How to Connect OBS Studio to AWS Media Services

AWS has multiple OBS ingest routes. Learn which endpoint and settings to use for an IVS low-latency channel, a real-time stage, or MediaLive.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect OBS Studio to AWS, first identify the destination: an Amazon IVS low-latency channel, an IVS real-time stage, or an AWS Elemental MediaLive input. They use different setup paths and connection details. For an IVS channel, use the channel’s AWS-provided stream key and endpoint; for an IVS real-time stage, create an ingest configuration and enter its endpoint and key in OBS; for MediaLive, configure its RTMP VPC push input rather than reusing IVS credentials.

Choose the AWS destination before opening OBS

“AWS Media Services” is an umbrella term, not a single OBS destination. Choose based on the kind of stream you are building:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Destination Use it for Connection setup
Amazon IVS low-latency channel A channel broadcast using the IVS channel workflow. Use the IVS service integration in OBS, or configure SRT as described below. Use the endpoint and credentials associated with your channel.
Amazon IVS real-time stage A publisher sending audio and video into an IVS real-time stage. Create an ingest configuration for the stage, then enter its RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and stream key in OBS.
AWS Elemental MediaLive A MediaLive workflow receiving a push input over RTMP in a VPC. Set up the MediaLive input, VPC configuration, and role it needs; use that input’s own connection details.

Do not use an IVS channel’s endpoint or key for a real-time stage or MediaLive. OBS sends the program made from its sources—such as a webcam, capture card, game, or display—but those sources are not required just to configure a connection.

Connect OBS to an Amazon IVS low-latency channel

AWS’s OBS walkthrough covers RTMPS and uses OBS Studio v30.2 or later. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval for that setup. The channel provides the endpoint and stream key; use the values for your own channel, not an example from a guide.

  1. Prepare the IVS channel. Create or select the low-latency channel in AWS and locate its ingest endpoint and stream key in the AWS console or the channel’s configuration output.
  2. Open OBS’s stream settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
  3. Select the service. Choose the Amazon IVS service option and provide the channel’s stream key as prompted. Use the channel-specific connection information shown by AWS.
  4. Set the keyframe interval. In OBS’s output or encoder settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, as recommended for the documented IVS low-latency setup.
  5. Apply and test. Save the settings, then select Start Streaming. Confirm that the channel receives the stream in the AWS workflow before relying on it for a live event.

For an IVS low-latency channel, AWS also documents SRT ingest with OBS. In that configuration, select Custom under Settings > Stream, put the SRT connection details—including the endpoint, port, stream ID, and applicable passphrase—in the Server field, and leave OBS’s separate Stream Key field empty. Obtain the exact SRT values from the channel-specific AWS console or CLI output; do not construct them from a sample.

Connect OBS to an Amazon IVS real-time stage

A real-time stage requires an ingest configuration associated with the stage. Its endpoint and key are distinct from an IVS low-latency channel’s details.

  1. Create the stage and ingest configuration. In AWS, create or select the real-time stage, then create an ingest configuration associated with it.
  2. Copy the generated connection values. Retrieve the ingest configuration’s RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and stream key.
  3. Configure OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose Custom, enter the endpoint in Server, and enter the ingest configuration’s key in Stream Key.
  4. Use RTMPS unless you intentionally enabled insecure ingest. The ingest configuration’s insecureIngest setting defaults to false, so RTMPS is required by default. AWS recommends RTMPS; RTMP works only when it has been deliberately enabled for the configuration.
  5. Apply the real-time encoder constraints. Configure the video and audio settings described below, save, then start streaming and verify that the stage receives the publisher.

Real-time RTMP video and audio limits

These limits apply to IVS real-time RTMP publishing; they are not universal settings for every AWS service or IVS mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Video codec: H.264.
  • B-frames: disabled; the stream must not use B-frames.
  • Resolution: up to 720p.
  • Video bitrate: no more than 8.5 Mbps. AWS advises setting the encoder’s maximum below the service ceiling because bitrate can briefly exceed the target; its documented example is 6 Mbps.
  • Tracks: send both audio and video.
  • Keyframe interval: AWS recommends one or two seconds for real-time RTMP.
  • Encoder options: AWS recommends settings such as veryfast and zerolatency where applicable.

In OBS, these controls are generally in Settings > Output for encoder, bitrate, and keyframe settings, and Settings > Video for output resolution. Exact labels and available controls depend on the selected encoder. Verify the resulting stream stays within the real-time-stage limits rather than assuming a preset is suitable.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Connect OBS to AWS Elemental MediaLive

MediaLive is a separate route from IVS. AWS documents an RTMP VPC push input; its setup includes VPC configuration and a role for MediaLive to assume. Create and configure the MediaLive input on the AWS side, then use the input’s own connection information in OBS. Do not enter an IVS channel or stage endpoint and key for this workflow. The detailed MediaLive input procedure depends on the VPC and input configuration, so follow the current MediaLive instructions for the specific input you created.

Protect keys and verify the stream

  • Treat every stream key and passphrase as a credential. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it in a public support post.
  • If a key is exposed, replace or rotate it using the AWS resource’s controls, then update OBS with the replacement.
  • Use the protocol and endpoint generated for the exact AWS resource. RTMPS uses TLS; SRT connection details and OBS fields differ from RTMPS.
  • Before an event, confirm that the AWS resource exists and is configured, that OBS is sending, and that the destination is receiving the expected audio and video.

Troubleshoot common connection failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot connect to the server Wrong endpoint, wrong destination type, or a protocol mismatch. Confirm whether the destination is an IVS channel, real-time stage, or MediaLive input. Copy its own endpoint and use the protocol enabled for it.
Real-time-stage connection fails over RTMP Insecure ingest is disabled by default. Use the RTMPS endpoint, or enable RTMP deliberately only if that is required for your use case.
OBS connects but the stage does not accept the stream Wrong ingest configuration key or unsupported encoding settings. Check that the key belongs to the stage’s ingest configuration and confirm H.264, no B-frames, audio and video tracks, resolution up to 720p, and the bitrate ceiling.
SRT connection does not work Connection components entered in the wrong field or copied incompletely. For the documented IVS channel setup, put the SRT endpoint, port, stream ID, and applicable passphrase in Server; leave Stream Key empty. Re-copy the values from AWS.
MediaLive does not receive the OBS stream The input, VPC setup, role, or input-specific connection values are incomplete or mismatched. Verify the MediaLive RTMP VPC push input’s AWS-side configuration and use its own connection details, not IVS credentials.

Or let it run in the cloud

OBS is the do-it-yourself option when you want to operate the encoder and connection yourself. If your goal is instead to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream a live camera feed.
