Chrome blocks pop-ups by default. If a trusted site needs one, allow it for that site rather than changing the default for every site. The steps differ on desktop, Android, and iPhone or iPad; pop-up controls are also separate from notification permissions.
Manage pop-ups on a computer
In Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects. Choose the default behavior there. Chrome’s setting applies broadly, so use a site exception when only one trusted site needs pop-ups. Google’s desktop instructions describe these controls.

Allow a pop-up Chrome just blocked
- Open the site and look for the blocked-pop-up indicator in Chrome’s address bar.
- Click the indicator and inspect the link or pop-up Chrome blocked.
- Choose the option to always allow pop-ups and redirects from that site.
Add, block, or remove a site exception
Return to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects. Under the not-allowed list, select Add to enter a trusted site. Google gives [*.]example.com as a pattern for a domain and its subdomains. To revoke an existing exception, find the site in the allowed list and choose Block.

In Chrome, tap More > Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects. Turn off the control that blocks pop-ups and redirects to change the default. For a narrower exception, open the page where Chrome blocked a pop-up and tap Always show when prompted. See Google’s Android instructions.

Manage pop-ups on iPhone or iPad
In Chrome, tap More > Settings > Content Settings > Block Pop-ups, then turn the control on or off. To allow a blocked pop-up for a particular site, return to the page and tap Always show beneath the blocked-pop-up message. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions cover this route.
If messages continue after changing the pop-up setting
Check notification permissions
Pop-ups and site notifications are different controls. A site may still send notifications because you previously allowed or subscribed to them. On desktop, use the site information control beside the address bar or Chrome’s site settings to review that site’s notification permission. Google discusses notifications in its Chrome pop-up guidance.

Look for signs of unwanted software
Persistent pop-up ads or new tabs, unfamiliar redirects, or Chrome settings changing without your permission can indicate unwanted software. Don’t click a suspicious pop-up that says a program needs an update or download; go to that program’s official website instead. Google’s unwanted ads and malware guidance describes these warning signs. On iPhone or iPad, if a page dialogue will not go away, Google advises turning on airplane mode, closing Chrome, and closing the affected tab; see its iPhone and iPad guidance.
Check whether Chrome is managed
On a work- or school-managed Chrome device, an administrator may control the pop-up setting, so you may not be able to change it yourself. Ask your network administrator if the control is unavailable.
