Move an AWS workload to a VPS as a controlled rehost, not as a file copy. Inventory the application and its dependencies, build and secure a matching VPS, create a restorable backup, transfer files and databases with their supported tools, test on the new host, then cut traffic only after a final freeze and synchronization. Keep the AWS environment and recovery artifacts available until the VPS passes an agreed acceptance window.

What an AWS-to-VPS migration actually involves
An EC2 instance is only one part of a production system. A successful move also accounts for databases, attached volumes, object storage, queues, scheduled jobs, certificates, firewall rules, IAM or application credentials, monitoring, backups, DNS, and third-party integrations. A VPS usually gives you a new virtual machine and a public network address; recreating the surrounding services and operating practices is your responsibility unless you choose managed services.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe practical method is a rehost: reproduce the required operating-system and application stack, copy persistent data, point the application at the new services, and change routing. You generally cannot transfer an EC2 instance image directly to an arbitrary VPS provider without conversion and compatibility work. Treat the target as a clean server and migrate the workload deliberately.
Decide the scope and the success criteria first
Write down what is moving and what “done” means before provisioning anything. This prevents a forgotten worker, cron job, or webhook from becoming a production incident.

Workload scope
- Web server, application processes, worker processes, and process supervisors.
- Databases, search indexes, caches, message queues, and attached file storage.
- Object-storage buckets or other remote data, including lifecycle and access policies.
- Cron and systemd timers, certificates, reverse-proxy rules, redirects, and scheduled maintenance.
- DNS records, load-balancer targets, firewall rules, private-network routes, and allowlists.
- Monitoring, alerting, log retention, backup schedules, deployment pipelines, and restore procedures.
- Payment, email, analytics, webhook, API, and identity-provider integrations.
Acceptance criteria
Record the maximum acceptable downtime, permitted data loss, performance target, and the precise condition that triggers rollback. Include functional checks such as login, a write transaction, an upload and download, background-job completion, outbound email, API calls, TLS, and administrative functions. A home page that returns HTTP 200 is not sufficient evidence that the migration worked.
| Decision | What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Downtime | Maximum interruption during the routing change | Determines whether a short maintenance freeze is acceptable or whether a phased approach is needed. |
| Data loss | Recovery-point objective for each data store | Defines how recent the final backup and synchronization must be. |
| Performance | CPU, memory, latency, error-rate, and storage targets compared with AWS | Prevents an under-sized VPS from being accepted because basic pages load. |
| Rollback | Checkpoint, owner, deadline, and routing action | Lets the team reverse the change before stale data creates a second incident. |
Inventory the AWS environment
Use the AWS console, infrastructure-as-code definitions, deployment files, and operating-system inspection to create a migration inventory. AWS migration guidance emphasizes documenting application ownership and existing firewall rules; those details are often missing when a server has grown organically.
Capture compute and network details
- EC2 instance type, operating-system release, kernel, installed packages, mount points, attached volumes, and filesystem usage.
- Private and public addresses, DNS names, security-group rules, network ACL assumptions, exposed ports, and source-IP allowlists.
- Running services, listening sockets, system users, file ownership, permissions, environment files, and deployment paths.
- Elastic IP or other address references embedded in configuration, scripts, partner allowlists, or webhook destinations.
Capture data and dependencies
- Database engines and versions, database names, users, grants, extensions, replication settings, and backup locations.
- Uploads, generated reports, media, certificates, and any data stored outside the database.
- Queues, workers, caches, cron jobs, systemd timers, log rotation, and retention requirements.
- Credentials and secrets, separating the secret value from where it is used. Include IAM roles, access keys, API tokens, SMTP credentials, and webhook signing keys.
- External services that restrict source addresses or require callback URLs.
Mark each item as required for the first production request, needed shortly afterward, or intentionally retired. This list becomes both the build plan and the cutover checklist.
Choose and provision the VPS
Select a region close to users and critical dependencies. Size CPU, RAM, storage IOPS, and network capacity from observed AWS utilization rather than the EC2 instance label alone. Confirm that the provider offers the operating-system release and kernel features your software needs, IPv4 and IPv6 if required, snapshots or backups, a stateful firewall, console recovery, and usable monitoring.
Initial server hardening
- Create the VPS from a minimal supported operating-system image and record its private and public addresses.
- Create a named administrative account and grant it only the required administrative privileges. Keep the provider’s emergency console or recovery method available.
- Install security updates before exposing application ports. On a Debian- or Ubuntu-based host, this commonly starts with
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade; use the equivalent commands for your distribution. - Install an SSH public key for the administrative account. Test a second session before disabling password authentication or root login.
- Configure the host firewall to allow SSH from approved sources and only the web, application, database, or monitoring ports that are genuinely needed. Do not expose a database to the public internet merely because the old security group did.
- Set the hostname, time synchronization, log forwarding, disk alerts, and basic CPU, memory, storage, and network monitoring.
Do not copy an AWS security group verbatim. Translate its intent to the VPS firewall and provider network controls, then verify from both an allowed and a denied source.

Back up before changing the source
Create an application-consistent database backup and a recoverable source snapshot or equivalent backup before the first transfer. A snapshot protects the machine state; it does not automatically prove that a database dump, object-storage copy, or application restore will work.
Make the backup useful
- Record the backup time, contents, encryption or access controls, retention, and exact storage location.
- Perform a restore test in a non-production environment when practical. Check that the database starts, users can authenticate, files are readable, and the application can connect.
- Keep the original AWS instance and its recovery artifacts while the VPS is being tested. Do not delete them after the first successful page load.
- For large or busy databases, plan how the final incremental synchronization will be produced after writes are paused.
DigitalOcean’s migration guidance similarly recommends backing up the old provider, uploading that data to the new instance, and updating configuration details such as database credentials. The principle applies regardless of which VPS provider you select.
Recreate the software stack
Install the same major versions of the runtime, web server, database engine, system packages, workers, and scheduled-job tooling unless you have deliberately approved a version change. A “cleaner” upgrade during a host migration makes failures harder to diagnose.
Match behavior, not just package names
- Recreate service accounts, groups, directory paths, ownership, permissions, umasks, and writable locations.
- Rebuild reverse-proxy routes, upstream sockets, compression, request limits, redirects, and WebSocket or long-polling settings.
- Install the required TLS certificates and configure automated renewal without publishing private keys.
- Reproduce environment variables and secret references through a protected secret store or root-readable configuration, never by pasting secrets into shell history or a public repository.
- Configure locale, time zone, maximum file size, process limits, kernel parameters, and storage mounts that the application expects.
Replace AWS-specific metadata calls, instance-role assumptions, SDK endpoints, and private-address references with VPS-compatible configuration. If the application used an AWS-managed queue, object store, email relay, or database feature, decide whether to retain that service remotely or replace it and test the resulting behavior.
Transfer application files safely
Use a controlled SSH account and an encrypted transfer. rsync is preferable for repeatable synchronization because it transfers only differences and can preserve metadata; scp is adequate for a small, one-time copy.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- On the VPS, create the destination directories and service accounts, then verify available disk space and mount points.
- From a controlled administration host, test key-based SSH access to the VPS and confirm the host key through a trusted channel.
- Run an initial synchronization of application code, uploads, and configuration templates. A typical pattern is
rsync -aHAX --info=progress2 --exclude='cache/' --exclude='tmp/' /path/to/app/ admin@VPS_ADDRESS:/path/to/app/. Adjust paths, exclusions, and preservation flags for your filesystem and provider. - Do not copy transient caches, PID files, sockets, or machine-specific logs. Copy uploads and other durable files explicitly; they are easy to overlook when they live outside the application directory.
- Set ownership and permissions on the VPS, then start the services and inspect their logs before any public cutover.
- Repeat the synchronization after the application is quiesced during the cutover window so files created since the first copy cannot be lost.
For a small file, the equivalent one-off operation is scp /local/file admin@VPS_ADDRESS:/remote/path/. Avoid embedding passwords in commands or scripts. Restrict the transfer account and remove temporary access when the migration is complete.
Migrate databases as a separate operation
File transfer does not move database state. Use the database engine’s supported dump, backup, and restore tools, then recreate users and grants on the VPS.
Export, transfer, and import
- Confirm the source and target engine versions and extensions. Resolve incompatibilities before the production window.
- Create a consistent export using the engine’s documented method. For MySQL-compatible databases, a common logical workflow is
mysqldump --single-transaction --routines --triggers --all-databases > dump.sql; choose options appropriate to your schema, workload, and privilege model. - Encrypt or otherwise protect the export while it is stored and transferred. Copy it over SSH, for example with
scp dump.sql admin@VPS_ADDRESS:/secure/backup/path/. - Create the target database users and grants with least privilege, then import the dump using the target engine’s client. Restart or reload the database service only when the distribution’s procedure requires it.
- Update the application’s database host, port, database name, username, password, TLS settings, and connection-pool limits. Never assume the old private hostname remains valid.
- Run schema checks and pending migrations deliberately. Validate indexes, representative records, character encoding, time zones, stored routines, and application connectivity.
For PostgreSQL, use the matching pg_dump and pg_restore or a documented streaming method; for other engines, follow that engine’s consistency and privilege guidance rather than adapting MySQL flags blindly.
Validate data, not just import completion
- Compare row counts or checksums for critical tables where practical.
- Open representative user accounts, orders, documents, and recent records.
- Exercise reads and writes through the application, including transactions and background consumers.
- Confirm that sequences, auto-increment values, extensions, full-text indexes, and scheduled maintenance jobs are present.
- Record the final export and import times so the cutover’s recovery point is known.
Recreate integrations and operations
Before testing users, make the VPS operationally complete. Configure object-storage endpoints, email delivery, payment or API credentials, webhook URLs and signatures, queues, cron jobs, log rotation, monitoring, alerting, and backup schedules. Update partner allowlists that reference the AWS address. Verify that outbound traffic, reverse DNS requirements, and provider abuse controls will not block mail or API calls.

Test the VPS before changing production DNS
Give the VPS a temporary hostname or use a local hosts-file entry that resolves the production hostname to the new address. This lets you exercise the real virtual host, TLS configuration, cookies, redirects, and application routing without sending ordinary users there.
Pre-cutover test checklist
- Login, logout, password reset, authorization boundaries, and administrator functions.
- Create, edit, and delete representative records; upload and download files; generate reports.
- Run workers, queues, scheduled jobs, retries, and failure handling.
- Send and receive test email, call external APIs, process webhooks, and verify payment or identity callbacks in the appropriate test mode.
- Check HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, certificate names and renewal, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, static assets, WebSockets, and large request limits.
- Compare latency, error rates, CPU, memory, disk, and network use with the AWS baseline.
- Restore the database and critical files in a disposable environment once more if your acceptance policy requires it.
Fix failed checks before scheduling the cutover. Do not use DNS as a substitute for testing; cached resolvers can send some users to either environment during the transition.

Choose an all-at-once or phased cutover
The right pattern depends on whether the application can safely run in two environments and how strictly data must remain consistent.
| Approach | Best fit | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-at-once | Single-host applications that tolerate a maintenance freeze | Straightforward routing, one source of writes, and a clear final synchronization | More risk concentrated in one event; a missed dependency affects the whole service. |
| Phased | Systems that can run compatible versions across two environments | Smaller blast radius and the possibility of moving components or traffic gradually | Requires compatible application behavior, routing, monitoring, and a deliberate strategy for writes and data reconciliation. |
For either method, assign an owner for the database, DNS, application validation, and rollback decision. Announce the maintenance window and freeze nonessential deployments.
Execute the production cutover in order
- Lower DNS TTL ahead of time where appropriate. Do this early enough for existing caches to age out, while recognizing that some resolvers may honor minimum or stale values.
- Freeze or quiesce writes. Put the application in maintenance mode, stop workers that create data, pause ingestion, or otherwise prevent divergent writes.
- Take the final backup. Capture the database and any durable files created since the initial transfer.
- Run the final synchronization. Perform the last file sync and import the final database changes. Confirm counts, timestamps, and service readiness.
- Start and verify target services. Check process status, listening ports, migrations, mounts, certificates, queues, and logs on the VPS.
- Change routing. Update DNS A and AAAA records or load-balancer targets to the VPS addresses. Keep the old environment available rather than shutting it down immediately.
- Run smoke and functional checks. Test from the VPS directly and through the public hostname, including a real read and write if the freeze has been lifted.
- Resume traffic and watch closely. Remove maintenance mode only after the target passes the checks and continue monitoring through the agreed observation period.
This order matches the migration sequence described in AWS guidance: ingestion freeze, final backup, data synchronization, routing changes, and testing.
Best Value
Verify DNS, users, and system health
DNS propagation is not a single global event. Query the hostname from multiple networks and resolvers, and check both A and AAAA records if IPv6 is enabled. Confirm that the certificate presented by the VPS matches the public hostname and that redirects do not send users back to an AWS address.

Set alerts for elevated CPU, memory pressure, disk exhaustion, network errors, and repeated process restarts. Compare these signals with the AWS baseline rather than relying on a single uptime check.
Rollback without creating a split-brain database
Keep the AWS source read-only or stopped but recoverable until the acceptance criteria pass. If the migration fails before the VPS accepts new writes, redirect routing to the AWS source and investigate. If users have written data on the VPS, the old database is stale; simply switching DNS back can lose those transactions.
After new writes, choose a deliberate recovery path: reconcile changes between databases, export the new records and apply them to the source, or restore from the target’s final backup according to your application’s conflict rules. Record who authorizes rollback and the latest safe checkpoint. AWS recommends defining explicit rollback checkpoints and a strategy for data changed after cutover.
Close out the migration
- Keep the AWS instance, snapshots, database exports, and configuration backups until the acceptance window and retention policy allow disposal.
- Confirm that DNS and embedded IP references no longer point at AWS, except for intentionally retained services.
- Remove temporary SSH keys, transfer accounts, test hostnames, maintenance rules, and broad firewall exceptions.
- Document the VPS architecture, service owners, credentials location, backup schedule, restore steps, monitoring dashboards, and rollback procedure.
- Review actual resource usage and resize only after representative production traffic has been observed.
- Decommission the AWS resources in stages, checking billing, logs, snapshots, object storage, reserved addresses, and third-party allowlists so an overlooked dependency does not disappear.
A migration is complete when the VPS can be operated, monitored, backed up, restored, and rolled back by the team—not merely when DNS resolves to its address.
