Use browser automation to sign in with an approved account, save and securely reuse the browser’s authenticated state, and compare repeat screenshots with a reviewed baseline. Playwright supports this workflow with saved authentication state and screenshot assertions; the key safeguards are protecting the state file and treating login redirects or expired sessions as monitoring failures.
How the monitoring workflow works
- Use an authorized account. Create a dedicated, least-privilege test account if the site permits one. Follow the site’s access rules; don’t build a monitor around a personal account when an approved alternative is available.
- Sign in through a real browser. Use Playwright to complete the site’s ordinary login flow and save browser storage state. Playwright’s authentication guide explains how to reuse state such as cookies and other browser storage.
- Keep the state secret. Store the file in a dedicated directory such as
playwright/.auth, exclude it from version control, and restrict access. Playwright warns that a browser state file can contain sensitive cookies and headers that could impersonate the account. - Load that state for each scheduled run. Open the target page in a browser context initialized with the saved state. Confirm that the expected signed-in page—not a login page or an error—has loaded before taking a screenshot.
- Compare with a baseline. Playwright Test’s
toHaveScreenshot()assertion creates a reference screenshot on its first run and compares subsequent captures against it. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparison, which helps avoid capturing a page while it is still settling. A visual diff shows a rendering change; it does not determine whether the change is a defect. Inspect the image and diff, then update snapshots only when the change is intentional. Set up a Playwright visual check
The following example uses Playwright Test with JavaScript. It assumes you have an approved login flow and can complete it interactively once. The test expects the authenticated page to expose a stable marker; replace Dashboard and the selector with text or an element that is meaningful for your site.

Install Playwright Test and configure the project
In a Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its browser:

Create the authenticated state once
Create playwright/.auth, then add tests/save-auth.spec.js. This example pauses so you can sign in normally, complete any approved MFA step, and save the resulting state:

Subsequent runs compare against that image and report differences. The signed-in marker check matters: without it, a login form, access-denied screen, or other unexpected page could be mistaken for the page you meant to monitor.

Reduce noisy visual differences without hiding important changes
Rendering is not perfectly deterministic. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the environment and capture settings consistent with the baseline; its visual comparison guidance and best-practices guide discuss screenshot reliability.
- Fix the capture conditions: use the same browser version, operating environment, viewport, and page state wherever practical.
- Wait for the page’s real ready condition: wait for a meaningful selector or application state instead of relying on an arbitrary short delay. The screenshot assertion itself waits for consecutive matching captures, but it cannot make a page with continuously changing content static.
- Stabilize irrelevant motion: clocks, rotating banners, animations, live charts, and user-specific fields can trigger diffs even when the layout you care about is unchanged.
- Mask selectively: hide or mask only regions outside the monitoring goal. Masking a price, status, or other field that you want to monitor defeats the purpose.
- Keep data predictable where possible: use a test account and stable test data if the site supports them. If content changes per user or over time, decide whether that content is part of the signal before suppressing it.
Protect credentials and plan for session expiry
The saved state is effectively a credential: anyone who can use valid cookies or headers from it may be able to act as the account. Keep it out of source control, limit filesystem and CI access, and use a dedicated account with only the access the monitor needs. Don’t print the state contents into logs or publish it as an unrestricted build artifact.

A saved session can expire, and a site can change its login flow. MFA, SSO, or interactive challenges may require an approved integration or supervised renewal of the state. There is no universal, site-independent way to bypass those controls. If the expected signed-in marker is absent, fail the check and investigate authentication rather than accepting a screenshot of the login or challenge page as a valid baseline.
Run it on a schedule and interpret failures correctly
Playwright Test performs the browser check; recurring execution, alert delivery, and retention are operational choices you must provide. Run the test from a scheduler or CI system that can access the protected site and the secret state file. Store the baseline and test artifacts where authorized reviewers can inspect them, and route failures to someone who can distinguish a real page change from a broken session or unstable environment.

- Visual mismatch: inspect the actual and expected screenshots and the diff. If the page change is intended, update the baseline deliberately using Playwright’s snapshot-update option; don’t automatically bless every changed image.
- Login page or missing signed-in marker: treat this as an authentication failure. Renew state through the site-approved flow and check whether the login or MFA process changed.
- Repeated diffs with no meaningful change: check for animations, timestamps, rotating content, environment drift, and inconsistent test data before adding masks.
- Timeout or page-load failure: distinguish an unavailable page from a valid screenshot change. Check navigation and readiness conditions, then rerun only according to your monitoring policy.
DIY Playwright versus a hosted capture API
Playwright is a good fit when you need direct control over an authenticated browser session and are prepared to maintain the test, environment, scheduling, secret storage, and review process. A hosted screenshot API can simplify image capture, but verify its authentication support, credential handling, MFA/SSO compatibility, isolation, browser controls, and diff workflow before using it for a protected site. A generic URL-to-image call is not a substitute for safely establishing an authorized logged-in session.
