Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To monitor an infinite-scroll page reliably, use browser automation to scroll through the content first, wait for each new batch to load, then capture and compare repeatable viewport checkpoints. A single full-page screenshot is not a dependable substitute: it captures the document as a tall page, but may not trigger scroll-dependent loading.
Why infinite-scroll pages need a different monitoring workflow
On an infinite-scroll page, content may be added only after the browser’s visual viewport reaches a trigger point. That can include list items, images, embedded content, or other components. Capturing a tall page without actually scrolling may therefore produce a screenshot that omits content the site would normally load as a visitor scrolls.

Playwright describes page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) as capturing the full scrollable page. Its screenshot guide explains the full-page option, but a Playwright issue report describes off-screen full-page capture missing content whose loading depends on actual scrolling. Treat that issue as a reported limitation, not a guarantee about every browser or site. For a monitor, explicitly scroll through the regions you care about and verify that expected content appeared.

- List completeness or content changes: scroll through a defined set of batches and compare screenshots at representative positions.
- Layout regressions: capture consistent viewport checkpoints; a full-page image may be useful as a supplementary overview.
- A particular component: capture that element or a stable section rather than diffing the entire page.
Build a repeatable scroll-and-capture test
The example below uses Playwright Test with JavaScript. It scrolls by roughly one viewport at a time, waits for the page to settle, and saves a screenshot at each checkpoint. Set MAX_BATCHES deliberately: an endless feed has no natural stopping point. The example’s fixed batch limit is a safety rule, not a claim that each scroll corresponds to exactly one server-side batch.
Install Playwright Test
- In a new project, run
npm init -y. - Install Playwright Test with
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test. - Install the Chromium browser with
npx playwright install chromium. - Save the following test as
tests/infinite-scroll.spec.js, replacing the example URL and, if useful, the item selector with selectors from the target site.
Example test
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('monitor representative infinite-scroll checkpoints', async ({ page }) => {
const url = 'https://example.com/feed';
const itemSelector = '[data-testid="feed-item"]';
const maxBatches = 8;
const settleMs = 1000;
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
// Wait for initial content. Replace the selector if the site exposes a
// reliable feed-item selector; otherwise use a suitable page landmark.
await page.locator(itemSelector).first().waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(settleMs);
const checkpoints = [];
const capture = async (name) => {
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts && document.fonts.ready);
await page.waitForTimeout(settleMs);
const count = await page.locator(itemSelector).count();
checkpoints.push({ name, count });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(`${name}.png`, {
fullPage: false,
animations: 'disabled',
caret: 'hide',
});
};
await capture('feed-top');
let previousCount = await page.locator(itemSelector).count();
for (let batch = 1; batch <= maxBatches; batch++) {
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollBy(0, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8)));
// Allow scroll-triggered requests to begin and complete. A site-specific
// loading indicator or new-item condition is more reliable than a fixed wait.
await page.waitForTimeout(settleMs);
try {
await page.waitForFunction(
({ selector, previous }) => document.querySelectorAll(selector).length > previous,
{ selector: itemSelector, previous: previousCount },
{ timeout: 10000 }
);
} catch {
// No new item appeared within the timeout. This may mean the feed ended,
// loading failed, or the site's trigger/selector differs; retain this
// checkpoint for review rather than silently assuming success.
}
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts && document.fonts.ready);
await page.waitForTimeout(settleMs);
const currentCount = await page.locator(itemSelector).count();
if (batch === Math.ceil(maxBatches / 2)) await capture('feed-middle');
if (batch === maxBatches) await capture('feed-lower');
if (currentCount <= previousCount) {
// A deliberate stopping condition for this sample: stop after a scroll
// produces no increase in matching feed items. Adapt for sites that load
// content without changing this selector or that use a Load more button.
break;
}
previousCount = currentCount;
}
// Save counts to the test output for diagnosis; screenshots remain the visual baseline.
console.log('Observed checkpoints:', checkpoints);
});
Run it with npx playwright test tests/infinite-scroll.spec.js. On the first run, Playwright Test creates expected screenshot references; subsequent runs compare against them. The screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive captures match before comparing the last capture to its reference. See Playwright’s PageAssertions API for assertion behavior and options.
The sample uses a selector and count increase to detect new items. If the target does not expose stable item markup, replace that check with a site-specific signal, such as a loading indicator disappearing, a “Load more” button becoming available, or a known item appearing. A fixed delay alone cannot prove that loading completed.

Choose checkpoints and a stopping rule
Where to capture
Capture the top, a middle region, and a lower loaded region. Also capture the end-of-list or “Load more” state when the site has one and that state matters to the monitor. For an unbounded feed, choose a finite number of batches or specific content positions before running the monitor. This keeps runs repeatable and prevents an endless scroll loop.
The code captures the top and selected middle/lower positions, but actual feed lengths and load behavior vary. Adapt checkpoint placement to the page: if a feed has fewer batches than the example limit, capture its end state; if it grows indefinitely, stop at the same deliberate boundary on every run.
Viewport checkpoints versus one full-page image
Viewport screenshots record what a visitor sees at known positions after the page’s scroll behavior has run. A full-page screenshot can be a useful additional overview of the currently rendered document, but it does not replace scroll-driven loading. Playwright documents both the full-page capture option and viewport capture in its Page API.

Whole-page versus targeted comparisons
Use whole-viewport comparisons when a change to surrounding layout matters. If only a feed card, banner, or other component is in scope, an element screenshot can reduce unrelated noise. Keep enough surrounding context to catch changes in placement or spacing if those are part of the monitor’s purpose.
Make screenshot comparisons repeatable
Visual diffs are meaningful only when the capture conditions are sufficiently consistent. Playwright warns that screenshots can vary across rendering environments. Generate baselines and run comparisons with the same browser build, operating system, viewport dimensions, device scale, and relevant test state whenever possible. Fix the page’s data or account state if personalization changes what appears in the feed.
- Wait for the page to settle: wait for new items, images, and fonts using site-specific readiness signals where possible. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for matching consecutive captures, but that does not itself ensure an infinite-scroll request has been triggered.
- Disable only irrelevant animation: the example disables animations for screenshots. If an animation is itself what you monitor, do not disable it.
- Mask only harmless volatility: timestamps, rotating avatars, or other known nonessential regions can be masked or filtered. Do not mask content whose changes matter. Playwright documents screenshot masks and styles in the Page API and visual comparison guidance.
- Set tolerances deliberately: Playwright supports pixel-difference configuration. A tolerance can reduce noise from harmless rendering variation, but an overly permissive threshold can hide a real regression. Review diffs before accepting updated baselines.
- Keep an exclusion record: record each mask or style filter and the reason for it so future reviewers know what the monitor intentionally ignores.
Playwright Test’s reference-image workflow and environment guidance are described in its Visual comparisons documentation. Treat a changed screenshot as a signal for review, not automatic proof that the page is broken. Update a baseline only after deciding the change is expected.
Troubleshoot missed content and noisy diffs
The screenshot never shows later items
- Confirm that the test scrolls the visual viewport, rather than only requesting a full-page screenshot.
- Check that the scroll step reaches the site’s actual trigger region; some pages load only near the bottom or after a sentinel element enters view.
- Inspect whether a consent prompt, sign-in wall, bot check, or network error prevents normal loading. Handle permitted test state explicitly rather than treating missing content as a valid baseline.
- Verify the item selector. A selector that matches zero or stale elements makes count-based stopping and readiness checks misleading.
The test times out waiting for an item
The request may be slow, the page may have ended, or the selector may not match the site’s markup. Prefer waiting for a known loading indicator or item condition; use a bounded timeout and record the observed count. Do not simply increase timeouts indefinitely: distinguish a legitimate end-of-feed from a failed load.

Diffs change between otherwise identical runs
First stabilize the browser and operating-system environment, viewport, device scale, and page state. Then identify genuinely volatile regions and mask or style-filter only those areas. If the difference threshold is adjusted, review old and new diffs to ensure meaningful changes remain visible.

The full-page screenshot looks incomplete even though the page is long
That is consistent with the distinction between capturing a tall document and triggering actual scroll behavior. Scroll through the page before capturing, confirm the expected items have loaded, and use viewport checkpoints for the monitored positions. The Playwright issue report documents this kind of reported behavior, but does not establish that all full-page captures fail in the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Playwright’s screenshot assertion without Playwright Test?
The documented toHaveScreenshot() assertion belongs to Playwright Test; for a non-test script, capture images with the Page screenshot API and use a separate image-diff workflow.
Should every screenshot difference fail the monitor?
Not necessarily. Review the diff against the monitor’s purpose; accept a baseline update only when the visual change is intentional.
