You can export ChatGPT conversations, but the official documentation reviewed does not describe a native Claude importer that recreates them as individual Claude chats. The practical way to switch is to keep the export as a secure backup and selectively rebuild useful preferences and project context in Claude. ChatGPT’s own export-file workflow is for reference in another personal ChatGPT account—not a full account migration or a ChatGPT-to-Claude transfer.
Can you import ChatGPT history into Claude?
There is no native ChatGPT-history import into Claude described in the reviewed Anthropic documentation. You should not expect an uploaded export to appear as separate, searchable conversations in Claude. You can reuse selected information manually—for example, by preparing a concise context document or adding relevant material to a Claude Project.

OpenAI’s documented transfer option has a different destination: it lets you upload exported conversation data into a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account as reference. OpenAI says this does not merge accounts or move conversations into the destination account’s chat history. See OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions.

How to move useful context to Claude

Check export access for your ChatGPT account
For signed-in personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts, OpenAI lists an export option. Self-service export is unavailable for Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces; ask the workspace owner about access. Edu workspace export may be available if an administrator enables it. Controls can vary by account and workspace, so check the options visible to you. OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT page covers export access.

Request the export and secure the archive
Use the account settings or privacy route shown in your ChatGPT account. Download the archive and keep it somewhere private; OpenAI warns that exported data can contain sensitive account information. Treat the archive as a backup, not as a file that Claude will automatically convert into chat history.

Select what is still useful
Review the conversations and extract only durable context: for example, writing preferences, recurring project constraints, decisions, or source material you still rely on. Keep the original archive intact and work from a separate copy. Avoid moving unrelated or sensitive conversations simply for completeness.

Put enduring project context in Claude
Create a Claude Project for a continuing area of work, then add relevant documents or a concise context file to its knowledge base and set project instructions. This makes that information available within the project, but does not recreate the source chats as native Claude conversations.

Consider connectors when the source is an active tool
If the information you need lives in a supported cloud service or local files, a Claude connector or desktop extension may be more useful than copying old conversation archives. Check the documented permissions and availability for your plan before connecting a service.

Test your new setup
Try a few representative tasks and check that Claude has the facts and instructions you intended to carry over. Keep access to ChatGPT until the replacement workflow is working for you.
What does not transfer in a switch?
A ChatGPT export is not a full account migration. OpenAI’s documented reference workflow does not merge accounts, recreate old chats as separate sidebar items, or transfer subscriptions, settings, memories, custom GPTs, files, or workspace access. The stated workflow is limited to making exported conversations available as reference in a new personal ChatGPT conversation; it does not establish a corresponding Claude import.
Likewise, Anthropic’s ability to export Claude data is for exporting Claude information, not importing ChatGPT history. Individual Claude Free, Pro, and Max users with active accounts can export user information and chat history. Team plan Primary Owners can export user information and chat history; Enterprise Primary Owners can request organization data through Data management. The official documentation cited here does not establish that any third-party ChatGPT-to-Claude migration utility is safe, reliable, or able to recreate chat history. Do not give a tool access to an account or upload an export until you have checked who operates it, what data it receives, how it handles that data, what permissions it requests, and its current terms. A manual, selective transfer avoids granting a migration service access to an entire archive.
