To join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meet an eligible audience threshold, satisfy YouTube’s account and channel requirements, then apply in YouTube Studio under Earn. YouTube reviews the channel before deciding; reaching the numbers makes you eligible to apply, but does not guarantee acceptance. This guide reflects YouTube’s rules checked October 3, 2026. A higher ad-revenue threshold is scheduled to take effect February 1, 2027, so check the Earn tab for the rules currently shown for your channel and location.
Which YPP threshold do you need?
YouTube has an earlier-access route and a higher threshold for eligibility to share advertising and YouTube Premium revenue. The earlier route does not automatically unlock ad revenue sharing.

These are YouTube eligibility thresholds checked on October 3, 2026. The expanded route is available only in listed countries and regions. Feature availability and individual terms can also vary by location. Check YouTube’s YPP overview and expanded YPP information, then confirm what YouTube Studio shows for your channel.
What counts toward the thresholds?
- Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000 public watch-hours requirement. The Shorts route uses qualified public Shorts views instead.
- Views and watch time from paid advertising campaigns do not count toward these eligibility thresholds. YouTube notes that qualifying organic views that follow a campaign may count.
- The watch-hour routes use a rolling 12-month period; the Shorts-view routes use the previous 90 days. These are not lifetime totals.

Check the channel and account requirements
Audience numbers are only one part of eligibility. Before applying, make sure the channel and Google Account meet YouTube’s stated requirements:
- The channel is in a country or region where the applicable YPP tier is available.
- The channel follows YouTube’s channel monetization policies and has no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- 2-Step Verification is enabled on the Google Account.
- The channel has access to YouTube advanced features.
- An active AdSense for YouTube account is linked, or you are ready to create one through YouTube Studio during the application.
Do not create a new AdSense for YouTube account outside the Studio application flow. YouTube’s expanded tier also requires the three valid public uploads within the last 90 days. For location and account-specific status, use the channel’s Earn tab rather than an old country list copied elsewhere.
Apply for YPP in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube and open YouTube Studio.
- Select Earn from the left-hand menu.
- When your channel is eligible, select Apply Now.
- Review and accept the base terms.
- Select Start to link an existing active AdSense for YouTube account or create one through Studio.
- Check the Get Reviewed step. If it shows In Progress, YouTube has received the application.
After acceptance, accept the monetization modules relevant to the features you intend to use. Joining YPP is not the same as activating every earning feature; each can have its own conditions.

What YouTube reviews—and how to prepare
YouTube says automated systems and human reviewers assess the channel as a whole against its policies. Reviewers may look at the channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, videos responsible for the largest share of watch time, metadata such as titles and thumbnails, and the About section. YouTube describes these as examples, not an exhaustive checklist.
Make it clear across the channel what you created and what original value your videos add. YouTube expects monetized content to be the creator’s original work; borrowed material needs significant transformation, while repetitive or mass-produced generic content may not qualify. A channel can have permission to use material and still need to meet monetization policies. No preparation method guarantees approval. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies against the channel’s videos and presentation before applying.

How long review takes, and what to do if rejected
YouTube says a decision typically takes about one month. Application volume, system issues, resource limits, or additional checks can make it take longer. Monitor the status in YouTube Studio’s Earn area.
If your channel reaches the threshold and you apply, YouTube says a later drop below that threshold does not by itself stop the review. However, changing videos’ privacy settings or deleting videos can affect the application.

If YouTube rejects your first application, its guidance says you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days. After a later rejection, the stated reapplication wait is 90 days. Check the policy issue identified in Earn, make meaningful changes to the channel, and follow the current appeal or reapplication instructions there. See YouTube’s application and rejection guidance.

As of October 3, 2026, YouTube has announced but not yet implemented a higher entry threshold for new applicants seeking ad and Premium revenue eligibility. Starting February 1, 2027, the announced threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. YouTube says the change will not affect creators already in YPP. The announced expanded route for fan-funding and Shopping remains at 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads, and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views in the stated windows. Existing partners are asked to accept updated terms by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. These are announced future rules, not the thresholds in effect on October 3, 2026.
