For gaming, 32GB is the sensible starting configuration for a Ryzen AI Max laptop. Choose 64GB when the laptop will also run memory-heavy creative applications, local AI models, virtual machines or unusually heavy multitasking. That is a buying guideline, not a measured gaming minimum: available testing does not isolate 32GB against 64GB under identical conditions.
Before ordering, check the exact laptop’s installed memory, graphics-memory allocation options and upgradeability. Ryzen AI Max systems use shared memory for their integrated graphics, so you cannot assume a separate pool of upgradeable VRAM.

Why Ryzen AI Max memory is different
AMD lists the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with LPDDR5x-8000 system memory and Radeon 8060S integrated graphics in its official specification. The Radeon graphics processor uses the laptop’s system memory rather than having a separate graphics-card memory module. AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo User Guide also describes LPDDR5x memory for the platform.
In practical terms, a laptop sold with 32GB has one shared memory pool. Windows, the game, background applications and the integrated GPU all draw from that pool. The firmware and driver can reserve or allocate memory for graphics, but there is no universal amount that is permanently “VRAM” on every Ryzen AI Max laptop. Allocation controls, firmware behavior and available capacities vary by model.

This is why a 64GB configuration does not automatically produce twice the graphics memory or twice the frame rate. It gives the whole system more headroom, while the GPU still operates within the laptop maker’s power, cooling and allocation limits.
What the available gaming test actually shows
A Notebookcheck review of a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system includes gaming benchmarks and reports 32.7GB of memory in the tested machine. That is useful evidence that a roughly 32GB configuration has been used for real game testing with Radeon 8060S graphics.
It is not a universal minimum. The review does not compare the same laptop at 32GB and 64GB with every other setting held constant, so it cannot show how many frames extra capacity adds. The game, resolution, texture settings, driver version, Windows workload, laptop power limit, cooling and memory-allocation policy can all change the result. Treat the benchmark as evidence about that particular test configuration, not as a promise for every Ryzen AI Max model.

Recommended capacity by type of use
| Primary use | Recommended capacity | What the recommendation means |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming is the main purpose | 32GB | A practical baseline supported by the existence of a 32.7GB gaming-tested system. It is not a guaranteed requirement for every game. |
| Gaming plus many browser tabs, recording, streaming or development tools | 32GB to 64GB | Choose 64GB if you regularly keep several demanding applications open while playing. The extra capacity is for system headroom, not a proven frame-rate gain. |
| Gaming plus large photo, video or 3D projects | 64GB | Large project files and creative applications can justify capacity independently of gaming. Available sources do not show that gaming alone needs it. |
| Gaming plus local AI models, virtual machines or other workstation loads | 64GB or more if the model offers it | These workloads can consume substantial shared memory. Select capacity for the non-gaming workload rather than treating it as a gaming performance specification. |
If two otherwise similar models differ only in memory, 32GB is the value-oriented gaming choice when you close heavy applications before playing. Paying for 64GB makes sense when replacing the laptop later would be more expensive than buying the headroom now, or when your normal workload already approaches 32GB.
Is 32GB enough for gaming on Ryzen AI Max?
For most buyers whose priority is playing games, 32GB is the reasonable starting point. It leaves considerably more room for the operating system, the game, shader caches, launchers and ordinary background software than lower-capacity configurations, while matching the class of system used in the published Ryzen AI Max+ 395 gaming review.
“Enough” still depends on what you run at the same time. A game with high-resolution assets, a browser full of tabs, a screen recorder, a voice application and a development environment can approach the limit sooner than the game by itself. When physical memory is exhausted, the operating system moves data to storage; that can show up as hitching, longer load times or application errors even when average frame rate looks acceptable.

Do not read the 32GB recommendation as a promise that every future title will fit, or as proof that a particular graphics preset has a fixed memory requirement. Game patches and texture packs change usage, and the integrated GPU’s share is taken from the same pool. Check benchmarks for the exact laptop and the games and settings you care about whenever those results are available.

There is no controlled 32GB-versus-64GB result in the cited material that demonstrates a frame-rate improvement on Ryzen AI Max. If a game and your background workload already fit comfortably in 32GB, moving to 64GB should not be expected to double performance or create a predictable average-fps increase.
64GB can still improve the experience indirectly. It reduces the chance that simultaneous recording, streaming, browser tabs, large mods, compilers, virtual machines or creative applications force paging to storage. It also gives the shared GPU a larger total pool from which the platform can allocate memory, although the actual allocation and any resulting benefit depend on the laptop’s firmware, driver and power limits. No fixed graphics-memory amount should be assumed across models.

What to compare when choosing between two Ryzen AI Max laptops
Memory capacity is only one part of a fair comparison. Record the following for each exact model and configuration:
Recommended Free Tools
- Installed capacity: Confirm whether the listing says 32GB, 64GB or another amount, and whether the figure is usable capacity or a rounded marketing label.
- Upgradeability: LPDDR5x is commonly integrated into the motherboard, but the processor specification is not a service manual for every laptop. Look for the manufacturer’s maintenance documentation or an explicit statement that memory is soldered or replaceable.
- Power and cooling: Two laptops with the same Ryzen AI Max processor can enforce different sustained power limits and thermal policies. Those differences may matter more to frame rate than additional capacity once 32GB is sufficient.
- Graphics-memory allocation: Check whether the firmware exposes an adjustable UMA or graphics-memory setting and what the default is. A larger system-memory number does not reveal the setting used in a benchmark.
- Target games, resolution and settings: Compare results at the resolution, ray-tracing mode, texture quality and upscaling mode you intend to use. A result from another configuration is not directly transferable.
- Price: Compare the complete laptop, not the memory line alone. A 64GB model may also include a different display, cooling system, storage device or power adapter.
| Comparison question | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Does the exact model have 32GB or 64GB? | Determines available headroom for the game and everything else running. | Manufacturer specification and the exact retailer configuration. |
| Can memory be upgraded? | You may not be able to add capacity later. | Service manual, product support page or a direct manufacturer statement. |
| What power and cooling limits are used? | They influence sustained GPU and CPU performance. | Independent testing of the same chassis and power mode. |
| Which allocation and test conditions were used? | Shared memory results are sensitive to firmware and settings. | Benchmark notes for graphics allocation, drivers, resolution and quality. |
How to check a laptop before buying
- Open the exact product page. Do not rely on a family name such as “Ryzen AI Max.” Confirm the processor, installed memory and storage for the specific SKU.
- Find the memory construction. Search the manufacturer’s specifications and service documentation for terms such as soldered LPDDR5x, onboard memory, or user-replaceable modules. If the documentation is silent, treat future upgrades as unconfirmed.
- Check graphics settings in reviews or firmware documentation. Look for the UMA-frame-buffer or graphics-memory option and note whether a reviewer changed it. Avoid comparing a benchmark with an unknown allocation to one with a known allocation as if they were equivalent.
- Match the review to your workload. A benchmark should identify the same laptop chassis, power mode, drivers, resolution and game settings. Processor branding alone is not enough.
- Decide from your normal multitasking pattern. If you close everything except the game, 32GB is the practical baseline. If you routinely keep demanding applications open, select 64GB when the price and model availability are acceptable.
- Keep purchase evidence. Save the configuration page or invoice showing the memory amount. Laptop listings can contain several capacities under one product title.
Shared memory, allocation and common misconceptions
There is no separate VRAM upgrade implied by the specification
Radeon 8060S is integrated graphics. The platform’s memory specification describes system LPDDR5x, not a discrete graphics card with its own replaceable VRAM. Installing a generic RAM kit or buying a separate VRAM module is therefore not an established solution for these laptops. Whether any system memory can be replaced depends on the exact machine.

A larger allocation is not always faster
Giving the GPU a larger reserved area can leave less immediately available to Windows and applications. The best setting depends on the game and the firmware’s memory-management design. Change allocation only when the laptop maker documents the option or a reliable test for that exact model explains the trade-off.
Memory speed and memory capacity are different specifications
LPDDR5x-8000 describes the platform’s memory-speed class in AMD’s processor specification. It is not a statistic showing how many frames a game gains, nor does it establish that 32GB or 64GB is required.
Symptoms that you need more capacity
Consider moving from a 32GB model to a 64GB model when your actual use shows one or more of these patterns:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Games stutter or take much longer to switch back after you leave several large applications open.
- The operating system reports sustained high memory use and heavy paging to storage during your normal session.
- Recording, streaming, compiling, virtual machines or creative software regularly fail or become unresponsive while a game is running.
- You routinely work with large local AI models or project files and have no practical way to close those workloads before gaming.
These signs identify a capacity problem only after you rule out other causes such as thermal throttling, outdated drivers, storage pressure or a game-specific bug. Extra memory cannot repair a cooling limitation or an underpowered laptop configuration.
A simple buying decision
- Gaming only or gaming first: Start at 32GB, then compare the exact laptop’s cooling, power mode and game benchmarks.
- Gaming plus heavy multitasking: Prefer 64GB if the workload commonly remains open during play.
- Workstation or local-AI use: Size memory for those applications first; their requirements are separate from a gaming recommendation.
- Unclear upgrade path: Buy the capacity you expect to need for the laptop’s useful life, because integrated LPDDR5x may not be replaceable.
The key distinction is between capacity headroom and gaming performance. The evidence supports 32GB as a practical gaming baseline and 64GB as insurance for demanding combined workloads, but it does not provide a universal capacity threshold or a measured frame-rate advantage for 64GB.
