Watching is a subscription; starring a repository is not a notification setting. Pick event types such as releases, pull requests, issues, or security alerts, then set delivery in your GitHub notification settings. For workflow failures, configure Actions notifications separately.
Choose the monitoring method that fits
| Method | Best for | Coverage and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Repository Watch settings | Following activity in a few repositories | Choose broad or selected event notifications; delivery can use GitHub’s inbox, mobile, or email. |
| Actions notifications | Notices about workflow runs you triggered | Choose web or email, including an option to notify only about failed workflows. |
| REST API | Building custom monitoring automation | Requires implementation and attention to access restrictions and endpoint deprecation in the current API reference. |
Set up repository notifications
-
Open the repository you want to follow on GitHub.
-
Select Watch and choose the notification setting that fits your purpose. Use custom event selections where available to avoid receiving every repository update.

Open your account’s notification settings and choose where notifications should arrive: the GitHub web inbox, GitHub Mobile, or email. Available channels depend on your account settings.
Watching differs from starring: a star saves or signals interest in a repository, while Watch subscribes you to repository activity. GitHub describes watching as subscribing to updates for activity in that repository (GitHub Docs: Configuring notifications).
Reduce notification noise
-
Review watched repositories and remove subscriptions that are no longer useful. GitHub recommends reviewing subscriptions when notification volume becomes difficult to manage (GitHub Docs: Viewing your subscriptions).
-
Choose only the event categories that serve a clear purpose instead of watching all activity.

Unwatching a repository does not stop notifications for conversations you participate in or where you are mentioned. Manage those conversation notifications separately.
Get notified about GitHub Actions failures
Repository watch settings and workflow-run notices are separate. If you want CI status, open your GitHub account notification settings and configure Actions notifications for web or email delivery. Where offered, select the failed-workflows-only option to avoid notices for successful runs. GitHub’s setup guidance covers these options at Configuring notifications.
Use the REST API for custom monitoring
GitHub provides REST API endpoints related to watching repositories. Before building automation, distinguish endpoints for managing or viewing a repository’s watcher subscriptions from the endpoint that lists repositories watched by a user. GitHub’s current reference says access to subscriber and subscription listing endpoints will be limited to admins and collaborators, and that the user-watched-repositories listing endpoint is being deprecated. The reference describes the access restrictions as introduced in July 2026; verify current permissions and availability before relying on them in production (GitHub Docs: REST API endpoints for watching).
Rank #4
For an integration, check the endpoint’s current permissions, authentication requirements, and deprecation status in the API reference, then design a fallback rather than assuming a user can enumerate every watched repository. The exact API behavior is subject to change.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website you want to inspect visually, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one request; it is a screenshot API, not a GitHub repository change-notification service. Its consent handling removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options. Example request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://github.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo is useful when your monitoring workflow needs a clean rendered capture of a page rather than a repository event alert.
