wallets use legacy addresses. Check the destination wallet’s current documentation and Bitcoin.org’s wallet chooser.
- Verify the complete address. Use a trusted transfer method, such as scanning the destination wallet’s QR code when available, and visually check the full address in the sending wallet before authorizing. Checking only the first or last few characters is not enough. Address-poisoning attacks can put lookalike addresses into transaction history, so do not reuse an unfamiliar historical address without verifying it.
- Consider a small test transfer. If practical, send a small amount, then check that the transaction appears in the destination wallet and confirm that the funds arrive. A test is an extra chance to catch an address or compatibility problem, not a guarantee: it adds a transaction and may add a fee.
- Send the remaining balance only after checking the result. Leave enough bitcoin in the source wallet to cover its network fee. A mistaken on-chain transfer generally cannot be reversed.
If the old wallet will not open, restore only with the right recovery material
Look for the original recovery phrase, encrypted wallet backup, hardware device, or other recovery material documented by the wallet maker. Then follow the destination wallet’s official instructions, and proceed only if it supports the original wallet type and setup. Depending on the wallet, relevant details can include derivation settings, address type, an additional passphrase, or a multisignature arrangement. A recovery phrase is not a universal import code that behaves identically in every wallet.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If a restored wallet appears empty, stop before trying random settings or entering the phrase into a recovery website. A wrong account path, passphrase, or wallet configuration can make the expected balance appear absent. Consult the official documentation for the specific original and destination wallets. The general guidance in Securing your wallet explains backups, but the precise recovery screens and compatibility steps are wallet-specific.
Do not confuse a wallet password with a recovery phrase. A password may encrypt a wallet file or unlock an app; it is not necessarily the material that restores the keys. Bitcoin.org notes that forgetting an encryption password can leave very limited recovery options in its wallet security guidance.

When the phrase or keys are lost
If a self-custody wallet is inaccessible and its required keys or recovery material are lost, there may be no way to spend its bitcoin. Bitcoin.org puts it plainly: “If you permanently lose access to your wallet—for example by losing your recovery phrase—your funds are gone permanently.” It also says developers, miners, wallet providers, and exchanges cannot recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet. Treat any service asking you to disclose a phrase or private key as unsafe.

Bitcoin fees reflect transaction data size and demand for limited block space, not simply how much bitcoin you send. Bitcoin.org explains: “You pay for the size of your transaction in the block, not for the amount of bitcoin you send.” Fees are often shown in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB); 100,000,000 satoshis equal one bitcoin. A simple one-input, two-output transaction is approximately 140 virtual bytes in Bitcoin.org’s example, but transactions with more inputs or outputs can be larger. This is an approximate size example, not a fee quote. See Bitcoin Transaction Fees Today – Live Fee Rates for the fee explanation and current estimator.

- Check the sending wallet’s current fee estimate and the controls it offers. A lower fee can mean a longer wait for confirmation.
- Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), which can allow an unconfirmed transaction’s fee to be increased. Check that wallet’s documentation and transaction status before attempting a replacement.
- An unconfirmed transaction may later confirm or be dropped; if it is dropped, the funds remain spendable because the transaction did not leave the wallet. This is not a guarantee of how a particular wallet will handle the status or recovery flow.
- Bitcoin.org says a new block is added roughly every 10 minutes on average. That average is not a promise that your transaction will confirm within a particular time.
Protect access and privacy after the move
- Keep recovery phrases and private keys offline and private. Anyone who obtains them may be able to spend the bitcoin.
- Protect backups against theft, damage, and a single point of failure. Bitcoin.org recommends secure locations and durable physical storage; the appropriate backup method depends on the wallet.
- A hardware wallet or a more durable physical backup medium can be an optional improvement for future storage. Buying a device cannot restore a wallet if the required keys or recovery secrets are already lost.
- Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent. Moving or combining funds can affect privacy; it does not make a wallet anonymous.
Bitcoin.org says that most modern deterministic wallets can use one recovery-phrase backup to restore past and future addresses. That general statement does not remove the need to check a specific wallet’s backup format and setup: Securing your wallet.
