To earn ad revenue from a YouTube live stream, your channel must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), you must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, and monetization must be turned on for the stream in YouTube Studio. You can choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls; enabling a slot does not guarantee that an ad will appear.
Check eligibility before setting up ads
YouTube requires YPP acceptance and the Watch Page Monetization Module for Watch Page ad revenue on live streams. YouTube’s listed ad-revenue threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the preceding 365 days, or the applicable Shorts threshold. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance: the channel is subject to YouTube review and applicable policies. Thresholds and feature availability can change, so check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility information and the Earn section of Studio for your channel and location. For monetized channels without rights management, YouTube provides channel-level defaults for future streams; its documented default is monetization on with automatic mid-rolls at medium frequency. Channels with rights management do not currently have these channel-level settings. Check the stream’s own settings before going live rather than assuming a default applies.
Choose how mid-roll ads are placed

YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not turned the feature on. This was a platform-reported comparison covering 207 countries in January 2024, not a guaranteed result for an individual channel.
Control automatic ads during an important moment
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to delay automatic ads for 10 minutes when you need to protect a key moment. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. This delay does not suppress manually inserted breaks, so avoid placing a manual ad during the moment you are trying to keep uninterrupted.

YouTube decides whether an ad serves in a given slot based on factors that balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. A viewer who does not receive an ad continues watching; after an ad ends or is skipped, the viewer rejoins the live stream. Different viewers may see ads at different times. A slot or monetization setting is therefore not an earnings guarantee.

YouTube’s format comparison says horizontal live streams support pre-roll and mid-roll ads, while the vertical live feed does not. Vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts feed; horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and the channel description. Both formats support memberships and gifted memberships. Choose based on the stream’s production and discovery needs, not on an assumption that vertical live feed will carry live ad breaks.
Ads are turned off for a live stream when the YouTube player is embedded on an external site with auto start. Side-by-side mid-rolls appear automatically only on eligible streams; streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. These delivery details can affect what viewers see even when monetization is on.

What affects whether a stream can earn
- Content and advertiser suitability: Material not suitable for all audiences may be age-restricted and ineligible for monetization; advertiser-unfriendly material may receive limited or no ads.
- Copyright and rights: Use material you have the rights to use and follow YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. A live stream’s monetization setting cannot override rights restrictions.
- Location and feature access: YPP and monetization features depend on applicable geographic and channel conditions. YouTube’s reviewed earnings page notes a Russia-specific pause in ads and some monetization features; confirm current availability for your location.
- Future terms: YouTube Help states that updated YPP terms begin February 1, 2027, with acceptance due by January 31, 2027. If your channel remains active near that date, review the terms and any Studio notice.

Understand the revenue terms
YouTube says partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue for ads on public videos on their content Watch Page and public videos streamed in the YouTube Video Player on other sites or applications. This is a revenue-share term, not an RPM or a per-view earnings promise.
