A CloudConvert job marked finished can still produce a PDF with no visible content. Check the input and capture task first, then test whether the page has rendered and is accessible to CloudConvert, inspect every task’s result, and finally open the exported PDF itself. A completed workflow and a visually correct PDF are separate checks.
1. Confirm the source and capture operation
For a website URL, check that the job uses CloudConvert’s capture-website operation, that its URL is correct, and that output_format is pdf. The documented example exports the capture task’s result using an export/url task. For an uploaded HTML file, make sure the intended file is actually passed into the HTML-to-PDF workflow.

2. Check whether meaningful page content is ready
A page may load its visible content after the initial HTML arrives. Test whether the text or element you expect is present immediately or appears only after JavaScript, a network request, or another asynchronous step. CloudConvert says its headless Chrome browser can wait for a custom CSS selector to appear before generating the PDF. Choose a selector that identifies the actual content—not a generic page shell that appears before the content does.

The product page confirms selector waiting, but the operation-reference material does not establish the current payload key or value syntax. Check the live Job Builder or current operation options before adding it. Do not copy an unverified selector-wait parameter into production.
To isolate the problem, try a minimal static HTML file with visible text and no external dependencies. If that produces a visible PDF while the full page does not, investigate the full page’s scripts, delayed content, and dependencies. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed CloudConvert-specific diagnosis.
3. Verify access to URLs and dependencies
Test the URL from outside your logged-in browser session. Look for redirects, sign-in requirements, session-dependent content, or resources hosted somewhere the remote browser cannot access. A page that appears normal to you may present a login screen or empty shell to the conversion service.

CloudConvert documents custom Authorization headers for protected resources on its HTML-to-PDF page. If authentication is involved, check whether the service receives the authorization it needs. The reviewed documentation does not establish every detail of cookie or session handling, so do not assume your browser’s existing session carries over.
4. Inspect each task, not just the job status
CloudConvert API v2 jobs group named tasks, such as importing input, capturing or converting it, and exporting the result. Check the response for each task’s operation, status, result files, and any error details. Documented statuses include waiting, processing, finished, and error; a job normally fails when a task fails unless that task is configured to ignore errors. A finished capture task is not proof that the exported PDF contains visible content. Treat task execution and visual verification as separate steps: first confirm that the capture and export tasks produced the expected file, then download and inspect it.

CloudConvert supports asynchronous jobs and webhooks. A timeout in your own client or network stack while waiting for a long-running job is not, by itself, proof that rendering failed. Check the job’s actual status before submitting duplicate work; the API quickstart explains the job flow.

5. Change capture and layout settings methodically
After checking input, readiness, and access, test configuration changes one at a time. Depending on your case, compare URL input with an HTML file, or select a different engine/version only if the operation offers an alternative appropriate to your job. CloudConvert documents engine, engine-version, and timeout settings for capture-website in its operation reference.
If content is present but clipped, off-page, or visually indistinguishable from the background, investigate page dimensions, margins, zoom, and relevant CSS. CloudConvert lists page-size, margin, zoom, and custom header/footer options on its HTML-to-PDF page. These are sensible layout checks, not documented cures for a truly empty page. Record each change and its result so you can identify what affected the output.

6. Open and inspect the exported PDF
Confirm that the export task returned the expected file, download it, and inspect the PDF independently of the job response. Check whether it has pages, whether text can be selected or searched, and whether the page is empty, clipped, or rendered in a way that makes its content hard to see. CloudConvert’s job task reference documents task result files and export URLs; checking the actual document is a practical visual-verification step, not a guarantee implied by a finished status.
Distinguish a blank PDF from an API or job error
An invalid request and a successfully generated but visually empty PDF need different fixes. CloudConvert documents 422 for invalid data and dynamic rate limiting for some endpoints; a 429 response includes a Retry-After value. Handle those as request or rate-limit issues, rather than treating them as evidence that a valid PDF was rendered blank. See the API introduction.
