Automate competitor price monitoring by collecting comparable offers on a schedule, matching each observation to the right product in your catalog, and saving timestamped history so you can spot meaningful changes. Alerts or a pricing workflow can act on that data—but collecting prices and changing your own prices are separate decisions.
What automated competitor price monitoring does
A monitoring system repeatedly records market observations for products you sell or compete with. Depending on the source and tool, records may include price, promotion, availability, seller, and the time observed. History matters: a single low price can be a short promotion, a different product variant, or an offer with conditions that make it incomparable.

Monitoring provides information. Repricing applies a rule or decision to your own offer. You can monitor without repricing, and you can use a marketplace’s pricing feature or another integration to change prices based on selected inputs.
How to monitor competitor prices
- Define the job. Decide whether you need market awareness, reseller or minimum advertised price (MAP) compliance monitoring, or changes to your own prices. Those objectives require different coverage, alerts, and controls.
- Choose a collection method. Consider a monitoring service, a marketplace feature or API, or a custom collection workflow. Prefer an official marketplace API when it provides the required data for your use case. Confirm that the service can access the specific listings and information you need.
- Build the product set and map offers. Link each competitor offer to your own SKU or a genuinely equivalent item. Record how you treat size, color, model, bundle, condition, seller, shipping, and other offer differences. Do not compare a price until you have checked that the products and relevant offer conditions match.
- Choose the collection cadence. Schedule observations at a rate that can influence a decision. A vendor suggests hourly checks for fast promotions and daily checks for more stable catalogs; use that only as a starting heuristic and validate it against your category and operating needs.
- Keep timestamped history and set alerts. Decide which events matter—such as a competitor crossing a threshold, a promotion appearing, or an offer going unavailable—and who should receive an alert. Retain observations long enough to distinguish sustained changes from brief fluctuations.
- Review a sample before acting. Check matches and collected values manually across representative products, competitors, variants, and markets. Correct exceptions before relying on alerts or rules.
- Add price guardrails if repricing. Set minimum and, where supported, maximum prices; establish margin floors and approval steps. Keep a record of changes and test the decision logic before allowing it to update live offers.
- Reassess the setup. Recheck product mappings and coverage after catalog changes, site redesigns, or shifts in how promotions and stock are presented. Validate current site coverage, plan limits, and integrations against your actual catalog.

A dedicated service may cover multiple retailers, marketplaces, countries, and currencies and may provide matching, history, alerts, exports, or repricing. Verify the specific sites, products, update schedule, matching review process, and integration options you need. Vendor accuracy and speed claims are self-reported unless independently tested.

Examples described by their providers include Pricefy, which says it monitors across countries, currencies, and marketplaces and uses product identifiers and visual comparison for matching; Altosight, which positions its product for retailer repricing and brand MAP monitoring; and PriceMole, whose BigCommerce marketplace listing describes competitor monitoring, channel tracking, matching, MAP monitoring, and dynamic repricing. These are examples, not a ranked or independently tested comparison. Ask for a product-specific demo or trial and test a representative sample before committing.
Marketplace-native features and APIs
For Amazon, eligible Professional sellers can use Automate Pricing rules on products with an active offer. Amazon says the feature is included at no additional charge in the Professional selling plan. Sellers can set a minimum and an optional maximum. Existing rules are usually processed in less than 15 minutes, though delays can occur; new or changed rules can take up to one hour to reprice all assigned products. Amazon also says repricing does not guarantee Featured Offer status, which depends on other factors including inventory, fulfillment, and customer service.

For custom Amazon integrations, the Product Pricing API supports pricing data and notifications. A developer who wants to submit price changes programmatically also needs the Listing Items API. Amazon says a full integration typically takes one to two months; that is its stated expectation, not a guarantee for every team.

Amazon pricing fields are not interchangeable. Its API FAQ defines averageSellingPrice using purchases from the previous 60 days, excluding promotional prices and quantities; retailOfferPrice as the highest price listed in the previous 14 days for an offer shipped and sold by Amazon; and msrpPrice as a suggested retail price supplied by a manufacturer, supplier, or seller. Check the field definitions before using a value in an alert or pricing rule.

Custom collection workflow
A custom workflow can fit a specific catalog or internal data pipeline, but it makes you responsible for collection reliability, product matching, history, alerting, access rules, and maintenance when target pages change. First confirm that the required data is accessible and that your method complies with applicable site terms, access rules, privacy obligations, and local law. Get legal advice for a specific implementation; the applicable answer depends on the sites and jurisdictions involved.
What to compare when selecting a tool

More frequent collection can be useful when competitor changes affect decisions quickly, but it is not automatically better. Hourly monitoring may be a starting point for a fast-moving promotion; daily checks may suit a more stable catalog. Those are vendor heuristics, not universal standards. Consider how quickly offers change, how soon your team or rule can respond, and the cost of acting on stale or noisy data.

Do not send an alert for every difference by default. Choose thresholds and event types that prompt a useful decision, then adjust them after reviewing actual observations. Preserve timestamps so a user can distinguish a new observation from an older value.

- Review matched products across important variants, competitors, and markets; inspect borderline equivalents manually.
- Compare like with like, including promotion, availability, seller, shipping, and other conditions relevant to the offer.
- Confirm timestamps, currency handling, alert thresholds, and the behavior when a listing disappears or a collection fails.
- Test minimum and maximum prices, margin floors, and approval rules on a small set before expanding.
- Keep monitoring-only alerts separate from changes to live prices until you have verified the data and rules.
- Recheck access, site terms, privacy duties, and local law for each collection method and target market.
Publicly observing market information is not the same thing as agreeing with competitors about future prices. Avoid any arrangement that coordinates future pricing with competitors, and seek jurisdiction-specific legal advice when evaluating a particular practice.
