Start by identifying what failed: missing buttons or feeds usually point to placement, caching, browser extensions, or CSS; an editor that cannot load or save points to REST, AJAX, nonce, or server errors; failed Facebook or Instagram publishing usually involves account permissions, expired authorization, app mode, or outbound HTTPS; and a failure immediately after an update commonly indicates a plugin, theme, or version conflict. Test the symptom in a private browser window, then work through the layers below without changing the live site blindly.

Classify the failure before changing anything
Write down the exact page, template, network, browser, and error message involved. Test both the public site and the WordPress editor in a private window. A private-window test separates a site-wide failure from a cached page, stale cookie, blocked script, or browser extension problem.

Record a reproducible case
Capture the URL, affected account or network, user role, browser, time, and exact error. Note whether every visitor sees the problem or only one logged-in user. A short screen recording can show whether the failure occurs while rendering, saving, authenticating, or publishing.

Verify that the plugin actually outputs something
Open the plugin’s settings and the content location where its output should appear. Check the relevant block, widget, shortcode, template hook, or floating-button setting. A plugin can be active while its block has been removed, a widget is disabled, a shortcode is mistyped, or a template no longer calls the required hook. Check a page source or browser inspector only after confirming the setting, because an absent element means a placement problem rather than a styling problem.

Purge every cache layer
Clear the WordPress page or object cache, any server cache, and the CDN cache that serves the affected URL. Then perform a hard refresh. Cached HTML can preserve an old shortcode result, while cached JavaScript can keep an obsolete integration script. Purge only after recording the original symptom so you can tell whether the change helped.

Remove browser interference temporarily
Disable ad blockers, tracking protection, privacy extensions, and script blockers for one test, or use a second browser profile. If the feature works in a private window or another browser, the site may be healthy and the original browser’s extension, cookie, or cached script is responsible. Re-enable extensions individually to identify the one blocking the request; do not leave protective extensions disabled permanently.

Reproduce the issue on staging
Create a current staging copy before deactivating anything. WordPress.com Support describes a conflict as two plugins, or a plugin and a theme, that work separately but fail together. On staging, deactivate all plugins except the social plugin, test with a default WordPress theme, and then reactivate plugins one at a time. Repeat the test after each activation and record the first combination that fails. This one-by-one method protects production and identifies a responsible component instead of guessing.

Inspect REST, AJAX, and loopback traffic
Open your browser’s Developer Tools, select the Network panel, reproduce the failure, and inspect requests made when the integration loads or saves. Look for HTTP 401 (unauthorized), 403 (forbidden), 404 (missing route), 429 (rate limited), or 500 (server error) responses. In WordPress, open Tools > Site Health and review REST API and loopback warnings. A loopback request is a request from the site back to itself; cron, editor operations, and some integrations depend on it.
Do not disable the REST API as a workaround. WordPress Developer Resources warns that disabling it breaks WordPress administration that depends on the API. Repair the failing route, authentication, firewall rule, or plugin instead. Logged-in REST and manual AJAX requests may require the user’s cookies and a valid

Check activation and server prerequisites
If activation itself fails, verify that the uploaded ZIP is intact and that the plugin has a valid WordPress header. WordPress identifies invalid headers, stale plugin caches, and file-permission errors as common activation causes. Ask the host to confirm that PHP cURL is enabled and that the server can make outbound HTTPS requests. Social counts, feeds, and publishing APIs often depend on those requests; a browser connection from your computer cannot compensate for a server that cannot reach the platform.

Reconnect the social account
For Facebook or Instagram, connect the intended page, profile, or business account rather than an account that merely has personal access. Review the integration’s permissions in the relevant business settings, then reconnect after removing an expired authorization. Check whether the connected application is in development mode; that mode can restrict who is allowed to use it. Never paste access tokens, app secrets, or complete authorization URLs into a public support ticket.

When buttons or feeds are not visible
Confirm the rendering location
Determine whether the plugin renders through a block, widget, shortcode, theme template, or floating control. Inspect the exact page type that fails: a post template may differ from a custom landing-page template, and a widget area may be disabled on one layout. If the plugin offers separate desktop and mobile visibility settings, verify both. A feed can also be limited to a selected account, category, or page, producing an empty result without a technical error.
Separate missing markup from hidden markup
Use the browser inspector to search for the plugin’s wrapper element. If no wrapper exists in the HTML, WordPress did not render the output; return to placement, conditional-display, shortcode, or server-request checks. If the wrapper exists but is invisible, inspect computed CSS for display:none, visibility:hidden, zero height, an off-screen position, a low z-index, or a parent with overflow:hidden. Theme rules can hide icons or make a feed container collapse. Correct the narrow selector in a child theme or custom CSS rather than editing plugin files, which would be overwritten by updates.

Check consent and script policies
Privacy or consent tools may delay third-party scripts until a visitor opts in. Test with the required consent category enabled and inspect the console for blocked-resource messages. A security header or content-security policy can also reject an external script; the Network panel identifies the blocked domain and response rather than leaving you to guess.
When the editor cannot load or save the integration
Read the failing request
Open Developer Tools before clicking Save or Connect. Filter Network requests by fetch, XHR, or the plugin’s endpoint, then note the status code and response body. A 401 or 403 calls for authentication, capability, nonce, or firewall investigation; a 404 suggests a missing or rewritten route; a 429 indicates rate limiting; and a 500 requires server or PHP-log review. Check the browser Console for JavaScript exceptions that prevent the save handler from running.

Verify cookies, nonce, and user capability
Test while logged in as an administrator who should have permission to configure the plugin. Clear only the affected site’s cookies and sign in again. If the request includes a wp_rest nonce, reload the settings screen to obtain a fresh value. A stale page left open overnight can submit an expired nonce. Do not solve a nonce failure by granting every user administrator privileges; correct the session or capability check.
Check loopback and security controls
Site Health can reveal loopback failures caused by basic-authentication gates, maintenance mode, DNS resolution, TLS certificates, or a firewall that blocks the site’s own IP address. Ask the host to review web-server and PHP logs at the exact failure time. If a security plugin or managed firewall blocks the endpoint, allow the specific authenticated route after confirming its purpose; avoid broad, permanent allowlists.

Use the correct account and page
Reconnect from the plugin’s account screen and select the exact page, business account, or profile that should receive posts. An account can authenticate successfully yet lack permission to publish to the selected destination. Remove obsolete connections first so the plugin does not silently reuse an expired token.
Review business permissions and application mode
Open the platform’s business-integration settings and inspect which permissions were granted. Missing page-management, content-publishing, or profile-access permissions can stop a post after the connection appears complete. If the application is in development mode, only approved roles may be able to use it; switching modes is an application-owner decision, not a WordPress setting.
Distinguish account errors from server errors
A platform permission message points to reconnecting or correcting the account. A timeout, cURL error, DNS failure, or 500 response points to the WordPress server’s outbound connection. Ask the host to test PHP cURL and outbound HTTPS to the platform, and check whether a firewall, DNS filter, or TLS inspection device is interrupting the request. Save the platform’s request ID if one is supplied, but redact tokens and secrets.
Recover from an update-related break
Record the versions of WordPress, PHP, the active theme, the social plugin, and any plugin that touches caching, security, or the editor. On staging, reproduce the failure with the same versions. If the default theme and only the social plugin work, reactivate other plugins singly until the break returns. If the failure occurs with the default theme and all other plugins disabled, contact the plugin author with the exact error, request status, versions, and a staging reproduction.

If the update caused an urgent production outage, restore the last known-good files and database from a tested backup or use the host’s rollback facility, then keep the staging copy for compatibility testing. A rollback is temporary: identify whether the updated plugin changed an API, removed a hook, altered required PHP behavior, or depends on a newer WordPress version before applying it again.
How to decide whether to replace the plugin
Replacement is justified when staging demonstrates a reproducible incompatibility, the vendor has not updated a required social API, or support confirms that the integration has been retired. Before switching, export settings where supported, document every connected account and destination, and schedule a rollback window. Keep the old plugin disabled rather than deleted until the new implementation has passed front-end, editor, publishing, and cache tests.

Prevent the next failure
- Maintain a staging site that mirrors production and test updates there first.
- Keep current backups of files and the database, and verify that restoration works.
- Record plugin, theme, WordPress, PHP, and social-platform versions after each successful change.
- Monitor Site Health for REST and loopback warnings instead of waiting for an editor failure.
- Document which account owns each connection and which permissions it requires.
- Retest a representative front-end page, the editor’s save action, and one publishing workflow after updates.
- Keep browser privacy protections enabled, but know how to perform a controlled private-window comparison.
- Never store access tokens or app secrets in screenshots, tickets, documentation, or source control.
