Choose the revenue model that fits what your readers value and how they use your site: ads earn from ad activity, affiliate links from qualifying purchases or actions, and subscriptions from paid access to continuing or distinct value. None guarantees income. Each also brings operating work—especially policy compliance, clear disclosures, or a sustainable paid offer.
How the three website monetization models work
| Model | What earns revenue | Questions to ask | Key constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display advertising | Ad impressions or other activity defined by the advertising network. | Can the reader experience accommodate ads? Do you have suitable content, and how much control will you have over ad placement and format? | Follow the network’s current policies, avoid invalid activity, and account for privacy disclosures. |
| Affiliate links | Qualifying purchases or other actions after a reader uses a tracked link. | Are the recommendations genuinely useful to your audience? Can you explain why a product fits and disclose the financial relationship clearly? | The program’s terms determine qualifying activity and commissions. Disclose the relationship where readers encounter the recommendation. |
| Paid subscriptions | Paid access to a publication, content, or another distinct reader benefit. | Is there a clear offer readers will pay for? Can you keep delivering it and explain exactly what subscribers receive? | Terms and economics depend on the platform. A platform’s subscription model does not establish what another publisher will earn. |
These are decision criteria, not earnings forecasts. Available official guidance does not establish comparable income figures, traffic thresholds, conversion rates, or a universally most profitable model.

When advertising fits—and what it requires
Advertising may suit a site whose content and reading experience can accommodate ads without undermining the value readers came for. Before adding ad code, check the network’s rules and your responsibilities around privacy. For Google monetization, Google Publisher Policies apply to publishers using Google ad code. Google says violations may lead to ads being blocked or an account being suspended or terminated.
Do not solicit or manufacture ad activity
AdSense prohibits artificial clicks or impressions and asking users to click non-rewarded ads. Do not prompt readers to click ordinary ads or arrange activity designed to inflate engagement. Review AdSense Program policies for the current requirements.
Explain relevant data practices
Google requires a privacy policy that describes relevant data collection, sharing, and use, including technologies used in connection with its products and ad serving. Its policy examples include cookies, web beacons, and IP addresses. Make sure your policy reflects the technologies and services actually used on your site.
When affiliate links fit—and how to disclose them
Affiliate links can work when readers are already looking for recommendations, comparisons, or product guidance. Revenue depends on a reader completing a program-defined qualifying purchase or action; a link does not guarantee acceptance into a program, a conversion, or a commission. Amazon Associates, for example, allows eligible website publishers to use properly tagged special links and earn on qualifying purchases, subject to its Operating Agreement and program policies.

Put the disclosure beside the recommendation
Tell readers plainly when a link may earn you a commission. Place the explanation where they will see it with the endorsement or recommendation—not only on a distant policy page. Amazon’s disclosure guidance gives examples including “(paid link),” “#ad,” and “#CommissionsEarned,” and requires an Associate statement on the site. The FTC’s U.S. guidance, Disclosures 101, likewise says the disclosure should appear with the endorsement message. Follow the applicable program terms and rules for your jurisdiction and context.

Disclosing a commission does not excuse unsupported product claims. FTC advertising guidance says claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based; keep endorsements and testimonials supportable.

When subscriptions fit—and what to define first
Subscriptions ask readers to pay for an ongoing publication or a distinct benefit. Before choosing this model, state what is included, how often you will deliver it, and what makes the paid offer worth maintaining for both you and the subscriber. The platform example in the available official sources is Substack: its support page describes subscriptions as its business model, while allowing sponsored content under its Publisher Agreement and Content Guidelines. That example does not establish universal pricing, publisher outcomes, or suitability for every site.
How to choose a starting model
- Start with reader value. If readers come for information that can be supported by ads without disrupting use, assess advertising. If they seek product advice, consider relevant affiliate recommendations. If you can provide continuing or distinct value, consider a paid subscription.
- Count the operating work. Advertising involves network policies and privacy information; affiliate publishing involves program terms, useful recommendations, and visible disclosures; subscriptions involve defining and sustaining the promised offer.
- Check the constraints before implementation. Read current ad-network or affiliate-program policies, or the subscription platform’s publisher terms and content rules. Requirements and terms can vary by service and geography.
- Set expectations without assuming revenue. Compare the models against your own audience, content, and capacity. The official sources cited here do not support a general earnings ranking or a reliable income forecast.
