Provider-supported account migrations cover specific moves within that provider; the reviewed Claude and ChatGPT guides do not describe a general Claude-to-other-provider import. For a cross-provider migration, preserve what you can, rebuild workflow context and access deliberately, then test before switching the team over.

What “memory” means during a migration
Teams often use “memory” to mean several different things, and they do not necessarily have the same transfer path:
- Reusable instructions: shared prompts, custom instructions, role and style guidance, and decision rules.
- Knowledge: project files, templates, reference documents, and connections to authoritative sources.
- Project state: decisions, unresolved questions, and the current status of active work.
- Personalization: saved preferences or memory associated with an individual account.
- History: past conversations, their files, and outputs.
- Workflow machinery: custom assistants, skills, integrations, permissions, and automation triggers.
A conversation archive may preserve useful records, but it is not automatically a well-organized knowledge base or a working procedure. Decide which information the team needs to retain as records and which context must be rebuilt to make each workflow function.
#1 Best Overall
1. Inventory workflows and their owners
Start with recurring work, not a bulk copy of chat history. Ask each team to document the workflows it relies on and identify an owner who can approve the rebuilt version.
For each workflow, record its purpose, inputs, expected output, quality checks, users, permissions, integrations, automation triggers, and business criticality. Include:
- Shared prompts, custom instructions, role or style guidance, and decision rules.
- Project files, reference documents, templates, data dictionaries, and the authoritative source location and owner for each.
- Important prior decisions, unresolved questions, and active project status.
- Custom assistants, skills, Gems, GPTs, or other reusable configurations.
- Connected apps, repositories, cloud folders, authorization owners, and API dependencies.
- Outputs that must remain available, including published or externally shared material.
- Workspace membership, project sharing, access levels, retention rules, compliance requirements, and recovery needs.
Claude Projects, for example, combine project-specific instructions with uploaded project knowledge. Claude Team and Enterprise support project sharing with view and edit permissions, subject to administrator controls. When rebuilding a Claude workflow, map both its instruction layer and its knowledge layer to destination capabilities; copying chat text alone may leave out either one.
2. Confirm what you can preserve
Personal Claude accounts
If a personal Claude account is being closed or changed, Anthropic’s account-migration guidance recommends exporting account data first when a copy is needed. Check the current export instructions and your organization’s policies before changing account access.
Claude Team or Enterprise organization data
Anthropic’s Privacy Center says only a Primary Owner can initiate a self-serve organization export. The owner uses Organization settings > Data and privacy > Export Data; Anthropic sends a download link by email, and the link expires 24 hours after delivery. Data already deleted by a user or by enterprise retention settings is absent from an export initiated afterward. Do not treat an individual account export as a complete copy of shared organization data.
Enterprise compliance retrieval
For Enterprise compliance needs, Anthropic’s Compliance API can retrieve chats, files, projects, and attachments for eDiscovery, data loss prevention enforcement, and account-deletion responses when the organization has a Compliance Access Key with the required retrieval scope. This is a compliance interface, not a general-purpose import into another assistant. Retention settings and hard deletion affect what remains retrievable.
Protect the migration copy
Use exports only as company policy allows. Store them in an approved location with suitable access controls, set an owner and retention period for the migration copy, and check whether legal hold, audit, or retention obligations require a separate process.

Make the mapping explicit before rebuilding. The table is a planning aid, not a claim that every destination supports every feature.
| Source component | Destination work | Validation question |
|---|---|---|
| Project or custom instructions | Recreate them in the destination’s project, assistant, skill, or instruction feature. | Does it follow the critical rules on ordinary and edge-case requests? |
| Project knowledge and files | Re-upload approved files or connect approved sources; preserve version and owner information. | Can it find the correct source and distinguish current material from stale material? |
| Conversation history | Archive, selectively summarize, or retain it in the source according to policy. | Does the team need searchable records, or only durable decisions and context? |
| Connected apps and repositories | Reauthorize using approved accounts and least-privilege permissions. | Does each workflow access only the data it should, and does an owner know how to revoke access? |
| Custom assistants, skills, and automations | Rebuild or replace unsupported actions and triggers. | Are outputs, approvals, error handling, schedules, and ownership still correct? |
| Shared projects and team access | Recreate membership, view and edit rights, and ownership. | Can the right people use and maintain the workflow without making it too broadly accessible? |
| Published artifacts and public links | Save and republish material only if permitted; update references. | Do recipients still have the intended access, and have old links been handled? |
For each destination feature, verify current importable content, account eligibility, file limits, integrations, and administrative controls. Feature names alone are not evidence that two products behave the same way.
4. Rebuild one representative workflow
Choose a useful but low-risk workflow and reconstruct it end to end before moving dependent work. Bring over the smallest durable context that makes it work: clear instructions, approved reference material, representative input and output examples, and a quality checklist. Keep any full conversation archive separately if retention policy calls for it.
If the destination is ChatGPT Business or Enterprise
OpenAI documents an in-product migration from a personal ChatGPT workspace into ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. Its documented scope includes supported conversations, files, custom GPTs, Projects, saved memory, and personalization, but it also lists exclusions or areas requiring review, including unsupported files, collaborators’ projects, custom connectors, and Sites. This is a provider-specific personal-to-business migration, not a Claude-to-ChatGPT import.

OpenAI says the migration flow does not let users select individual chats, projects, or files. Save and inspect an export first if you need to review or retain material before proceeding. Check the current OpenAI guidance for the precise scope and eligibility of the move.
Rank #4
If the destination is Gemini
Google Workspace Help’s guidance, last updated September 30, 2026, says Gems are scheduled to be phased out in favor of skills on a staged timeline. The guidance says Gemini-app skills do not currently sync with Workspace-app skills. It recommends manually rebuilding critical Gems and re-uploading knowledge files for continuity, and advises administrators to replace Workspace Studio flows that use the Ask a Gem step. Confirm the rollout status and the specific Gemini surface your team will use at migration time.
5. Pilot and validate before sign-off
Have workflow owners run representative tasks in both the old and rebuilt workflow. Record failures and repair the destination version before moving dependent users. Check that it:
- Produces the required format and follows important instructions.
- Finds the correct current files and uses them accurately.
- Preserves necessary citations, links, structured output, and approval steps.
- Respects access boundaries and does not expose material to unauthorized users.
- Completes required integrations or clearly signals when a connection is missing.
- Handles difficult or ambiguous inputs safely and escalates when review is expected.
- Leaves an auditable record and has a known owner for updates and incidents.
Get workflow-owner approval, and involve security, IT, privacy, legal, or compliance reviewers when the data or policies require it. Keep a fallback plan that accounts for one-way moves and source retention rules.

Move a pilot group first, then expand by workflow or team. Tell users where the new workflow lives, who owns it, how to report missing content, and what will happen to the old account and its integrations. Keep the source environment available until required material is preserved and the destination passes the agreed checks.
Provider-specific issues to check
- Claude personal-to-Team or Enterprise move: Anthropic describes this move as one-way. Custom skills do not migrate; connected-app sign-ins are revoked; user-added custom connectors must be added again; published artifacts and public chat links do not carry over; and Cowork desktop sessions remain local. Anthropic’s instructions include exporting skills, saving published artifacts and public-link content, noting connected apps, and reconnecting them. Its guidance also treats Claude Design systems or projects migrated since August 14, 2026 differently from earlier migrations; check the applicable plan and current instructions.
- ChatGPT personal-to-Business or Enterprise move: OpenAI says migrated content is controlled by the destination organization, may become inaccessible if the user loses workspace access, and does not move back to a personal workspace. After migration, its guidance recommends reviewing conversations, GPTs, Projects, Library, automations, saved memory, personalization, plugins, and connected apps.
After the move, check resource lists and search for expected material. For Claude, chat lists may take time to populate, and the first historical search may rebuild its index. OpenAI recommends checking resource lists and searching archived chats if content appears to be missing.
Compare destinations against the team’s actual work
There is no evidence-based universal winner in the reviewed provider guidance. Before choosing a destination, compare it against your inventory:
- Workflow fit: Can it perform the required tasks and produce the necessary formats?
- Context portability: Which files, instructions, history, assistants, and memories can be imported or exported, and which must be rebuilt?
- Knowledge handling: How are reference files stored, searched, refreshed, and permissioned?
- Integrations: Are required systems supported, and what happens to authorization when an account or workspace changes?
- Administration and security: Can administrators manage membership, access, retention, audit, connectors, and data residency as required?
- Collaboration: Can the team share reusable work with appropriate view and edit permissions?
- Recovery and exit: What can be exported, which moves are one-way, and how can the team recover if access is lost?
- Operational change: What training, rebuilt automations, validation, and support will the move require?
Migration work is more than transferring files or conversation history: it includes restoring the instructions, knowledge, permissions, integrations, and checks that make a workflow dependable.
