How to Monitor Tests During Application Development

A practical workflow for monitoring tests as code changes: rerun relevant tests locally, publish CI results for shared changes, and use reports and traces to diagnose failures.

Monitor tests in two layers: run a test runner’s watch mode while you edit, then run the appropriate suite in continuous integration (CI) on pushes and pull requests so teammates can see a shared result. When a test fails, use its log and report to identify the failing case; for browser tests, inspect a trace to reconstruct what happened. Add coverage reporting when you need to see which code paths the suite exercises, but do not treat coverage as proof that the software is correct.

Build a fast local feedback loop

Start with the test command already used by the project. A watch mode can rerun relevant tests after a file changes without requiring you to launch the entire suite manually. In Jest, jest --watch runs tests related to changed files by default; jest --watchAll reruns all tests after changes. Jest also supports selecting tests related to specified files. See the Jest CLI documentation for current options.

Use the narrow, fast loop to catch regressions as you work, but run the project’s full suite before treating a change as ready. A focused run is only as complete as the runner’s ability to determine which tests relate to the changed files.

Run shared checks in CI

Local results describe one developer’s environment. CI runs configured checks against a shared change and makes the outcome visible to collaborators, commonly on a pull request or workflow page. Trigger the appropriate test command on pushes and pull requests, and preserve a report as a downloadable artifact if it will help investigate failures.

Playwright’s example GitHub Actions workflow illustrates push and pull-request triggers, dependency installation, test execution, and uploading an HTML report. Its example sets artifact retention to 30 days; that is an example configuration, not a universal retention recommendation. Action versions, workflow syntax, and retention policies can change, so check the current Playwright CI documentation and adapt the setup to your repository and test stack.

Choose scope and execution settings deliberately

  • Run the checks that give useful feedback for the change; a focused set can provide a quicker signal, while broader runs can catch interactions beyond the edited files.
  • Set a test-runner timeout that allows the process to stop a hung run and generate its report. If the CI provider also enforces a job timeout, leave enough time for the runner to finish and write outputs.
  • Parallel execution can shorten elapsed time, but shared state, resource contention, or environment differences can make failures less reproducible. Playwright recommends one worker in CI by default for stability and reproducibility, while also documenting parallel execution and sharding when the system can support them. This is Playwright-specific guidance, not a universal setting.
  • Retain reports and failure artifacts only as long as they are useful, and consider whether they contain application or test data.

Read a failure before changing code

  1. Check the overall CI status. Confirm which job and test command failed rather than assuming the application test suite is the cause.
  2. Read the test log. Locate the failing test and compare the expected result with the actual result. Note setup errors, timeouts, and environmental failures separately from assertion failures.
  3. Open the test report. An HTML report can help review suite outcomes and, where supported, filter for flaky tests or other relevant results.
  4. Inspect a browser trace when available. A trace can show the sequence of browser actions and page state around a failing test, helping distinguish a product regression from a timing or setup issue.
  5. Reproduce at the narrowest useful scope. Rerun the failing test or related tests locally, then widen the run if the cause could affect other cases.

Logs, HTML reports, and browser traces answer different questions: what ran and failed, how the suite behaved overall, and what happened during browser interactions. Playwright documents these reporting and trace options in its CI setup guide. Microsoft’s Playwright documentation says, “Playwright tests can be run on any CI provider”; each provider still needs its own configuration, and the statement does not mean every project can use an identical workflow.

Add coverage when you need to find untested code

Coverage reporting answers a different question from pass/fail monitoring: which code paths did the test run reach? It can help identify areas with little or no exercise, but a high percentage alone does not establish test quality or application correctness.

GitHub’s documented coverage workflow uses a language-specific tool to generate Cobertura XML, uploads that file, and surfaces coverage results on pull requests. Its examples include pytest with pytest-cov, JaCoCo, Istanbul/nyc, SimpleCov, and Go coverage conversion. Follow the instructions for the language and tool in your repository; the GitHub coverage documentation describes the reporting flow.

Troubleshoot missing or unreliable results

  • Watch mode does not rerun the expected test: verify that the runner can associate the changed file with a test, or use an all-tests run. In Jest, --watchAll reruns the full set.
  • A CI run hangs or ends without a useful report: configure an appropriate test-runner timeout so it can stop its run and emit output; coordinate it with the provider’s job timeout.
  • Failures appear only under parallel execution: check for shared mutable state, resource collisions, or environment-dependent behavior. Reduce concurrency to see whether the failure becomes reproducible.
  • A report or trace is unavailable: verify that the workflow generates and uploads the relevant artifact, and that its retention window has not expired.
  • Coverage appears but does not explain a failure: use the test log and report for pass/fail diagnosis; coverage measures exercised code, not why an assertion failed.

Or skip the browser setup

If the tests you are monitoring involve browser screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return a screenshot or PDF without requiring you to manage a browser capture setup. For example, save a WebP screenshot of Stripe with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners and consent overlays, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
