Microsoft documents ways to export Teams content, but Element’s Teams Bridge is a separate, ongoing connection—not an archive importer—and Element says it is no longer available for purchase. If preserving old messages in Element is essential, confirm that a destination provider or custom migration can ingest your data and prove the result with a representative test before switching.
First, decide what “migrate” means
Several different goals can sound like a Teams-to-Element migration, but they require different solutions:

- Move old conversations into Element: This requires a tool that can convert Teams data into Matrix messages and create the corresponding Element rooms and history. The official documentation reviewed here does not describe a direct importer for this.
- Keep accessing Teams conversations from Element: This is the purpose of a bridge, which connects services rather than turning an exported archive into native historical messages.
- Retain records without importing them: Export and keep the Teams data as a separate archive, subject to your organization’s retention, access-control, and compliance requirements.
Choose the intended outcome before exporting. A source export is not, by itself, searchable Element room history.
What Microsoft can export from Teams
Microsoft documents Teams Export APIs for 1:1 chats, group chats, meeting chats, and channel messages. API access depends on the appropriate Teams licensing and permissions. Microsoft notes that relevant API calls can retrieve sent and received messages for a user; exporting for multiple users can therefore return duplicates that need to be filtered and deduplicated. See Microsoft’s Teams export documentation for current scope and requirements.

Microsoft also describes an admin-center export option for small and medium-sized customers switching from Teams. The documentation says it supports unlimited exports during a 90-day period using a single action in the Teams admin center. Eligibility and availability can change, so check the current option and your tenant’s access before relying on that window. Details are on Microsoft’s export options for switching from Teams page.
These are ways to extract content from Teams. They do not establish that the resulting files or API data can be imported into Element as messages.

What the Element Teams Bridge does—and does not do
Element’s Teams Bridge documentation says, “The Teams bridge is no longer available for purchase,” and describes the documentation as applying to existing customers. Its documented workflow connects a Teams team with Element-hosted services: users authenticate to Teams through a bridge bot, and the team appears in Element as a space with channels represented as rooms. Private channels are listed as unsupported. See Element’s Teams Bridge documentation for its current availability and behavior.

This is a connected-service workflow, not documentation for importing a Teams export as historical Matrix messages. If your organization already has access to the bridge, confirm with Element what it supports in your deployment; do not assume that connecting Teams will populate Element with a complete, independently imported history.

Why Microsoft’s Graph message-import API is not the answer
Microsoft also documents importing third-party platform messages into Teams using Microsoft Graph. The direction matters: the destination is Teams, not Element. The documented process involves selecting and extracting third-party data, mapping its structure to Teams, converting it to the required format, importing in migration mode, and completing the migration. The API is not a Teams-to-Element importer. See Microsoft’s third-party message import overview.
For that Teams-bound API, Microsoft specifies application permissions including Teamwork.Migrate.All and requires the destination chat or channel to be in migration mode. Original-author attribution must map to a user in the authenticated tenant. A supplied historical timestamp must be later than the destination conversation’s creation time, not be in the future, and be unique to millisecond precision within that conversation. Microsoft’s overview also gives a limit of five requests per second per channel. These are constraints for importing into Teams, not capabilities or limits for Element. See the Microsoft Graph import reference.

Microsoft’s Teams import schema lists support for rich text, reply chains, reactions (up to 250), mentions, emojis, code snippets, quotes, announcements, stickers, and inline images. It lists videos and cross-posts between channels as out of scope; inline images are the only supported media type in that schema. Those specifications describe Teams import and should not be treated as a promise about any Element migration.

How to assess a Teams-to-Element migration
- Confirm the export route. In the Teams admin center, check whether the switching export option is available to your tenant. If using Export APIs, confirm licensing, permissions, user coverage, retention requirements, and filters. Keep the raw export and record when and how it was obtained.
- Inventory the conversations. Separate 1:1, group, meeting, and channel data. Identify which messages and files must remain accessible, and document the expected identities, timestamps, replies, reactions, edits, and links.
- Ask the destination provider for a specific ingestion method. Request documentation for importing the format you will export into Matrix or Element. Do not assume that uploading an HTML or JSON archive will create Element room history.
- Run a representative test before committing. Use a sample that includes the kinds of chats and content your organization relies on. Compare message counts, senders, dates, thread structure, attachments, links, access controls, and search results against the source.
- Check security and reversibility. Ask how identity matching works, who can access imported content, how encryption is handled, what audit records are produced, and whether you can retain the original export or undo the cutover.
- Keep an archive if import is not available. Store exported Teams records separately with appropriate access and retention controls. Element documents exporting existing Element room histories to HTML, plain text, or JSON, including attachments; that is an Element-to-file export, not a way to import Teams history. See Element’s message-export guidance.
Questions to ask a migration provider
Before selecting a custom tool or service, get written answers—and test the claims against your own data—on the details that determine whether a migration is usable:
Best Value
- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
- Which Teams conversation types are supported: direct, group, meeting, and channel conversations?
- Are original senders and timestamps represented accurately, and how are identities mapped to Element accounts?
- Are replies, reactions, edits, and mentions preserved, and how do they appear in Element?
- How are attachments and shared-file links handled? Are files copied, linked, or omitted?
- What happens to private or encrypted content, and what access controls apply after import?
- Can you inspect an audit trail, verify message counts, and retain the original export?
- Can the provider demonstrate a test import using representative data before a full cutover?
Do not treat a feature list as proof of fidelity. Preservation of authorship, timestamps, threads, reactions, attachments, or encryption depends on the specific importer and must be demonstrated for the content you need.
