Check the case, card dimensions, riser generation, side-panel clearance, airflow and display-cable space before buying anything; a universal-looking kit is not automatically compatible with your build.
What vertical GPU mounting changes
A conventional graphics card plugs directly into a horizontal motherboard PCIe slot and is held at the rear expansion slots. A vertical installation moves the card toward the side panel, so the GPU no longer reaches the motherboard slot by itself. The bracket provides the new mechanical support, while a PCIe riser cable carries the PCIe connection from the motherboard to the relocated card.

The visual result is usually the GPU cooler facing the side window instead of the floor or top of the case. That can showcase the card, but it also changes the distance between the fans and the panel and may alter airflow around the motherboard. Vertical mounting is therefore a mechanical and thermal change, not just a cosmetic rotation.

Hardware you normally need
- A case-integrated vertical position, a case-specific accessory, or an aftermarket vertical GPU bracket.
- A PCIe riser cable when the bracket places the card away from the motherboard slot. Some kits include the riser; others sell it separately.
- The bracket’s screws, standoffs or slot hardware, installed exactly as its manual specifies.
- An anti-sag support if the mount or card needs additional support. This is useful for heavy cards but is not mandatory for every build.
- A straight, angled or low-profile HDMI or DisplayPort cable if the connector sits close to the side panel.
Compatibility checks before you buy
Measure the complete installation rather than relying on a product description that says “universal.” The case, bracket, riser and graphics card must all agree on physical dimensions and PCIe signaling.

1. Identify the case mounting method
Read the case manual and determine which of these applies:
- Integrated vertical bracket: Some cases include a rotating or dedicated PCIe bracket. Corsair’s FRAME 4000D, for example, uses a rotatable PCIe bracket; you still need to verify the required riser and the space available for your particular card.
- Case-specific add-on: An accessory may be drilled and sized for only a short list of chassis. Sharkoon’s VGCK 4.0 lists named compatible cases, so the exact model revision matters.
- Aftermarket multi-case bracket: These mounts occupy or replace several rear expansion slots. Confirm that the slot pattern, screw locations and internal depth match your case.
- Printed or custom mount: A case maker may publish files instead of a finished part. Corsair’s AIR 5400 material, for instance, provides two printed-mount lengths and requires you to produce the part before installation.
2. Check GPU thickness, length and cooler shape
Look up the card’s slot thickness and total length, then compare those measurements with the bracket specification and the distance to the side panel. A three- or four-slot cooler can occupy more space than the bracket allows. ARCTIC’s installation guidance specifically warns that an oversized cooler can intrude into the CPU-cooler area. Measure the card with its backplate, power connectors and any support hardware installed.
Do not measure only the empty bracket. Account for the motherboard edge, memory modules, CPU cooler, radiator, front fans and bottom fans. An adjustable bracket can move the card farther from the glass, but adjustment range cannot compensate for a case that is simply too narrow.

Match the riser generation to the GPU and motherboard whenever possible. A lower-generation riser can limit the negotiated link or force a manual slot-speed setting. Corsair notes that a Gen 4 riser used with a Gen 5 graphics card and Gen 5 motherboard can restrict graphics-card performance. Fractal’s Flex B-20 uses a Gen 3 riser and recommends selecting Gen 3 for the slot in BIOS or UEFI when it is paired with Gen 4 or Gen 5 components for best stability.

Check whether your motherboard exposes a per-slot setting such as PCIe Link Speed, PCIEX16 Link Speed or PCIe Generation. The exact label and menu location vary by firmware. If the system is unstable on automatic negotiation, set the slot to the riser’s generation rather than guessing at a different value.
4. Confirm side-panel and connector clearance
With the card vertical, the cooler may sit only a few millimeters from tempered glass or an acrylic panel. That can restrict intake air and make the fans recirculate warm air. Also check the space behind the card’s display outputs. Corsair notes that its shorter printed AIR 5400 mount may require a low-profile or angled HDMI or DisplayPort cable, while the longer version leaves more room for a standard straight connector.
5. Check support and adjustment features
Heavy cards can sag if the bracket has no lower support. Lian Li describes adjustable anti-sag support and positioning on its VG4v4. Verify whether the support is included, whether it contacts the card without pressing on fans or the backplate, and whether the final position still leaves room for power cables.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Exact case model and revision are listed as compatible.
- Bracket uses the case’s available rear slots and screw points.
- GPU thickness, length and height fit with the side panel installed.
- Riser generation is appropriate for the GPU and motherboard.
- Motherboard has a practical route from the PCIe slot to the bracket.
- GPU power plugs can bend without pressing against glass or fans.
- Display cables can be inserted and removed after the side panel is fitted.
- Air can reach the GPU fans, and the mount does not block key case intakes.
Choose the right type of vertical mount
| Mount type | What it offers | Checks before installation |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in case bracket | Uses the position designed into the chassis; the FRAME 4000D bracket rotates. | Required riser, GPU thickness, final distance from the panel and cable clearance. |
| Case-specific add-on kit | Bracket and riser are designed for a listed set of cases; Sharkoon’s VGCK 4.0 specifies PCIe 4.0. | Exact case model, GPU dimensions and whether the included riser reaches the motherboard slot. |
| Aftermarket bracket kit | Adds a vertical position to supported cases; CableMod’s Vertical PCI-e Bracket includes a riser and bracket hardware. | Rear-slot layout, internal dimensions, riser generation and side-panel spacing. |
| Flexible multi-position kit | Lian Li’s VG4v4 lists four-slot GPU support, a PCIe 5.0 riser, adjustment and anti-sag support. | Case fit, card size, cooler clearance and airflow at each available position. |
| Printed case-specific mount | A downloadable design can provide a tailored fit; Corsair supplies two AIR 5400 mount lengths. | Printer capability, specified material and infill, bracket strength and display-cable room. |
A kit that includes a riser is usually simpler because the bracket and cable were selected as a package, but it still does not guarantee compatibility with every case or card. Confirm the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing before ordering.

How to install a vertical graphics card
Use the case manual and the mount manual together. The order below covers the common arrangement; some brackets reverse the order of a few steps.
- Shut down and prepare the system. Turn off the PC, switch off the power supply, unplug the mains cable and press the case power button once to discharge residual power. Move the case to a stable, well-lit work surface. Remove both side panels if the mount requires access to the rear slots and motherboard connector.
- Record the existing configuration. Photograph the original GPU power-cable route and note which motherboard slot is used. If you are replacing a conventional installation, remove the card by releasing the motherboard slot latch before lifting it straight out.
- Remove the rear expansion-slot covers. Take out the covers specified by the vertical bracket. Keep the screws; many mounts use the case’s original threads. Do not leave an unused opening that allows cables or dust to interfere with the card.
- Install the vertical bracket. Fit the bracket or rotate the case’s integrated PCIe frame as directed. Start every screw by hand, then tighten evenly. If the bracket offers several positions, choose one that leaves measurable space between the GPU fans and the side panel while preserving room for display and power connectors.
- Attach the riser to the bracket. Some designs screw the riser’s GPU-side connector to a carrier; others clip it into a vertical socket. Follow the supplied orientation. Avoid twisting or sharply folding the cable, and keep the connector housing away from bare metal edges.
- Connect the riser to the motherboard. Plug the motherboard end into the primary full-length PCIe slot unless the mount documentation specifies another slot. Press evenly until the connector is fully inserted. Route the cable without placing it under the motherboard, against a fan blade or across a sharp chassis edge.
- Seat the GPU in the riser. Align the card’s gold edge connector with the riser socket and press straight down with even pressure. The connector should be fully inserted; a partially seated card can produce a black screen, link errors or intermittent crashes. Do not force the card at an angle.
- Fasten the GPU to the bracket. Align the card’s rear I/O plate with the bracket openings and install all specified screws. If an anti-sag arm is supplied, adjust it until it supports the card without touching the fan blades or applying upward pressure to the PCB.
- Connect power and display cables. Attach every required GPU power plug until its latch clicks. Route the cables with a gradual bend and keep their weight off the connector. Connect HDMI or DisplayPort after confirming that the plug can be removed without pulling the card or riser. An angled or low-profile lead may be necessary when the mount is close to the panel.
- Inspect before closing the case. Check that the GPU is level, the riser is fully inserted at both ends, all bracket screws are tight, no cable touches a fan, and the side panel does not press on the cooler or power leads. Spin each accessible fan by hand to verify that nothing is rubbing.
- Boot with the panel off for the first test. Reconnect the mains cable and start the system. Confirm that the display appears, the operating system detects the expected graphics card and all GPU fans behave normally. Shut down again before making any physical adjustment.
- Refit the panels and retest. Install the side panel carefully, then run a game or GPU workload while watching temperatures and stability. If closing the panel causes a large temperature rise, move the card farther from the panel, improve intake airflow or return to horizontal mounting.
Set PCIe speed in BIOS or UEFI when required
Many systems negotiate the riser and slot speed automatically. If the machine fails to boot, loses the display signal or reports repeated PCIe errors, enter firmware setup and locate the slot-speed control. Common paths are under Advanced, Chipset, PCIe Configuration or a menu named for the primary x16 slot.
- Restart and press the motherboard’s setup key, commonly
DeleteorF2. - Open the PCIe or chipset configuration page.
- Find the setting for the slot connected to the riser, such as
PCIe x16 Link Speed. - Select the riser’s generation instead of
Autoif automatic negotiation is unreliable. For a Gen 3 riser paired with newer components, Gen 3 is the conservative setting recommended by Fractal for its Flex B-20. - Save changes, reboot and test. If the system remains unstable, power down and reseat both riser connectors before changing additional firmware settings.
Using a lower link generation can reduce the maximum interface bandwidth. Treat a manual setting as a compatibility remedy, not a performance upgrade.

In Corsair’s AIR 5400 testing, vertical mounting raised GPU temperature by 2°C to 4°C compared with the normal horizontal position. Corsair also observed that motherboard VRM, RAM and M.2 temperatures could be slightly lower because the airflow path changed. That is a case-specific 2026 result, not a prediction for every chassis or graphics card.
Ways to protect airflow
- Leave the largest practical gap between the GPU fans and the glass or acrylic panel.
- Keep front and bottom intake paths clear of loose cables and unused drive cages.
- Use the bracket’s farther-back position if the closer position blocks the cooler.
- Set a sensible GPU fan curve only after checking temperatures with the side panel installed.
- Watch hotspot and memory temperatures as well as the average GPU reading; a normal core temperature does not prove that every component is adequately cooled.
- If temperatures or noise become unacceptable, remove the riser and reinstall the card horizontally. A visible GPU is not worth throttling or instability.
Troubleshooting a vertical GPU installation
No display or the system does not detect the card
- Power off and reseat the GPU in the riser; verify that the motherboard end is fully inserted.
- Confirm that the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard video output.
- Check every GPU power connector and test with the side panel removed to eliminate cable pressure.
- Set the PCIe slot to the riser’s generation in firmware if the cable is one or more generations below the motherboard and GPU.
- Temporarily reinstall the card directly in the motherboard slot. If it works horizontally, investigate the riser, bracket alignment or firmware setting rather than the GPU itself.
Crashes, graphical corruption or intermittent link errors
Inspect the riser for a sharp fold, trapped section or strain at either connector. Re-route it with a broad curve, tighten the bracket so the socket cannot move and retest at the riser’s rated generation. A marginal connection can appear stable at idle and fail only under GPU load.
Temperatures or fan noise are higher
Measure with the panel installed and compare the result with the original orientation under the same workload. Move the card farther from the panel, improve intake flow, clean blocked filters and adjust fan curves gradually. The AIR 5400’s documented 2°C to 4°C increase illustrates why a case-specific measurement is more useful than a generic promise that vertical mounting is cooler.
The card will not fit or the panel will not close
Check the card’s true slot thickness, the bracket’s adjustment position and the clearance around power plugs. A shorter display cable may solve connector interference, but it cannot solve a cooler that physically contacts the panel. Remove the card and choose a different bracket position or a mount designed for the card’s thickness.

The card sags or the bracket flexes
Recheck all rear-slot screws and use the mount’s anti-sag support if supplied. Set the support under a structurally strong part of the card, never against a fan blade. If the bracket cannot support the card without flexing, return to horizontal mounting or use a sturdier, case-compatible bracket.
Model-specific notes to verify
Corsair FRAME 4000D
The case uses a rotatable PCIe bracket. Verify the exact riser requirement, card thickness and final display-cable path after rotating it; the bracket’s existence does not remove those checks.
Corsair AIR 5400 printed mount
The published design has two mount lengths. The shorter version can leave too little room for a straight HDMI or DisplayPort connector and may call for a low-profile or angled cable; the longer version provides more connector space. Follow the specified printing material and infill guidance and inspect the finished part for strength before supporting a heavy card.
Sharkoon VGCK 4.0
This case-specific kit lists PCIe 4.0 and named compatible chassis. Confirm that your exact case appears on the compatibility list and that the card’s dimensions fit before assuming the included hardware will work.
Lian Li VG4v4
The VG4v4 documentation lists support for four-slot GPUs, a PCIe 5.0 riser, adjustable positioning and anti-sag support. Those features help with heavy or thick cards, but the target case still has to provide the necessary slot and internal clearance.
CableMod and Cooler Master kits
Manufacturer documentation describes CableMod’s Vertical PCI-e Bracket as a bracket-and-riser package and Cooler Master’s Universal Vertical GPU Holder Kit ARGB as a vertical-holder option. Treat both as product categories to verify against your case dimensions, not as universally compatible solutions.
When horizontal mounting is the better choice
Keep the conventional orientation when the case cannot provide a safe bracket position, the riser is not compatible with your platform, the side panel leaves no airflow gap, or the mount blocks power and display connectors. Horizontal mounting also removes one additional connection—the riser—from the signal path and usually makes future GPU maintenance simpler. Vertical mounting is worthwhile when the fit is secure, temperatures remain acceptable and the visual or space benefit matters to you; it is not a requirement for reliable graphics performance.
