The best Dell XPS 13 alternative depends first on the software a student needs and the operating system it supports. For macOS users, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is a strong all-round choice. For Windows travelers who want more connectivity options, consider the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition; for a larger screen and built-in USB-A, consider the Acer Swift Air 14. The MacBook Neo is another student-focused macOS option, but its 8GB of unified memory deserves careful consideration.
How to choose an XPS 13 alternative
Start with required course software, exam tools, accessibility tools, and peripherals. Ask the department or instructors whether they support macOS or Windows; the compatibility of a particular student’s tools is not established by the product comparisons cited here.

Then compare the exact laptop configuration, not only its product-family name. Check processor, memory, storage, display, weight, ports, charging, warranty, and local service. Features and capabilities can vary by SKU and region. The XPS 13 review notes that port capabilities differ by processor tier and flags 8GB memory as a concern for heavier workloads; confirm the configuration listed by the retailer before buying (TechRadar’s 2026 XPS 13 review).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScreen size and ports are practical travel trade-offs: a 13-inch-class laptop is easier to use in tight spaces, while a 14-inch-class display gives more working area. If you often connect peripherals, count the ports you will need while charging—not just the ports printed in a product listing.

MacBook Air 13-inch (M5, 2026): best fit for macOS users
Tom’s Guide names the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 its top overall pick in its 2026 13-inch laptop guide. The listed configuration range includes a 13.6-inch, 2560 × 1664 display, an M5 10-core CPU, 16GB–32GB of memory, and 512GB–4TB of storage; listed weight is 2.7 pounds. Check the specific SKU, since memory and storage depend on configuration (Tom’s Guide’s 2026 13-inch laptop guide).
Tom’s Guide reports 15 hours 37 minutes in its own battery test. That is the publication’s result, not a guaranteed runtime: workload, settings, and configuration affect how long a student gets between charges. Choose this model if the software and accessories you need work with macOS.

MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 2026): a student-focused option with a memory caveat
TechRadar’s 2026 student-laptop guide lists the MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro, 8GB of unified memory, a 13-inch 2408 × 1506 screen, and up to 512GB SSD. Its student focus may suit lighter workloads, but consider whether 8GB will be sufficient for the multitasking and applications required in your course. Confirm macOS compatibility before choosing it (TechRadar’s 2026 student laptop guide).

The reviewed XPS 13 has two USB-C ports, which can become limiting if you need several peripherals connected while charging. A USB-C hub with power pass-through may help, but match it to the laptop’s supported charging wattage, data standards, and external-display needs. TechRadar identifies a hub as a useful workaround for the XPS 13’s limited port count; the Swift Air comparison, by contrast, lists USB-A alongside Thunderbolt 4 (TechRadar; Windows Central).

Check local price, student eligibility, and configuration
Dell’s US comparison page lists the XPS 13 at a $699.99 starting price and a $599 starting price for eligible students. These are Dell US prices, can change, and do not establish competitor pricing (Dell US XPS comparison). Dell India’s blog separately describes a US student offer with eligibility, configuration limits, and an expiry date; those promotion terms apply to that offer, not to every region or future purchase (Dell India’s XPS 13 blog).
The same Dell India blog attributes claims of 12.7 mm thickness and 1 kg weight to Dell’s internal analysis. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative measurements. Before buying any candidate, compare current local stock and price, exact memory and storage, warranty, and service availability.
