To migrate a 24/7 YouTube stream to a new VPS, inventory the working encoder and its configuration, prepare the replacement server, transfer media and settings, verify the YouTube destination URL and stream key, then validate the incoming stream before retiring the old host. Keep a rollback route until the replacement has proved healthy. A process running on the new VPS does not, by itself, prove YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast.
How do I move my YouTube live stream from one server to another without losing it?
Treat the move as a migration of both the streaming process and everything it depends on: media paths, playlists, permissions, credentials, service definitions, network rules and monitoring. The steps below apply whether the current encoder is FFmpeg, OBS or another setup; commands and cutover details depend on the existing installation.

Before provisioning or stopping anything, write down the known-good setup. Keep the stream key itself private; document where it is stored rather than copying the secret into notes, screenshots or a public ticket.
- Encoder software and exact executable/version, or the OBS profile if applicable.
- Inputs: local video and audio, playlists, camera or relay URLs, mounted storage and any scripts.
- Output URL and protocol, plus the protected location of the stream key.
- Service account, working directory, environment files, service unit, restart policy and boot-enable state.
- Log locations, monitoring, watchdog scripts, cron timers, periodic restart jobs and alerts.
- Host and provider firewall rules, DNS names and network allowlists.
- Known-good resolution, frame rate, codecs, bitrate, audio settings and custom encoder flags.

2. Prepare the replacement VPS
Where practical, use the same operating-system family and install the required encoder dependencies. Create the service account and destination directories, verify disk space for media and logs, and ensure outbound connectivity to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint is allowed. Sizing depends on the encoder settings and whether the VPS encodes video or merely relays it; generic CPU, memory or bitrate examples are not guaranteed requirements for your workload.
3. Transfer media and configuration
Use a secure transfer method for media, playlists, scripts and service configuration. After copying, review every absolute path and file permission, then compare the new configuration with the inventory. Keep the old host intact while you test. Protect the key throughout the transfer; if it was exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the protected configuration on the new host.

Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the stream or broadcast that the encoder should feed. Copy the current stream URL and key from its stream settings rather than assuming values on the old VPS remain current. YouTube says: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” If you use RTMPS, select the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room; do not assume the ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not commit a real key to source control or expose it in logs. An operations example advises regenerating a key if it has been exposed: FFmpeg and systemd example.

5. Recreate process supervision
If the existing encoder runs under systemd, adapt the unit for the new paths, account, environment and encoder command. Reload systemd, enable the service at boot if that matches your intended operation, start it, and inspect its status and logs. A cited example uses Restart=always, separate service names and journal logs; those are implementation choices to review, not requirements for every stream.
For OBS, preserve and verify the profile and stream settings on the replacement machine. Do not assume an FFmpeg service can replace an OBS setup without rebuilding its scenes and input configuration. 6. Validate, then cut over
- Check the new encoder’s local service status and logs for errors.
- Confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the intended stream.
- Inspect the live output for video, audio, the expected media rotation and stability.
- If your migration plan permits, test a service restart and a VPS reboot while you still have a rollback route.
- Retire the old VPS only after the replacement is confirmed healthy.
Whether you can test both hosts in parallel without affecting the existing broadcast, or need a new YouTube event or key, depends on the current broadcast setup. Check Live Control Room before attempting parallel publishing or switching the encoder; the available guidance does not establish a universal no-interruption cutover method.
Do I need a new YouTube stream key when I change VPS?
A VPS move alone does not establish that a new key is required. Verify the active stream settings in Live Control Room and use the current URL and key shown there. If the key has been exposed, replace it and update the new host’s protected configuration. Never publish the key or put it in a public repository.

How can I keep my YouTube stream running after a VPS reboot?
Configure the encoder to start through the host’s process supervisor or equivalent boot mechanism, then test both a process restart and a reboot before removing the old server. In a systemd setup, check that the intended unit is enabled at boot and that its paths, account and environment still work after restart. Review logs after the test.
Automatic local restart is useful, but it is not proof of a working broadcast: confirm both encoder output and YouTube’s Live Control Room ingest status. See the configuration example for one systemd-based approach: FFmpeg and systemd example.
What should I check if the new VPS does not stream?
- Connection timeout or SSL error: Compare the scheme and host with the URL in Live Control Room. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL. YouTube also documents port 443 as a troubleshooting option when the encoder setup requires it. YouTube Help: stream using RTMPS
- The service is active, but no stream appears: Check the encoder command, key, selected event, service logs and YouTube ingest status. A supervisor reports on the local process, not whether YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast.
- The old host connects but the new one does not: Review both host-level and provider-level firewall rules and test outbound connectivity. OBS identifies firewall or security software as a possible source of connection problems. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
- Media is missing, or audio and video are out of sync: Check copied paths, playlist entries, permissions, and whether input looping and timing options were preserved.
- The key may have leaked: Replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the protected configuration. Keep the replacement out of source control and logs.
FFmpeg or OBS: what should I carry over?
Choose the migration approach that matches the working encoder. A headless FFmpeg process and a graphical OBS setup are different operating patterns; neither is established as universally better. Compare them against your current architecture and operational needs.

How should I choose the replacement VPS?
Compare providers based on the destination region, sustained network capacity, storage and backup options, operating-system access, support and total cost for continuous outbound traffic. Match resources to your actual encoding settings and workload: a server encoding video has different demands from one relaying a prepared stream.
