How to Mix a Live Stream Remotely Without a Second Mixer

A practical software-first routing guide to mixing host, guest and playback audio without a second physical mixer—and sending guests a return that excludes their own voice.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can mix a live stream without a second physical mixer: combine your host mic, guest audio and playback in your streaming software or an audio interface’s software mixer, then monitor the actual feed going to the stream. If a remote guest needs to hear the show, send a separate mix-minus return—a mix of the other audio with that guest’s own channel removed. That is what stops them hearing their voice come back with a delay.

Plan the audio paths before you go live

A mixer is one way to combine and route audio, not the only way. For a small production, OBS may be enough; a compatible audio interface can provide its own software mixer and virtual outputs; broadcast software or a hardware switcher may offer dedicated guest-return routing. Choose based on the routes you actually need, not on the number of boxes in the setup.

  • Host microphone: public program, operator headphones, and guest return.
  • Remote guest: public program and operator headphones, but not that guest’s return.
  • Desktop, game, or playback audio: public program and, if useful, guest return.
  • Music and alerts: public program, and guest return only if the guest should hear them.

This map separates three jobs that are easy to confuse: what viewers hear, what the operator monitors, and what each guest receives. A virtual output or dedicated bus can carry a different mix from the public program. Exact routing depends on your software, interface, operating system, and guest platform; follow the documentation for the equipment and apps you use.

  • [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
  • [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
  • [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
  • [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.

Build and check the program mix

  1. Add each audio source once in your streaming application. In OBS, give sources clear names and use the Audio Mixer to control their levels and monitor them. Avoid adding the same microphone or playback through multiple routes unless you deliberately need that result; duplicates can produce echo or an unexpectedly loud signal. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
  2. Set levels at the source, then check them in the streaming application. Speak or play representative audio while watching the OBS meter. Its red zone indicates a signal close to clipping. Do not rely on a universal meter target: check the source, the application’s monitoring, and a test recording.
  3. Listen to the application’s monitored audio. OBS provides audio monitoring so you can check what the mixer is receiving. Use headphones to avoid sending playback into an open microphone.
  4. Check channel layout. OBS sends a mono source to both left and right channels. Stereo sources are assigned left and right separately, so a one-sided stereo assignment can leave viewers hearing a source in only one channel.

When an interface has a software mixer

A supported interface may mix a microphone and computer playback, then expose that combination as a virtual input to OBS. For example, PreSonus’s Revelator Dynamic setup walkthrough uses Universal Control to set mic and playback levels, routes them to virtual Stream Mix A, and selects Stream Mix A as OBS’s Mic/Aux input. Its Main output is for connected headphones or speakers, keeping local monitoring separate from the virtual stream output. That is one documented example, not a required device or a universal interface workflow.

Send the guest a mix-minus return

A mix-minus is a copy of the program or another chosen mix with one or more channels removed. For a guest, remove that guest’s own audio from the return sent back to them. Otherwise, they may hear their voice returning after it has travelled through the call and production setup.

Behringer XENYX 802S Premium Analog 8-Input Mixer with USB Streaming Interface
  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
  • Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device

Build the return from the sources the guest should hear—often the host and selected program audio—and exclude that guest’s channel. Keep the guest in the public program mix; it is only their return feed that omits them. Test the actual feed reaching the guest rather than assuming the public mix and guest return are the same.

Possible ways to create the return

  • Broadcast software with guest-call routing: vMix says its Call mixer automatically creates a guest mix-minus. Its mix-minus troubleshooting guide also discusses echo causes and checks.
  • Hardware with an AUX bus: Roland’s V-8HD instructions assign an output to AUX and set the guest channel’s send to minus infinity. The documented AUX audio-bus behavior depends on V-8HD firmware 2.00 or later.
  • Interface or other software routing: Use separate virtual outputs or buses if the device and software support them. Consult their documentation for the exact routing controls and operating-system requirements.

OBS’s source mixer and monitoring do not mean every OBS setup automatically provides a separate guest return. The available routing depends on the production software, interface, and guest platform. Confirm how the guest platform receives its return before the show.

  • Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer

Prevent echo and rehearse the real feed

Mix-minus prevents a particular routing loop; it does not prevent every kind of echo. A guest or operator microphone can pick up loud speakers, and an extra webcam, camera, or room microphone may capture program playback. Those signals can re-enter the mix through a different path.

  • Use headphones at the production end and ask guests to use headphones.
  • Audit active microphones and camera audio sources; mute or remove any input that should not be part of the show.
  • Check that the stream feed itself is not being played into an open microphone.
  • Make a short test recording and listen back on headphones and ordinary speakers.

In the recording, confirm that the host, guests, desktop audio, and music are present at usable levels; the guest does not hear their delayed voice; stereo material reaches both channels as intended; and no playback is feeding back through a microphone. OBS recommends recording a representative session and listening back before going live. The OBS guide and vMix troubleshooting guide cover relevant monitoring and echo checks.

Choose a routing approach that fits the show

Approach Best fit Check before choosing
OBS source mixer and monitoring A small production whose routing needs are met by the available software and sources Source count, guest-return routing, and how you will monitor and preflight
Interface software mixer with virtual outputs A setup needing separate headphone and stream mixes or additional physical inputs Input count, virtual outputs, operating-system compatibility, monitoring controls, and setup complexity
Broadcast software with guest mix-minus A remote-call production where the software handles the guest path Guest workflow, return behavior, number of guests, and operator controls
Hardware switcher or mixer with an AUX bus A more complex production needing dedicated independent buses AUX/output count, firmware and routing details, physical connections, monitoring, and sync

These are workflow categories, not a ranked product comparison. The cited documentation describes particular capabilities and examples; it does not establish controlled comparative performance.

Common problems and fixes

  • The guest hears their own voice with a delay: their channel is probably included in their return, or another route is feeding the program back to them. Remove the guest channel from the return and test with the guest or a controlled call.
  • There is still echo after setting up mix-minus: check for open microphones near speakers, extra camera or webcam audio, and an accidentally active source. Use headphones and audit the full signal path.
  • Viewers hear audio on only one side: inspect stereo channel assignments. OBS treats mono as both left and right, while stereo left and right are assigned separately.
  • The stream sounds distorted or clips: lower the level at the source or application and check the meter again. Listen to the monitored signal and a recording rather than judging from the meter alone.
  • The guest cannot hear the host or selected playback: confirm those sources are included in the guest return, not merely the public program mix, and verify the guest platform is receiving the intended output.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded video, rather than mix a live microphone-and-guest production, StreamNeo is a different kind of setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
