How to Monitor Website Visual Changes with Make and Slack

Make can compare fetched website content and alert Slack, but pixel-level visual monitoring needs a separate rendered screenshot comparison workflow.

You can use Make to check a website on a schedule and send a Slack alert when its content changes. Make’s published template retrieves page content, compares it with a stored snapshot, and summarizes meaningful changes; it does not establish pixel-by-pixel screenshot comparison. If you need to detect visual layout changes, build a separate workflow that captures and compares rendered screenshots.

What Make’s website-change template actually monitors

Make’s Website Change Monitor and Alert template connects Bright Data Web Unlocker, Claude, Airtable, and Slack. It retrieves page content, keeps snapshots and timestamps in Airtable, summarizes changes, and sends an alert. The template recommends checking every 24 hours; that is its suggested schedule, not a universal interval or a measured performance guarantee.

This is content-change monitoring, not proof of visual comparison. A change in returned HTML or text may be meaningful even if the page looks the same, while a layout change caused by CSS may not alter the content being compared. A screenshot capture is also not a screenshot comparison: Make lists a URL screenshot action, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a turnkey screenshot-diff module.

Choose the kind of change you need to detect

Approach What it can detect JavaScript rendering Main trade-offs
HTTP/content comparison Changes in the response body or selected text after filtering noise. An ordinary HTTP request may not include content rendered later in a browser. Efficient for stable text and structured content; needs baseline storage and noise filtering.
Rendered-page screenshot comparison Changes in the captured page’s appearance, such as layout, styling, or visible content. Use a browser-based capture that waits for the page to render. Requires consistent viewport, wait conditions, and image comparison; dynamic content can create noisy differences.

Make’s HTML/CSS to Image and HTTP integration documents a URL screenshot action. That establishes a way to capture an image, not a documented pixel-diff workflow. For layout monitoring, add or connect a service that stores comparable captures and detects image differences, or implement the comparison yourself.

Build a Make-to-Slack content monitor

1. Set the scope and schedule

List the URLs to watch and decide how quickly an alert matters. Use Make’s daily recommendation as a starting point only if a 24-hour delay is acceptable. Pages that change often or require faster response may need a different schedule and more frequent checks.

2. Fetch each page

Use Make’s HTTP app to make an HTTPS request. A GET retrieves the response body; a HEAD request retrieves status and headers without the body, and some servers may not support HEAD. See the Make HTTP app documentation for its modules and request setup.

An ordinary HTTP fetch observes what the server returns to that request. It may miss content added by browser-side JavaScript or fail on sites that resist automated requests. The published template uses Bright Data Web Unlocker for retrieval, so reproducing that exact approach requires a Bright Data account and configured Web Unlocker zone. Treat it as an external dependency, not a built-in Make browser.

3. Save a baseline before alerting

Keep the previous observation and its timestamp for each URL. The template uses Airtable to store the URL list, snapshots, and change history. On a URL’s first successful check, save the result as its baseline and do not send a change alert: there is no earlier state to compare.

4. Compare relevant content and filter noise

Compare the new observation with the stored baseline, then remove predictable or irrelevant differences such as timestamps, build identifiers, and incidental HTML structure. Pass the meaningful delta to Claude for a concise summary, as the template describes, and store the new snapshot and summary in Airtable. Summarization does not itself verify layout or establish that a screenshot was compared.

For a screenshot workflow, keep the capture conditions consistent between runs: viewport, device scale, page state, and wait conditions. Exclude or mask regions that change routinely, such as rotating promotions or live counters, and compare the resulting images with a dedicated image-diff step. These are implementation requirements for meaningful visual comparison, not capabilities established for Make’s template.

5. Send a useful Slack alert

Use Make’s Slack integration to send an alert only after a meaningful change. Include the page URL, check time, short summary, and a link to the stored snapshot or comparison so the recipient can verify the evidence. Keep fetch failures and scenario errors on a separate alert path; a failed check must not be reported as “no change.” Make documents the HTTP and Slack integration, while Slack connection setup can depend on workspace permissions and administrator policies.

Make dependencies and operational limits

  • The published template lists accounts or credentials for Make, Airtable, Bright Data with a Web Unlocker zone, Anthropic API access, and a Slack workspace.
  • Make webhook logs are retained for 3 days, or 30 days for Enterprise, according to the undated Make Webhooks Help Center documentation. This concerns webhook logs, not necessarily scenario history or records held in Airtable.
  • The same documentation lists a limit of 300 incoming webhook requests per 10-second interval. This is a platform limit, not an appropriate monitoring cadence.
  • Webhook delivery is queued and can involve retry and error behavior. If webhooks carry results or alerts, design explicit error handling and consult the current documentation rather than treating the webhook log as permanent evidence.

Troubleshooting missed or noisy alerts

The first run sends an alert

Check whether the workflow treats a missing previous snapshot as a change. Initialize the baseline without notifying, then compare only subsequent successful observations.

The page looks different but no content change is found

The monitor may be comparing HTTP response content rather than a rendered browser view. Use a rendered capture and actual image-diff step for layout changes; a URL screenshot action alone only produces a capture.

The page changes in a browser but not in the HTTP response

The content may be inserted by JavaScript after the initial response. Use a rendering-capable retrieval path, such as the template’s Bright Data Web Unlocker setup where appropriate, and verify that the captured state includes the content you intend to monitor.

Slack receives alerts on every run

Inspect the stored baseline and comparison output. Normalize predictable timestamps, rotating content, and irrelevant markup before deciding whether a change is meaningful. For screenshots, stabilize viewport and wait conditions and mask regions that are expected to vary.

No Slack message arrives

Check Make’s scenario execution and error path first, then confirm the Slack connection remains authorized and that the workspace permits the required app access. Workspace-owner policies may restrict setup.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot can provide visual evidence for a separate comparison workflow, but capturing an image alone does not create a before-and-after diff.

One GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners and consent dialogs, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are handled before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
