There is no universal conversion from body measurements to an XS, medium, or numeric size: charts differ, and some describe your body while others describe the finished garment.
What you need before measuring
Use a flexible, soft measuring tape over the undergarments or light clothing you expect to wear beneath your scrubs. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug; do not pull it tight. A second person can help keep the tape horizontal, especially around your back and hips.

Write each measurement down with its unit. If you need a particular hem length, measure while wearing the footwear you expect to use at work and follow the garment brand’s inseam instructions.

How to take each measurement
Chest or bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest or bust, keeping it level. Boston University’s scrub size guide places the tape under the armpits and across the shoulder blades as well as over the fullest part. Its guide identifies bust or chest as the primary measurement for choosing a scrub top.

Waist
Measure around your natural waistline. Keep the tape level and slightly loose, as Boston University advises. Since charts may define the waist placement differently, follow the instructions on the chart for the specific garment rather than assuming every brand uses the same point.
Hips
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. This is particularly useful when checking scrub pants; Boston University also advises people with a pear shape to take hip measurements into account when choosing a top.

Inseam
Measure along the inside of one leg, from just below the crotch toward the hem length you want. The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) GME Scrub Guide describes measuring to about one inch below the ankle, but a brand may define its inseam target differently. Follow that brand’s directions, and do not use your height as a substitute when the chart asks for inseam.

How to use a scrub size chart
- Find the chart for the exact brand and style. Use the chart attached to the garment you are considering, not a general conversion chart. The University of Minnesota Bookstores, for example, publishes separate men’s and women’s scrub charts with their own ranges.
- Check what the measurements describe. A body-measurement chart gives the body dimensions intended for a size. A finished-garment chart gives dimensions of the item itself. Careletics explicitly labels its chart as body measurements rather than garment measurements. Do not compare a garment’s circumference directly with your body circumference without accounting for the brand’s fit instructions and ease.
- Match the relevant measurements to the item. For a top, start with chest or bust and consult any additional fit guidance; for pants, compare waist and hip measurements with the pants chart. Use the inseam or length option separately.
- Choose top and pant sizes independently when possible. Your best-fitting top size may not be your best-fitting pant size. If the brand sells separates or publishes separate charts, use those options rather than forcing both pieces into one size.
- Use brand-specific advice when between sizes. There is no reliable universal rule for sizing up or down. Check the particular chart and the garment’s fit guidance.
Choose length and fit separately from waist and hip size
Inseam options are often separate from waist and hip sizing. OHSU’s 2022 guide lists regular inseams of 31–32 inches, short 29–30 inches, tall 34–35 inches, and ultra-tall 36 inches (unhemmed). Those are options in that guide, not a universal scrub standard.

When the brand provides them, also compare garment length, rise, fit label (for example, relaxed or modern), fabric stretch, and waistband adjustability. Careletics, for instance, provides separate top and bottom details and an unstretched waistband measurement for its pants. Follow the chart’s own definitions when comparing those garment details.
