Compare each page capture with a visual baseline, but exclude only the timestamp element—not a broad section around it. That keeps the rest of the page under test while preventing a changing time or date from generating a visual diff. If the timestamp’s correctness matters, check its text separately with a functional assertion.
Choose what the test should ignore
Start by deciding whether you care about the timestamp’s appearance, its exact text, or both. A visual ignore region removes that element from the image comparison; it does not verify whether the displayed time is correct.

- Ignore one element when the page should otherwise be compared strictly. Prefer a stable DOM locator or selector over screen coordinates.
- Use a layout-oriented match when page structure and geometry matter more than changing text. Applitools describes Layout matching as checking layout regardless of specific dynamic content in its Layout match-level guidance.
- Keep the timestamp in scope if visual changes to its styling are important; instead, stabilize the test data or use a mode that tolerates changing content while preserving relevant appearance checks.
Avoid excluding an entire card or page region just to hide one changing value. A large ignore can conceal meaningful changes to nearby labels, spacing, or controls.

Applitools Eyes for Playwright supports locator-based ignored regions through ignoreRegions. The following illustrates the relevant pattern; use the current SDK setup and imports for your installed package version, and ensure the locator identifies the timestamp rather than its parent container.

});
For an example of the documented Playwright checkpoint and region configuration, see Applitools’ Playwright documentation. Its support article describes Layout matching for dynamic-content pages, while its current product page claims automatic handling of dynamic data such as timestamps; that is a vendor claim, not an independent evaluation: Applitools Eyes.

Chromatic
Chromatic documents three ways to ignore component content: the .chromatic-ignore class, data-chromatic="ignore", and the ignoreSelectors configuration. Use the narrowest option that fits the component. A caveat: Chromatic says the ignored element’s pixels are ignored, but changes to its dimensions still trigger diffs. That can be useful if a timestamp container unexpectedly grows, though it means a variable-width timestamp may still affect results. See Chromatic’s element-ignoring documentation.

Percy with Playwright
Percy’s Playwright client README documents ignored regions using CSS selectors, XPath, or custom boundaries, along with per-region comparison settings. Prefer a selector or XPath tied to the timestamp element when possible; a fixed coordinate rectangle can drift out of alignment if the page layout changes. Confirm syntax against the version of the Percy package in your project before copying configuration. See the Percy Playwright client README.
Keep timestamp correctness covered
If the displayed value must be valid, add a separate assertion for its text or semantics. For example, check that the element exists and that its text parses as the expected date/time format; if the test has a controlled clock or known fixture, assert the expected value. An ignored visual region cannot catch a stale timestamp, an incorrect timezone, or a formatting regression.
Rank #3
Applitools’ Playwright guidance discusses textual assertions for dynamic aspects that require programmatic evaluation. Keep that assertion independent of the visual mask so each test has a clear purpose.
Make comparisons repeatable and review diffs carefully
- Capture the same route, viewport, page state, and test setup for baseline and later runs. This is practical test hygiene rather than a vendor-neutral standard.
- Use a stable test identifier or selector where available; avoid brittle positional selectors.
- Inspect the ignored region’s boundary. Nearby content should remain visible to the comparison.
- Review the diff before accepting it. Update a baseline only when the change is intentional; Applitools describes accepting differences and updating baselines from its enhanced report in its integration tutorials.

For a screenshot capture without configuring a browser runner, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. A clean screenshot request looks like this:

- Used Book in Good Condition
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

How do I ignore timestamps in visual regression tests?
Target the timestamp element with the visual-testing tool’s ignore-region or selector feature, then assert its text separately if its value must be correct.

Can I ignore dynamic content without hiding layout changes?
Use a narrow element ignore when only that value should be excluded, or a layout-oriented comparison when structure matters more than exact content. Check how your tool handles the ignored element’s dimensions.
