HTML/CSS to Image can turn a public webpage into a screenshot, but the recurring schedule and visual-change detection are separate parts of the workflow. Use an external scheduler or automation to request captures, save each image with a timestamp, then inspect the archive or connect a separate image-comparison step. Its reviewed documentation describes capture and automation integrations, but does not establish a built-in recurring scheduler or visual-difference alerts.
What recurring captures can—and cannot—do
HTML/CSS to Image describes competitive monitoring as a use case: “Automatically capture competitor websites to track design changes over time.” That is the vendor’s description of the use case, not proof of a particular alerting or comparison feature. The documented API’s job is to create an image from a URL; a separate workflow must trigger it repeatedly and decide what to do with the results. See the webpage screenshot documentation and the API documentation.

- Capture: request an image of a public webpage.
- Schedule: run that request at the intervals you choose using an external scheduler or workflow service.
- Archive: retain images with enough information to identify their URL, configuration, and capture time.
- Detect changes: review the images yourself or add a separate comparison system. The reviewed documentation does not establish native visual-difference alerts.
Set up a repeatable capture
1. Define what should count as a change
Choose whether you want to monitor the whole page, the full scrollable page, or one region such as a price, headline, or product panel. Decide which screen size and rendering state matter. A page-wide capture can reveal layout changes; a selector crop can reduce unrelated visual noise when the region stays stable.

2. Make a test API request
The documented URL capture uses a POST request to https://hcti.io/v1/image, with API ID and key authentication and a url value. Consult the API parameters and usage guide for the current authentication format and request fields. For example, the request shape is:

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
curl -X POST "https://hcti.io/v1/image"
-u "YOUR_API_ID:YOUR_API_KEY"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"url":"https://example.com"}'
Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to capture. The documentation describes URL capture for public webpages; some sites block automated access. Use the exact body and authentication format shown in the current API guide for your account and chosen options.
3. Keep capture settings stable
For useful comparisons, use the same URL and rendering configuration on every run. This consistency is implementation advice based on the API’s documented capture controls, not an automatic guarantee that two images will be identical when the site itself changes its content.
- Viewport: if you set dimensions, specify both width and height and keep them unchanged between runs.
- Coverage: choose viewport, full-page, or a CSS selector crop and keep that choice fixed.
- Rendering delay: add a delay when JavaScript-driven content is missing from an early capture. The API exposes delay controls; the Zapier guide also recommends increasing
ms_delaywhen a dynamic page appears blank. - Color and device: keep mobile emulation and color scheme consistent if the API settings you use expose them.
The API guide covers capture parameters. A selector is useful only if it continues to identify the intended region; if the site changes its markup, the crop may fail or target the wrong element.

4. Add an external recurring trigger
Schedule a workflow, job, or other external process to call the URL-capture action at your chosen interval. HTML/CSS to Image documents integrations for n8n, Zapier, and Make. The reviewed documentation does not identify a built-in recurring timer inside the service, so configure the schedule in the automation system rather than assuming the screenshot API supplies one.
- n8n integration: documents a “Create From URL” action and binary output that can flow to email, Slack, S3, or Google Drive.
- Zapier integration: documents URL screenshot capture and notes a 429 response when the monthly image limit has been exceeded.
- Make integration: documents an integration for URL-based screenshots.
Exact scheduler menus depend on the automation service and its current interface. In each workflow, the important sequence is: recurring trigger, URL capture action, then delivery or storage.
5. Store each result with identifying metadata
Save each image in durable storage. Include the capture time and target URL in a filename, folder structure, or accompanying metadata—for example, example-com-home-2026-10-03T1200Z.png. This naming convention is a workflow recommendation, not documented automatic behavior. The n8n integration supports URL/metadata output, binary output, or both, and describes passing binary data to storage and messaging nodes.

Choose capture settings for a fair comparison
| Decision | Use it when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | You care about the initial view at a particular screen size. | A change below the fold will not appear in the capture. |
| Full-page screenshot | You need to inspect the scrollable page, not only its first screen. | Long pages may include changing content unrelated to the section you primarily monitor. |
| CSS selector crop | A particular stable content region matters more than the whole page. | Markup changes can invalidate the selector or cause it to capture the wrong region. |
| Render delay | JavaScript content or late-loading elements are absent in an immediate capture. | Longer waits add time to each run; keep the delay consistent. |
Consent banners and third-party resources can change independently of the target design. The screenshot documentation offers consent-banner blocking, and API request overrides can block selected requests on paid plans. Be selective: blocking styles, scripts, fonts, or images that affect the target can change the page you are trying to monitor. See the screenshot documentation and API usage guide.

For occasional review, open the latest image next to a prior one. For automatic visual-change detection, add a separate diff or monitoring step unless the vendor confirms a native feature for your account. Capture storage alone does not tell you whether the page changed meaningfully.
- Manual review: appropriate when captures are infrequent or a person needs to judge whether a visual difference matters.
- Automated comparison: add an independent image-difference step when you need a machine-generated signal. Set a tolerance for small rendering variations, and review flagged images before treating them as meaningful changes.
- Content-specific monitoring: if a visual diff produces too much noise, consider whether the monitored region or a text-level check better matches the change you care about.
Access, reliability, and usage considerations
Public access and protected pages
The hosted renderer needs to reach the target page. Public URLs are the documented normal path, and some sites may block automated access. Private or login-protected pages may require configured headers or a proxy; the documentation does not establish that the service performs interactive sign-in for you. Avoid sending credentials or capturing private content unless you are authorized and have checked how your workflow handles secrets and stored images.
Failed or incomplete captures
A blank or incomplete image may mean the page had not finished rendering, a third-party resource failed, or the site blocked automated access. Dynamic pages may need a longer delay. Check the response and the rendered image before treating it as a real site change.

Usage and request limits
The API documentation describes a usage endpoint for checking consumption. Monitor usage in the same workflow or account process that operates the schedule. The Zapier guide documents a 429 response when the monthly image limit is exceeded; if that happens, review usage and the account limit, then reduce unnecessary capture frequency or adjust the plan as appropriate.
