For a better chance of choosing the right size online, measure the body points requested by the specific item’s size chart, then compare those numbers with that chart—not with a size label you usually buy. A flexible cloth measuring tape is useful; if you do not have one, Wrangler says string and a ruler can work as a substitute. Keep the tape level for horizontal measurements and comfortably firm, not pulled tight.
What you need before measuring
- A flexible cloth measuring tape. If one is unavailable, Wrangler suggests using string and measuring it against a ruler.
- The size chart and measurement instructions for the exact brand and product. Levi’s and Wrangler publish their own measurement guidance, and the requested points can vary by garment.
- A note or phone to record your measurements in a consistent unit so you can compare them with charts later.
There is no universal rule for what to wear while measuring: Wrangler recommends measuring without clothing for best fit, while Carhartt recommends measuring over undergarments. Follow the instructions for the chart you are using. Wrangler’s size-chart guide and Carhartt’s fit guide show why one method should not be assumed for every brand.

How to take common body measurements
Stand naturally and keep the tape comfortably firm. For measurements that go around your body, keep the tape level rather than letting it slope up or down. The exact point to measure depends on the garment and the chart, so use the brand’s directions if they differ from these general descriptions.

Measure where the chart specifies. Levi’s directs shoppers to measure the widest part of the chest and keep the tape horizontal. Wrangler’s men’s guide describes wrapping the tape around the upper body under the arms and across the shoulder blades; its women’s guide uses the fullest part of the bust. Waist
Check where the garment is designed to sit before measuring. Levi’s guide uses the smallest part of the waist and says the tape should not be too snug or too loose. Carhartt describes finding the natural bend by bending side to side, and notes that this point may not be the smallest part of the waist. Use the specific item’s chart rather than assuming these locations are interchangeable: Levi’s size guide and Carhartt’s fit guide.
Hips or seat
Measure the fullest area specified by the chart and keep the tape level. Levi’s directs shoppers to take its seat measurement around the fullest part of the hips. Its guide advises keeping the tape as horizontal as possible: Levi’s size guide.

Inseam
For a body measurement, Levi’s describes measuring down the inside of the leg from the crotch to the ankle. For a practical length comparison, UNIQLO Singapore says to measure an existing pair of trousers from the crotch seam to the cuff. Choose the method that matches the chart’s definition: Levi’s size guide and UNIQLO Singapore’s product measurement guidance.
Neck and sleeve
Some shirt and jacket charts request measurements beyond chest, waist, and hips. For Wrangler’s sleeve measurement, the tape starts at the center back of the neck, runs over the outside of a relaxed, slightly bent arm, and ends at the wrist. Follow the chart’s diagram or wording if it defines another starting point: Wrangler’s size charts.

Use the chart that matches the item
First identify whether the chart describes your body or the finished garment. These are different kinds of numbers and should not be compared as if they were the same measurement.

UNIQLO Singapore explains that its product measurements describe the actual garment laid flat and recommends comparing them with clothes you already own. Flat-lay dimensions are garment measurements, not body circumferences; check how the retailer measures each dimension before making a comparison. UNIQLO Singapore’s product measurement guidance includes dimensions such as body width, garment length, inseam, and rise.

Choose for the intended fit, not just the label
An S, M, L, numeric size, or waist label is not a dependable universal conversion between brands. Compare your measurements with the chart for the exact product, and check the fit description. Stretch may affect how a garment feels, but the sources cited here do not establish a numerical adjustment to apply to measurements. Do not add or subtract a fixed amount unless that product’s own guidance tells you to.
